Some ideas about commanders. Pardon duplicates.
- Give commanders special map tools to ping, draw and coordinate attacks. This would include things like setting priority to objectives, and setting up way points.
- Give commanders a war horn, a signal that a push is about to be made in a given area and everyone should rally at that point
- Give commanders he ability to designate sub-commanders for better coordination of multiple groups. IE. Sub group A – Go east. Sub group B – Go west!
- Make commander chat a different colour so it’s easy to track comms
- Allow users to “honor” commanders they like, and ignore commanders the don’t. This would weed out crappy commanders and allow the great ones to be recognized for their efforts. Some good ideas in LoL’s “honor” system (ie if someone does good, or is generally helpful, you can honor them, in a number of sub categories). These honors could be worth Karma or badges, to incentives quality leadership.
- Further to flagging bad commanders: If a certain commander receives enough negative votes, they are stripped of commander for a short period (24 hrs). This would allow someone else to take control, but not prevent them from trying again in the future. Which leads me to…
- Allow commanders to flag themselves as “learning”. To me this is like putting a “new driver” sticker on your car. People may still get behind the wheel with you, but they cut you some slack if you make a mistake. Further to this, perhaps a commander “level” would be helpful. An easy way for the public to know if a commander is rank 1, newbie, or rank 10 and should know better.
- Allow commanders to request siege build sites (could tie into point 1)
- Allow commanders in a given zone request assistance from other commanders in other zones. This could drastically change the dynamic of a battle (though I recognize queues are real)
In the end I agree with most suggestions on the forums about making the commander role a position to be respected.
