Player skill level/class knowledge decline

The big issue is that its been years if your the type of player who can’t handle being chewed out for not knowing certain things then you’ve already quit the game and will probably never return. If your the type who doesn’t care and won’t change because some arrogant elitist gets angry then your never going to change at this point. The game has definitely gotten more toxic with HoT and player driven education does more harm than good with the current state of things.

THIS! ^^

Agree with Eurhetemec…

You start to lose me when you separate yourself into a different cast “… I’m a veteran player…”

No one cares if you’re a new player or a veteran. ANet’s job is to make everyone’s gaming experience enjoyable. A lot of “normal players” were extremely unhappy with the way they’d go into a dungeon and all people [like you] wanted to do was skip literally everything and rush to bosses in record times. Not everyone wants to do that. The majority of people don’t want to do that. This is not Diablo III.

God forbid they died, or something. Expletives raining from the heavens. People rage quitting the group, etc. It was, and generally still is, awful. A lot of the decent people who were willing to put in the extra work quit because people like you made it impossible to play the game and enjoy themselves while learning what they needed to learn to “get better.” You expect people to watch YouTube Videos and read Wikis and then be near-flawless speed runners in dungeons. Maybe your expectations on “player skill” are completely out of line with what you really should be expecting from other players?

Additionally, how are they supposed to learn how to play the game better, if you’re skipping 3/4th of the dungeon content?

Lastly, I don’t agree that people should have to study up on a game to learn how to play it well. You’re free to put in extra hours watching YouTube Videos and Reading Wikis, but those days are over [for me, and many others]. There are other B2P games like ESO, where these people can actually have fun, while progressing, and actually get stuff done – without constant abuse from a vocal elitist population. Those games also have mechanics which are more suitable for them and their level of play, as well (i.e. no “Dodge or Die”).

I learn as I discover things while playing the game, while noticing other people of the same class doing things differently (in which case I’ll ask them), of when politely being helped by other players in the game.

At the end of the day, it’s a game. I’m not playing to be a “Pro Vet”; I’m playing to have fun. I have better things to worry about than the average skill level of other players. That’s what other games are for. To give myself variety and less reason to B. and Moan about any of the others I play.

Will the next Xpack go beyond DX9?

1 – Will it go beyond DX9?
2 – Would it survive by remaining DX9?
3 – Windows 10 coming out in 2 day is Direct 12 encluded.
4 – How high should the next X Pack go without looking kitten?

1 – That is up to Anet to decide. If they find that spending resources there will benefit them more than take away, they are more likely to do it. Otherwise, the game still looks brilliant graphical wise, and so an update to DirectX may not be necessary.

2 – Yes.

3 – Included in Windows 10? Or for GW2? If the latter, no.

4 – I don’t know about you, but the upcoming maps look pretty dang impressive and beautiful, without any upgrade to higher DirectX. I’ve played a couple of other MMO’s that don’t look nearly as sharp as GW2, even with higher DirectX enabled.

No one cares about looks. It’s about performance. Going from DX9 to DX11 in WoW boosted the performance of that game. If ANet’s developers are competent enough, then performance should increase if they properly upgrade their engine/client to DX11 (I think DX12 is expecting too much, and generally few people have GPUs that support it).

However, I don’t think this will happen as it’s likely to break the OS X client.

Tren I can understand that there are people in the “community” that are not helpful. As an evil elitist in the eyes of so many pugs I have had my fair share of abuse. Although.. I sort of enjoy it. If you are in need of a build for doing dungeons, I can help you out for that, even if you are playing the one class that is actually awful (necro) there is still a build for it that can make you a decent DPS contributer.

Thanks for reaching out, but I no longer have the game installed. It’s served it’s purpose. I just view it as a traditional RPG like Dragon’s Age. I played through the story, so I’ve gotten my money’s worth.

I’m not dumping time into something I don’t find enjoyable to play.

I don’t think anyone should be asking me what 1 shot skills exist in this game, because there are many.

