You might consider WvW – it’s actually a lot more popular than sPvP. Personally, I think it’s a lot more fun.
You don’t mind dying a lot do you?
Actually have been trying WvW all this while. dying a lot is ok, since I get gd xp and other gd stuff.
Heey Xymas,
I am the guy youre looking for.. Play much WvW, only ranger like 1000 hours+..
So where to start
Ill gona take an better look on what ill use and discribe it below here.
Traits: some of them are very important such as Trap potency and Quickdraw
overall the traits gives you good dmg/defenses (and thats what you need in WvW)Gear: WEAPONS.. ill use shortbow for main and sword/dagger as seceundary. the shortbow is for the cripple and the daze and for the flacking dmg. it gives you good ammount of bleed and conditions. the sowrd/dagger is for the close combat. this all in rabid stats.
Gear: ARMOR.. ill use youre armor mate!!
ill love the soldier stats as an kind of base stats for survi. with the traveler runes its very good for you speed, boons and conditions.
Gear: TRINKETS.. ill use all rabid trinkets.. why shall you think? Survi. for the prec and for the condition dmg..
Gear: FOOD.. Koi Cake<— Look at it and you know why.. (and cheap to ;P)
Now i will discibe how i use this build..
When ill see enemy’s ill pop my elite, fire a couple of shots with my shortbow and let my pets attack so they get frosted.. ill use my nmmr 5 on my shortbow. BAM daze!! criplle them with my shortbow.. then ill leap to them with my sword/dagger combi.. drop the 2 traps BAM!!! chilled and criplled and lots of cc dmg..Ill evade a lot with my sword and dagger combi and spamm crips and bloods on them! (even it sounds like an bad gang in LA).. Iff you think kitten hese to powerful close then swap to shortbow use skill 3 and you back on mid range..
Tips:
1. Use the ranger as scout
2. Use you sword as an escape weapon
3. Always keep koi cake on for massive cond. time
4. Try to roamme with 2-5 players.. ( spotter boost youre prec)
5. KNOW HOW TO USE AN RANGER!!Hope ill help you a little with this.. iff not pm mee in game or leave one message behind here..
greetzz an happy Ranger
Hi kitten, thanks for taking the time to write all this!
For the past few days, noticed a few rangers who choose opening strike/pierce and probably go for the 1500 range. Makes me wonder which is more useful, shortbow or longbow when it comes to dmg/def balance in WvW.
Will try out the sword and buy the koi cake. Never thought of buying food for Wvw all this while. I try to roam with others, but when most are with the commander raiding camps/keeps/castles, I find I usually have to make my way to the commander on my own. That’s when I would get ambushed sometimes.
Looking forward to talking to or meeting you in game.
A few tips:
Change your traits to 20 20 30 0 0. you will need the extra condition cleanse.And change your stats to be a a little more offensive. a good mix of Valkyrie/knights/Berserker gear should get you to a decent spot damage wise.
As for utility skills, healing spring, lightning reflexes and signet of renewal are a must in my opinion. As for your third skill, against Thieves I would take sick em.
Use more defensive pets. Fern hound or bears are good, I personally like to have one spider as sick em works well with them.
Longbow/greatsword is good, but you should try sword/axe at some point. That works really well and has a lot of combo potential
I’ll be posting a full build that I’ve been working on for a while now when I’m home from work, that should be along the lines of how you like to play.
Hi Frosty, thanks for the tips.
Have been using signet of renewal, wild and hunt all this while. Am using Rampage for elite skill. But still like you’ve said, extra condition cleanse is definitely needed. Will try out the traits you have mentioned here.
Not sure what would make a good mix of Valkyrie/knights/Berserker gear. As written in the first post, the mix and match is what gets me feeling a little lost at the moment.
Can I ask you about using bears? Read that by using bears in WvW, you are making yourself an easy target. So perhaps I should go for fern hounds instead?
Yeh, will go try out the sword/axe. Not dispatching enemies fast enough with my current weapon choice.
Looking forward to learning from your full build.
Hi all, am a newbie to pvp, as in never tried pvp in any mmo before. Have been searching for newbie friendly arenas at the pvp interface, but have not been successful so far. Anything specific that I can look out for? Hoping to find players who are friendly and helpful to newbies.
Currently, I have full soldier’s armour and am using Zerker Longbow and Greatsword. For trinkets, I only have 1 ascended amulet: Mark of the Tethyos Houses. I have no idea on what or how to choose despite reading guides on various builds and on ascended trinkets.
Traits-wise, 30/20/20. Pets-wise, using lynx and ice-drake. I find myself getting killed very easily when confronted by thieves in wvw. Hoping to get some good advice from the experts here so I can enjoy using my ranger in wvw.
Was initially happy when I read a post that shows a rangers guild exist, but a few minutes later, discovered an update that it was disbanded. Would really appreciate some good ranger training (plus good advice on builds, weapons and armour) with people who use their rangers often in wvw.
The onboard graphics worked after I pulled out the card. Noob me had thought both onboard and dedicated would be active side by side just by plugging off the dvi cable from one and plugging on to the other.
Thanks all for your attention and patience. It’s my 1st time experiencing GPU failure (RMAed my mobo a few months ago). Asked IT repair professional (without bringing down my pc) and he too ruled out overheating and psu / motherboard failure when I merely told him I had BSODs when playing GW2.
Thinking of getting either GTX 650 or 660 now.
Update: onboard DVI and VGA ports are not working.
@Lexandro, sirsquishy
Thanks for making this issue easy to understand for me by sharing your experiences.
Mentally, it’s just hard to rationalise why a failing GPU would continue to work fine as long as I’m not playing GW2. Playing free MMORPG games were fine. I had thought it was mainly due to an overheating issue, so I dusted off vents and fans and reapplied thermal paste. I even played GW2 with one side panel taken off, hoping that the crashes would go away. But they didn’t. I have one front bottom intake and one top rear exhaust by the way.
This morning, I had a few BSODs while playing GW2. One of them caught my attention: DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION
This is a new BSOD for these series of in-game crashes. Have never come up before until this morning. There was even a loud buzzing noise coming out from my speakers I think. Any idea what this might point to?
As a last resort I would try out the onboard GPU. Would update again.

