The 10 ways to make Thief viable again

in Thief

I think the problem with rolling some skills or traits into baseline is that the professions are meant to represent many different archetypes. I could be wrong but I think the thief is supposed to cover the “pirate” archetype as well. If you roll blinding powder into baseline it wouldn’t really be a pirate anymore and instead would be pigeonholed into “ninja.” I think it is more about what is thematically appropriate than what is balanced. I would personally like blinding powder on f2 for the way that I have developed and conceptualized my thief.

And the question is: does that really make sense? We can already “permastealth” if we want to – only thing hindering us is the self inflicted reveal – when exactly do you want to button smash stealth yourself – you don’t need it (if you’re not an OH dagger (miss miss miss miss) or staff thief – but for that the utility as it is is usually enough). You would need the blind though but I have been called stupid over several posts because I associated Blinding Powder with blind

This is kind of what I was getting at. Even though stealth has a unique interaction with thieves (with the stealth 1 skills), I think it would go against Anet’s design for how professions function. If you want to stealth a lot, you can do that. If you want a build that doesn’t incorporate much stealth, you can do that too! I’m just going to ignore the blind part of the skill for this discussion :P.

Edit: It’s also a blast finisher too! So there are a number of potential balance issues but these could be resolved. Because of this, I am primarily focused on what it would mean from a design perspective

Idea for New Weapon: Greater Focus

Lol Great Focus … what a term …

Seriously, rather give this game some real senseful new weapon types, that coplement the classes and give them either more build diversity by becoming integrated additional part of the core weapon set that the Basic Classes can use, or add them as new specialized Weapons for upcoming new Elite-Specializations of the Basic Classes which is a perfect way of easily introducing new weapon types into this game.

This game needs new weapon types like Flails, Clubs, Greataxes, like Chain Weapons(Whips, Kusarigamas, 3-Section Nunchakus) like Fist Weapons (Gloves/Gauntlets/Claws), like Throwing Weapons (Chakrams, Shurikens, Boomerangs), like Polearm Weapons (Halberds, Lances, Naginatas, Spears (rename UW Spears to Harpoons and replace Harpoon Guns with Crossbows (as both shoot bolts), but Crossbows can be used UW as like on land …)

If ANet could do this and could redesign Focus Items into “Artefacts” and “Relics” (one for 1h, one for 2h), then we would I think basically have also what the OP suggests here

Something like “Magic Tomes/Orbs” could fall then under Relics as they would be Focus Weapons that you need to use 2hs for to use them, while something like Gloves/Gauntlets are rather Artefacts, that dont need two hands, they can be used with just one hand, be it main or offhand as you wish

I’d love to play a Mesmer for example, that wields Orbs for example like this Character from Soul Calibur to cause chaos and havor that way as a Chronomancer (see attached picture), giving the Chronomancer/Mesmer a kind of “Fortuneteller Style” that predicts the future.
However somethign that could work onl,y, of mesmers as Basic class would receive that weapon as part of their Core Gameplay, or of it would replace the Shield and Shield instead would become part of the Basic Mesmer

Viola Gameplay

I know, Beat em ups cant be really comparec with RPGs, completely different comat system ect. but it is still a inspiration for what you can do with somethign like Orbs in combat in a fantasy kind of way that would suit to GW2, especially as Mesmer that control all kinds of “Spheres of Chaos”

Yes I love that pic! I main mesmer and I think it would be awesome. I also love all the weapon types you listed out. The artefact and relic would be cool. I don’t really care what they’re called tbh, I would just really like to see more weapons in the game.

That’s the other thing I was thinking of. Some kind of gauntlet would be cool. I was thinking more along the lines of the weapon the cryomancer from skyforge uses… Something that floats between the character’s hands

A two-handed focus might be cool for future elite specializations. It could allow the user to utilize raw magical energy to create projectile or melee attacks. If “greater focus” isn’t a good name then maybe “primal focus”?

It feels to me that, to be as comparatively effective as everyone else, you are forced to use the elite specializations. It has been a while now and it seems like everybody is still using them in pvp and pve. They were hyped as a different way to play but they just feel outright better to me.

Yes. Its called Pay-To-Win. You can play GW2 for free but you will be weaker compared to other players who payed for the HoT.

Now suppose Anet nerfes the elites so they become somewhat similar or less useful then main professions. People who pay for HoT want something for their money. If they still end up using their non-elite specs, they have payed for nothing.