There are also multiple boss encounters where they put down multiple hostile pads on top of each other, and you can get knocked down and die instantly from them. I’m not the only person this has happened to. I’ve seen it happen on several occasions to other players. I’ve seen as many kitten -7 pads getting layered on top of each other, which would be considered a bug and fixed/balanced out in any other decent MMORPG game.

This happens in both story and explorable missions.

As far as me being back to WoW, yes, I did resub after getting to 80 in this game.

As far as me being still here, well I guess I paid the price of admission the same as you did, didn’t I?

Also, while I do think experience and “skill” are factors in the game play, I think you people go out of your ways to excuse bad design as a L2P issue. After dealing with a few issues I’ve done quite a bit of searching around and a lot of people tend to agree that the PvE in this game is – frankly – terrible and at best an Afterthought.

I think it’s only fair that people who may be looking for a game to play get both sides of the story, and it’s quite hilarious that you people seem so intent on stifling dissent or drowning out people’s complaints with “you just had a bad pug” or “L2P” and things of that nature.

People just thinking about buying this game deserve to hear the first hand experiences of people who have done what they are thinking of doing (diving right in).

As far as playerbase and player attitude is concerned, this game seems to have matured at a rate 10x that or WoW and EverQuest. It’s already borderline intolerable (not just on the forums, in game as well).

I asked a question to someone about builds and basically was told to reroll. I asked in map chat and people just ended up arguing about it. It was disgusting. People on those other game forums are way more receptive and a lot nicer about things. You can read those forums if you want to see, they aren’t behind a paywall.

Buh Bye!

Which is why I’m going back to WoW. For decent gameplay and balanced PvE content.

I’ll never play another MMO without defined Tank and Healer Role, and the PvE in this game is Exhibit A for why most games haven’t ditched that system, and why I will stick with them.

What’s exactly a “balanced pve content”? Mobs will not come to forums and complain that a certain build is OP and needs a nerf. Unless I’m mistaken.

WoW and EverQuest II have balanced PvE content. Go play them and see. It’s not something the average MMORPG player should be uninformed of, and it’s certainly not something the developers should fail so hard at. Challenged Mode dungeons in WoW were not faceroll, and EQ2 had Heroic Instances that were certainly not faceroll, but at least there was proper guidance as to what was needed to be able to complete them decently, and certain whole classes weren’t excluded from them.

I’m aware some people here like the PvP-type combat system in PvE an the lack of dedicated Tank/Heal classes because they don’t like being beholden to them.

But ArenaNet seems to have developed content with them in mind, and then forgot to put them in the game. That’s what the dungeons feel like.

The gameplay is also too twitchy and spastic. Everything feels like a rush. There is no time to breath. It’s just not fun or enjoyable.

The MOBs are either overpowered or have ridiculous amounts of HP. Many of them have skills that one shot you regardless of your class or gear level. Downed state is boring. Helping people up only to have a MOB stack damage pads on top of you and roll away but get downed yourself because you’re at the edge of them (but still in them) and they do insane damage.

And players aren’t really of the mindset that allows a newer player to actually learn how to play the game, either. Frankly, you can put up a party room saying your’re new and want to run a dungeon, and get literally no people for over an hour until you just log off and go play something else.

Everyone either wants a speed run, or to get carried in a speed run. Players are obsessed with skipped content. Did a run with some people and they wiped like 5 times in a row and were obsessed with “we should be able to run past them” even though we could have just slaughtered them in a few minutes and saved a ton of time.

Two Problems I Have on the Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I disagree with your definitions of Horizontal and Vertical Progression.

After all, vertical progression can be specific and limited in scope (Agony Resistance has no place outside of Fractals), while horizontal progression can have arbritrary goalposts as well (Achievement Points being available practically everywhere, and them being the gate for Zenith skins).