@Ok I Did It
Normal PC usage (internet surfing and word processing) would give GPU temps hovering within the range of 40 – 50C as monitored by GPU-Z (sometimes would get 50 or 53, but would drop back to fluctuating from 40 to 43).
@himself and @Brother Grimm.5176
I have reseated my memory and graphics card. Dusted off my graphics card heatsink and fan, reapplied newly purchased thermal paste for both GPU and CPU and everything seems fine other than GW2 in-game crashes.
Update: Continuously crashes to HTSFE (hyper transport sync flood error) when playing for about 20 minutes or more. This is after repairing client and updating to latest Nvidia beta driver, 331.93.

@Brother Grimm.5176 – have you reseated your memory and / or video card?
Have yet to do so, will try it out later. As a note, before I started playing GW2, I have tried reseating memory or video card before, but they didn’t work out. Probably, it could be some other problems.
@sirsquishy.8531
These 2 BSODS came up yesterday.

2 probably related screen pics attached.
I have been getting frequent BSODs/freezes/crashes since I started playing the game a few weeks ago.
Since my motherboard bios and directX drivers are all updated to their latest versions, I decided to try updating my Nvidia graphics card driver from known stable version 314.22 to the latest 331.82.
Note: Recommended Nvidia driver settings from forum stickies have been applied (power management, anti-aliasing, vertical sync, etc) and similar stuff is done for in-game settings as well. Avast Anti-virus shields are completely disabled and silent/gaming mode is checked.
A BSOD/freeze came up within a few minutes of gameplay and so I quickly performed a clean uninstall using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from the Nvidia forums. Reinstalled 314.22 and gameplay experience is back to how it is now – frequency interval sbetween each BSOD/freeze/crash occurrence is stretched much longer compared to any of the post 314.22 drivers.
Hope I can get to resolve such problems soon.
My PC build:
AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor
Biostar A880G+ motherboard
4GB DDR3 RAM
Palit Nvidia GTX 460 768MB graphics card
Windows 7 64bit Service Pack 1