You make a fair point. However, I purchased HoT with the assumption that they would be equal to the base class. I wanted options, not things that are necessary to be relevant. They should provide a different style of play and not something that is strictly better.

This is obviously more of a personal opinion than anything else but… I really don’t like how elite specializations function. It feels to me that, to be as comparatively effective as everyone else, you are forced to use the elite specializations. It has been a while now and it seems like everybody is still using them in pvp and pve. They were hyped as a different way to play but they just feel outright better to me. Assuming this is true, this has implications for those who choose not to buy HoT in that they are inherently kitten because they didn’t purchase the expansion. Of course, you there are some viable builds that don’t use elite specializations but I feel like there has to be a larger skill difference for them to work well. Maybe it will get better after the next elite specializations are released. Maybe I will feel like I have options again.

I would just like to reiterate that these are personal opinions about the way the game makes me feel. If you want to discuss this, great! If not, then I don’t have the energy to mess with trolls. Thank you!

out of curiosity – which dungeon and about which path you asked?

It was CoF P1.

So I’m a little confused. Do people think I’m blaming the f2pers? I was simply posing a question.

Given the extremely leading title and your subsequent statements, I think you’re being disingenuous. If the toxic person had mentioned they were f2p, then it might be fair to raise a question about f2p players (anecdotal though your evidence would be), but without that you’re just picking our a random group — that can’t even defend themselves here! — and demonizing them.

In other words, you’re either picking on f2p players for no reason, or your post is wildly far afield from your intentions, because it sure as kitten looks like you’re picking on f2p players for no reason.

I am not blaming anyone. Read the now edited original post please.

I read it. I’m still not convinced. At the very least, can you agree that bringing up f2p players was arbitrary, groundless, and a mistake? If not, then I really don’t see how your edit changes what you said originally.

Did you read the whole post?

The purpose of the thread was to see what opinions people had about the effects of f2p on the community. How can it do that without bringing up f2p?

Yes, I read it.

Let’s try a hypothetical situation. Let’s say you’re in a car accident. The other driver was at fault and was kinda a jerk to you about what happened, so you go to a car forum and post a thread asking, “Are the Dutch causing car accidents?” You have no reason to think that this person was Dutch and, indeed, there was no reason for anyone to assume this person might have been Dutch. The car accident wasn’t even any different from the thousands of car accidents that have happened in the past. You just read a news article a few months ago that mentioned a rise in in Dutch immigration so you thought that that might’ve had something to do with it.

Do you see how someone’s question about whether the Dutch are causing car accidents would seem bizarrely pointed, like they had a bigoted axe to grind against the Dutch? There’s no indication of any cause-and-effect relationship between the car accident and the increase in Dutch immigration, which means the relationship has been conjured entirely out of thin air.

(Incidentally, and I hope this is clear, but I chose the Dutch as an example to be especially absurd. One could imagine other examples using something more topical but I specifically don’t want to use real-world examples of this sort of free association.)

The following is a quote from my original post. Please read it carefully.

“If you must know, the incident that I described (and a slew of others) caused me to think about the community as a whole. I then entertained the thought that guild wars 2 going free to play caused these changes (derived from a highly subjective observation) in the overall attitudes of the players. This thought occurred because guild wars 2 going free to play was already primed in my mind from all of the advertisements and coverage on the topic. Wondering what other players thought of this, I made this thread and overall I think this has been a very successful thread. I have heard a lot of different opinions regarding the issue that the post is primarily about. Thank you to everyone who has posted here!”

I would like to reiterate that I am not blaming anything on anyone. This thread resulted from a series of thoughts that DO NOT reflect my opinion. I have stated that at the time of posting I had no position on the issue.

Wow, out of respect for your intellect, I’m just going to say that was most disingenuous of you to make that remark.

The topic of your thread is “Is f2p causing community toxicity?” and your pretext was based on a situation that you had no probable cause to attribute to F2Pers. You actually think given the topic title and such a weak pretext that people won’t assume you’re out to smear the F2Pers?

There are jerks in every game community, and you’re not making things better by so tenuously linking this one bad incident with F2Pers when you’ve not stated a single thing that indicates the jerks belong to that community. “Was I being melodramatic?” Without question, yes.

Congratulations on starting a flame war, exactly the kind of thing jerks will do.

