High Latency, Bad Drivers?

Thanks for the responses, Ilithis and Kyllaa. I will look into cleaning out the fan and as much as I can, assuming I can reach it easily. One video in particular makes cracking this Samsung 510 open look like quite an endeavor.

On a positive note, I’ve started running a small exterior fan that can help dissipate the heat, and maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but it seems to have helped with the lag. My temps now with a low processing burden have gone down to about 70c. I was able to run Star Trek Online last night without any of the nasty lag spikes that I’d been experiencing. However, the lag still happens with GW2 todat, though it seems to be less frequent and less severe than before.

I’m currently running the same driver that Nvidia recommended. I’m still working with one of the Nvidia techs to see if we can improve the latency. I’m going to run some more latency mon tests and watch the temperature in the meantime.

Anything else you’ve thought of that I could look into?

Just a small update: I’ve tried several different sets of Nvidia drivers, so far none have fixed the problem. I tried on older driver set, clean installed, no change. I also tried the driver set that was recommended by an Nvidia tech support guy, and no change. Both drivers are still causing the most amount of dcp latency when I use latency monitor.

I tried to update my directx, but the installer told me that I was already up to date. I’m thinking I might uninstall completely and re-install the directx and see what happens.

I’ve also starting running CPUID, checking the temperature and power usage of my processors and card. The card temperature seems alright, but my processors are running either at or above 80c, up to as much as 91c even with a low processing burden. Also, my wattage seems a bit screwy, jumping from 15 to 30 to 55 watts, also under a low burden, regardless of whether I’m plugged in or on battery power.

Any thoughts about these observations?

Thanks for the post Kylaa. I agree, it couldn’t hurt for me to get a cooling pad. As far as the DirectX update goes, I’ve tried to update it, but the updater has been giving me the message that my version is current. Afterwards, it asks if I want to update anyway, but then it seems to have an error, and I can’t honestly tell if anything actually updated or not.

I will try to look for a newer nvidia driver – I think the beta version of the newest one is available. If not, I guess I’ll have to uninstall the drivers and find the old ones somehow. Any recommendation on how to handle the drivers? Anyone else have suggestions?

Hello mates. I could really use some help from some tech savvy people. This is a long post – you have been warned.

I’ve been playing GW2 since launch, and I’ve always had a little lag – usually in events with large numbers of people or enemies. But for the past month or so, I’ve been having EXTREMELY BAD lag, I’m talking 20-30 seconds long, with FPS dropping to 1-3 range. I’ve not had this problem until recently. I haven’t made any hardware changes. I’ve tried lowering the graphics settings for better performance, but there is no difference between the lowest settings and the medium settings that I generally use. The game ran well enough for me up until the end of March, when all of this seemed to start. At the time, I thought perhaps it was due to using a different network, or changes in the last update with Super Adventure Box, but I’m becoming more and more convinced that it’s a driver issue. It has continued to happen on my usual network, and it’s even occurring in other online games.

A guild mate of mine pointed me to Latency Checker, which shows the same pattern of intermittent lag, lasting 20-30 seconds, then improving for a time before happening again a few minutes later. As I started to research it, I found Latency Monitor, which is suggesting that my Nvidia driver and DirectX drivers are to blame.

Is anyone else having this issue with the newest Nvidia Driver, 3.14.22? I updated the driver about 2 weeks before I noticed this problem. I also wondered why DirectX would be acting up. The only thing I can think of is that I installed an older game, Civ4, which included a DirectX version in the installation, about a month before I noticed the insane lag.

To throw another wrench in the system, I’m having occasional power issues as well. My laptop will stop charging even though it’s plugged in and go to battery power. If I unplug and then re-plug in to the outlet, it seems to fix it. This seems to happen the most while I’m running something with a high processing requirement, like GW2 or other games. The lag I mentioned beforehand occurs separate from the power issues, and is the same whether I’m on AC or battery power.

Anyone who knows more about this have any recommendations? I’ve thought about trying to unistall the driver and reinstall an older version, but honestly I’m not even sure which version I had before. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just adding my two cents, for what their worth. Been having severe lag since the late March/ early April. NA player playing on EU server Piken Square. Previously game ran very well, with typical slowdowns in mass zergs and large boss fights. Yet now I’ve been getting at worst 30 sec lags every few minutes, making the spvp and wvw unplayable and pve barely so. I’m wondering if the update didn’t have something to do with it, but I’m open to suggestions. Also seem to be lagging on other online games. Latency checker is giving me yellow and red bars during these events. I’m in the process of checking/updating drivers, pings, and traces. Any ideas?

Wow, I’ve been having the same problems as you, Elurya. Severe, highly annoying lag lasting 30 seconds roughly, regardless of area or activity. I assumed initially that it was because I’d started playing on a different network, but the problem has continued since returning to my home network. Then I thought it might be due to the big patch at the beginning of April. But seeing that your problem was fixed just from port forwarding, maybe I should make sure mine have been forwarded correctly. Any idea why this became an issue for you only a few weeks ago and not earlier?
