Awesome event, terrible rewards

I found a couple of upgrades for me that should last a bit while leveling, found an exotic, made a whole bunch of coin (at least to my level 45 it is) from just selling what I found and had a good time doing it. I just can’t seem to see the same problems with this event being given out sub par rewards. I feel confident in saying I am not exactly ignorant about getting rewards in MMO’s but I might be missing some key point.

The Mad King Rewards, REALLY Disappointing.

I think the possible rewards and the rewards I received are far from disappointing. I got a 10 slot bag and a medium armor exotic along with a slew of other Halloween materials and general loot. Then there is the possible loot others have gotten, like the Halloween skin exotics which are extremely hard to make yourself like they were some kind of mini legendary.

EDIT: Unless you are looking for some sort of vanity item that only shows you fought the Mad King but I personally wouldn’t be bothered about something like that.

Act 3 Event Timing

I think this could have been handled better by having everyone who has not witnessed the event simply be in the version of LA that exists just before the event. Then they enter an instance which is the event and when they exit the instance they are simply placed in the ‘current’ LA.

Which depending on how they treat portals and keep track of players may very well be easy.

EDIT: I’d like to add I don’t think its fair to claim ArenaNet somehow likes its North American players more then the players in other parts of the world. That is just unreasonable.

i hope u’ll conside and think more for next events since this one is just a trash for my point of view. and dont care others opinions even they agree me..

By all means if you dislike the event you can express why but I find this bit pretty much invalidates your opinion. You expect ArenaNet to listen to your opinion and care about it while you yourself care about no ones opinion but your own(even if they agree with you).

Anyone know if it's possible to craft The Crossing staff skin?

Thank you for the link! I have been wondering how to go about it.
(It seems very daunting to craft one of these though, grindtastic)

I completely understand why people who spent a considerable amount of money would be upset. I am not saying that they are ‘whining’ for nothing and I would hope no one would accuse me of being some sort of white knight. I do want to add a few small points, some of which have been elaborated on on great length or touched upon (I did not read all these posts obviously so maybe this is entirely a rerun like Fresh Prince).

The summary of my brief notes bellow…….Expectations be all kittened up.

1- ArenaNet needs to give a response to these players concerns and frustrations. They need to come up with a suitable way to address these players but no matter what response they conceive some players will still be disgruntled. I have no reason to believe that no one cares despite what some angry players think, their jobs depend on a steady flow of players (and money).

2- As others have mentioned this is a gamble, playing the lottery, flirting with lady luck, some double entendre I am having trouble thinking of. AS SUCH there is a chance to get absolutely nothing from opening numerous chests. I would agree the ‘drop rate’ is quite low though. It is still a gamble and additional keys only buy attempts however and at no point should any reasonable person think that because they bought more then the other guy is it a guaranteed result. No more then playing the lottery every day of your life and never winning more then a free ticket.

3- Obviously ArenaNet was entirely planning for people to buy keys for this event however maybe they didn’t anticipate so many players would buy so many keys(with real money). I am sure they fully expected some players to put down a fair amount of money to buy these keys, and some would get nothing but perhaps the amount of people who spent all this money is much higher then anticipated.

Edit: Just a small edit to add some advice I am sure is going to get scoffed at(or perhaps my lampshading that will prevent the scoffing? scofferoonery? scoffportunity?) simply don’t bet it all on your first hand. In this case test the waters a bit first, if you expected to get lets say 1 skin in 10 boxes (the number is unimportant it could be 1 skin in 2 or 1 in a Googolplexian) then if that seems reasonable buy an appropriate amount of keys. If you don’t get 1 in the 10 boxes you thought it would take simply don’t buy more, as opposed to putting down the money for a equivalent of 100 keys (once again figure is unimportant for this example).

I like this idea quite a bit, it would really save some guess work. Although I am not certain I’d be willing to guess this shouldn’t be too hard to implement when they have some time. I am assuming though it would be an extra icon, a flag and maybe pagination but it could very well be something more complex requiring many hours of work, energy drinks and the film megaforce.

Damage Meter

I don’t feel this would add much for anyone looking to establish player skill.
I’ll give some reasons here:

(Note I will use World of Warcraft as an example since its well known and I am familiar with high end raiding and yes I expect someone to roll their eyes at another mention of WoW but whatever)

-I have seen very few fights in this game where I can call them a ‘tank and spank’. If there was a bunch of bosses I have seen that some tank grabs then you spend your time wailing on a damage meter would be more useful.
-There is no equivalent to an enrage timer as far as I am aware

For example if there were a bunch of fights like Brutallus from Sunwell I could see this being much more useful where you have to deal as much damage as possible in a ludicrously short amount of time before the boss is pretty much scripted to annihilate everything. Instead a players skill in pve is more equal parts of damage and or utility and staying alive. Something more akin (another WoW example sorry everyone) to Illidari Council where its more of a balance and a focus on mobility.

You could certainly still judge a player’s skill based on a damage meter but this would be a relatively poor judge. I think part of this is that roles are much more loosely defined, a thief using double daggers you could make an argument should be judged by a meter but this depends entirely on the build someone is using for a class. you’d have to know what their weapons and chosen skills are. You could make a relatively safe assumption that a warrior using an axe and shield is mostly about damage with just the shield for some extra survivability. However for all you know they might have a bunch of tank utility skills and just chose axe to help do a bit more damage while taking a bunch of punishment.

If you have two combat rogues in WoW you can have a good basis of comparison as they have the exact same skills (I am just going to say talents as well because at least before I stopped playing there was really only one way to go for each tree) and can only bring dps to a fight. In this case you can’t just easily slot every character into a nice cookie cutter.

I also agree with KittyWitty about reviving downed players or being generally helpful. Reviving players in combat would pretty much never happen except in the more serious guilds where a person is considered of prime importance. This also makes things harder to gauge because EVERYONE can revive someone. There is no dedicated healer who can do it and is expected to when called for.

It seems like a lot of potential bookkeeping for little pay off.

Agreed, Dinky is by far one of my favorite Npc’s.

I enjoy him in much the same ways I enjoyed Minsc (for those who played the Baldur’s Gate series).