I have to agree on this one. All im seeing in this thread is an elitist OP who probably showed bad behaviour towards his party and got rightfully kicked out of it. Now he is here blaming f2p players, like so many “elitist” players do in the game, because they feel superior next to those f2p players.
I played a lot with f2p around the starting areas and i never saw any bad attitude from them. Most of the bad attitude i saw since the game went free to play was in fact from veteran players towards those f2p accounts. I think this topic is just another example of this.
OP if you don’t want your topic to sound like you’re blaming free to play players about this, you should probably never mentioned free to play players in your topic title. As it stands, right now, its more then obvious you’re blaming this on free to play players without any solid proof to back this claim.
If you just asked a simple quostiong like you claim you had, you would never get that kind of answer. Why do I have a feeling you’re not telling the whole story?

I am not blaming anyone. Please read the now edited original post.

I just had a moderately annoying experience. After finishing a dungeon run with a PUG with relative ease, I asked if they wanted to do the next easy path in the dungeon, to which they replied “Kitten you” and immediately kicked me from the party. My guildie, who was running the dungeon with me, laughed when I said I had reported them for verbal abuse. I realize that they were probably joking but it’s so hard to tell via text alone.

Was I being melodramatic? Why do we put up with people like this? To tie this back to the title, I understand that almost a month ago, guild wars 2 went f2p or “free to try” or whatever. Could this be adversly affecting the amazing community (overall) that we have here?

Sorry I dont buy this story. It is either made up or you asked rudely.
No one answers like that when someone asks a simple question. Never seen it done to anyone, ever.

I don’t really care whether you buy it or not because I know it happened. And no I wasn’t rude, in fact I barely said anything through the run. Regardless, the story was meant to give a little context to the post (which I understand now was poorly done).

Yes. Because what happened (some random person being rude) has no visible ties to f2p accounts. Since there isn’t any tie to f2p, then you bringing it up says that to you the two are connected (or else you wouldn’t have thought it) and that you are blaming f2p accounts for this behavior.

No. What it says is that I think the two MIGHT be connected. Hence why I created a thread and engaged in a discussion on the topic. However, upon reading the comments here, I am leaning towards the position that free vs paid status has no effect on how toxic the community is.

I have a lot going on with school and work but I will try to work scheduled events into my schedule.

Hello,

I am looking for a guild that completes guild missions at a time that is convenient for me. The best times (I am in Eastern Standard Time) for me currently are Saturday all day and Sunday up until around 2pm. My time zone is -4 hours from server time (if it’s 5pm in server time then it’s 1pm in my time zone). I get kind of confused trying to convert it so I apologize in advance for any confusion you might have after reading this lol.

I am only looking for a guild to do guild missions with. If posters that are looking for members could put the times that their guilds do these guild missions (in server time is fine haha).

Thank you,

I don’t get it. Today I am running into the same issues that I was before the “fix.” It now lasts about 20 to 30 minutes before crashing my internet connection (for everyone on the network). I tried updating the network card driver to a newer (but not current) version with no success.

The router is kinda crappy. It’s a zoom adsl modem/router combo, model number 5792, but I don’t think the router is the issue anyways. Like I said, I was able to play the game on two other computers that were on the network with no issues.

Also, the router is new and hadn’t been updated prior to updating the firmware in hopes of fixing the issue I was having. The issue was still occurring prior to updating the firmware.

Finally, after many headaches and frustration, I think I was able to resolve this issue. My Gigabyte 970A-D3P motherboard had a driver on its onboard network card (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller) that was causing issues. The latest driver that was installed was not allowing Guild Wars 2 to function properly. After rolling back the driver (to the 6/17/2014 driver, version: 7.88.617.2014) I was able to get the game to work for well over an hour without crashing, which is a marked improvement over the previous 2-5 minute maximum run time. I will post an update tomorrow to let you know if it is still functioning properly.

I already ran this by the support team to no avail but I was wondering if I could get some other perspectives and thoughts on this.

Here’s the story. Whenever I run guild wars 2 on my computer it causes the router to crash and kick everyone using it off of the internet within about 2-5 minutes of playing and the internet drops for only about 30 seconds. I can play other online games with no problems whatsoever. Additionally, I can play on my brother’s computer on the same network (with both of us hardlined to the router) without causing any issues. Nothing I have tried has worked. I don’t think it could be a router setting because it works just fine on other computers using the same router.

Things I’ve tried:

-Remove AVAST (there is no antivirus software on my computer right now)

-Change the MSCONFIG to only run windows stuff on startup and I also disabled the stuff in the services tab

-Temporarily disable the firewall

Recently added to the list:

-Update LAN card drivers and disable automatic updates on router (thanks to Beldin)

-Port Forwarding

-Update Router Firmware
