Guild Wars 2

Hey guys. So, I formed a fractal party with some casual guildies (the Tempest and I are somewhere in the middle between casual and hardcore) a while back so that we could all learn the ropes and then see how far we could get. Fast-forward to scale 76, and we’ve come to our first DPS check. At the Old Tom fight in Uncategorized, we ran out of batteries right about when he hit 75% HP. Needless to say, everyone panicked and some people got poisoned to death. I run sword/pistol Thief, so I was able to evade/blind-spam and sustain myself with signet of malice and invigorating precision until Old Tom finally went down. So, now’s as good a time as any to regroup and reconsider our approach. As you can see by the below party comp, we’re far from “meta.”

1) Mesmer (i.e., non-Chrono, GS camper, clone/phantasm build w/occasional shatters)
2) Reaper (Minionmancer, GS)
3) Druid (Healing Hybrid Build, LB & Staff)
4) Tempest (Auramancer, D/Wh)
5) Thief (DPS, S/P)

I’ll start with what’s out of the question: I won’t ask people to switch their professions (though our Tempest is willing to bring her staff Daredevil). That being said, how should we optimize?

1) Obviously, our Mesmer should be running Chrono for alacrity and quickness, and start using sword/x.

2) I’m at a loss here. At least he can facetank things? I mean, so can I, but maintain high DPS in the process.

3) I know that healers are unnecessary in anything but raids, so should our Druid just switch to Berserker gear and focus on DPS buffs? And start using a sword?

4) I don’t think a change is necessary. Or should she run Daredevil and focus on DPS to make up for the overal lack of it in the party?

5) I suppose I should run staff, too, but I kind of like my evade/blind spam.

Most of you are probably thinking I should just give up or take a long leap off of Cliffside. What I’ve tried so far is to bring professions that buff everyone’s DPS, like PS Warrior at first and then Herald. But at least two people in the party are always on the perimeter, so said buffs are kind of wasted. Not to mention, I found both Warrior/Berserker and Herald to be incredibly dull (no offense to those of you who enjoy those playstyles!). And I got sick of chasing people with my Herald to make sure they were within range of my buffs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I lost mine ages ago…. :P Like others here, I actually still enjoy map completion. And my 16 characters can substantiate that claim. I’m also on NA and can get on between 5:00-9:00 PST. Feel free to add me in-game as well!

My refund request was denied and I was quoted a 48-hour deadline. I purchased my fourth copper-fed salvage-o-matic just a couple months ago.

Yikes! You just described me and my feelings perfectly (except I bought my computer in April prior GW2 release).

I’m certainly not an exception. I’ve been playing single-player games more then ever (Fallout:NV and it’s major mod communities have been getting quite a workout from me lately). I still play EVE, although a bit half-heartedly. Seeing developers constantly turn away from themselves (and, in turn, the comunities they’ve gathered based on that identity) has taken away my ability to feel invested in anything online.

Make no mistake, this loss of faith is about communities and not players. Back at release, I almost immediately found a guild that suited my playstyle perfectly- casual people that like to expore, hang out and do random things for no particular reason (party at the LA fountain!), and just go out and have fun with the game. So what if it takes 2 hours to run AC path 2? We had a good time doing it. GW2 was designed for people like us, and we knew it. Then Ascended gear happened, and everyone knew that Anet had given in after only 3 months. My guild became a ghost town over the course of a single weekend. Now, I can’t find a guild I like at all- either they are highly focused on only one specific gameplay aspect, or just don’t do anything with each other. The ‘come hang out and have fun’ attitude is gone. The shape of the entire GW2 community was forever changed. Without that kind of stability, no online game feels like something I’m willing to sink time and money into anymore.

What server are you on? My guild still does all those casual things you described. I can send you an invite, if you happen to be on Dragonbrand.

Hmm…I didn’t see engineers specifically mentioned. Would a zerk nades build, doing decent DPS while spamming stacks upon stacks of vulnerability (basically +DPS for the entire group), be welcome in today’s dungeon runs?