A better summary of HP and VP is:

  • VP is power gains (stats) – You have a Sword of Infinity and you complete content to get a Sword of Infinity + 1, that’s vertical progression.
  • HP is option gains (skills, skins, titles etc) – You need a skill that Cripples, you complete content and unlock a skill such as that. Providing it’s not statistically more powerful, it’s horiontal progression.

Not only that, leveling isn’t strictly vertical progression; it’s a progression mechanic that contains both vertical and horizontal progression:

  • Vertical Progression – Stat increases through leveling and Trait line bonuses.
  • Horizontal Progression – Traits (at level 60, the second tier opens up giving the player more options) and Builds (at certain levels players get access to weapon, utility and elite skills, weapon swap, etc) – in other words, options and tools.

Overall, the Mastery system is an example of Horizontal Progression; you gain Mastery Points and the player then has options and tools opened up to them based on how many mastery tracks that player has and how far they’ve progressed along the track. Just because the tracks require progressively more Mastery points and XP, it doesn’t make it vertical progression.

Where the Mastery system may contain Vertical Progression is the individual Mastery tracks themselves.

For example, they mentioned bark stripping in the PoI:

  • If that ‘bark stripping’ is a passive stat (i.e. x% bark penetration) that grows the more you progress it, it’s VP.
  • If it’s a skill you unlock, it’s HP. It’s a tool that doesn’t necessarily make you more powerful stat-wise, but it’s a tool to use against certain creatures.
  • If it’s a skill you unlock that gets more powerful the further you progress the track, in which case it’s an example of both.

One final note – since we’re cherry picking quotes, this quote:

Masteries will give you the tools you need to excel in these fights. Hunt new enemies, master abilities to defeat champions, and become more deadly against the new creatures waiting in the jungle. (emphasis added)

could also easily be read as:

Masteries will give you the tools you need to excel in these fights. Hunt new enemies, master abilities to defeat champions, and become more deadly against the new creatures waiting in the jungle. (emphasis added)

suggesting that while you can complete these fights, unlocking these tools will make the fights easier.

It doesn’t matter if it’s called Yin and Yang Progression, or X and Z Progression, or Night and Day Progression, or Girl and Boy Progression. It doesn’t really change anything about what he said and what his concerns are.

Don’t get bogged down in semantics. His point is fairly clear even if you don’t agree with the terminology he coined to the two different things he’s referring to.

Issues are issues no matter what moniker you give them.

Personally I’m not buying the XPac unless they rescale the dungeon. It’s just, not fun to play in them. It actually feels like DAoC, where if you got hit while casting you were automatically interrupted and practically anything could 1-3 shot you, etc. The combat in this game feels a bit lazily done and the dungeon content is badly tuned on top of that.

I ran some dungeons with some other newer players last night (just doing the story dungeons over again cause nothing else to do) and about all 95% of them do was complain about the terrible dungeon tuning and how useless they felt in them, as well as how unfriendly so many encounters are to melee, among other things.

This “dodge or die” combat needs a bit of thought put into it. You can’t even enjoy the content because it’s too freaking twitchy to play your character in this game.

It’s like all the non-open world PvE content was designed for PvP Tournament players.

Needless to say, I’m basically forced to re-subscribe to WoW, just to continue experiencing some decent PvE content.

Oh well, maybe Elder’s Scroll will be better form that standpoint.

Also the Mastery system replaces skill points when you hit lv80, meaning experience after lv80 awards mastery experience. It would seem unfair for non-HoT players to also lose the acquisition of skill points, as for them that would leave no purpose for post-80 experience.

Their purpose post-80 should be to buy the expansion. And it looks like Anet also thinks that way.

Wait, you’re going to severely kitten their means of level-80 character progression (acquiring skill points, to buy traits, skills they didn’t get while leveling up) and a major reason to run dungeons (they aren’t running them for gear, the drops are the worst I’ve seen in any MMORPG to date – “raid” the TP instead) for those players simply to make them buy the expansion?

I’m sorry, do you actually believe what you’re saying, or are you just maintain the status quo elitist attitude that seems to infest these forums?
