Initially the game was entirely unplayable, both at retina and lower resolutions. In many cases I could walk pretty smoothly forwards, however when turning around it would stutter extremely badly, like less than a frame per second.
However I have tweaked the settings a bit, and found that the single most effectively way to improve performance (besides the obvious like lowering the resolution) is to turn OFF reflections. Reflections has a HUGE performance hit.
The settings I use now are: 1440×900, pretty much everything to High making the game look very well. With a few exceptions:
-NO Reflections
-Shadows on Medium
I hope this helps someone. At least I would recommend that you try the above if you are having performance issues on mac.
