I too would like to see a Linux client for GW2. Linux is my preferred operating system and has a large, loyal base of gamers that are eager to support games that in turn offer clients that work on Linux.
One only need to take a look at the HumbleBundle totals to see that Linux users are avid gamers and are willing to contribute for those that support their platform. Indie developers and distribution platforms like Desura have found that offering Linux support bring tons of new customers. Watching their example, even Steam now has a Linux client in public beta, after a thriving invite-only beta (in which, I was lucky to participate). The Steam storefront now features a Linux tab!
More and more developers have found that using cross-platform and open technologies (ie OpenGL as an option) for developing their games means easier porting and compatibility – Windows, OSX, Linux, iOS, Android etc… are all available, as opposed to being locked into proprietary, platform-dependent technologies. In fact, one major reason for World of Warcraft’s rise to prominence was its OpenGL option, allowing it to be run both on OSX and for tools like WINE to help players run the Windows version on Linux. It was much more difficult to get competing MMOs to run on non-Windows OS at the time, thanks to heavy dependence on platform exclusive technologies and inflexible coding (ie. Age of Conan). In fact, even if GW2 cannot secure the man-hours to create a Linux client at this time, I think it would be considerably beneficial to have someone ensuring that the client works well with WINE and CrossOver; a fine stop-gap measure for the time being that will encourage Linux users to look favorably upon GW2.
I am confident that a Linux client for Guild Wars 2 would be well received by the community and well worth the investment for ArenaNet; benefiting the title both now and in the future.
