Picture this – You have an exotic sword with a certain skin, say, skin A which you happen to like very much. One day, whilst adventuring, you happen upon a second skin, skin B, which you also happen to like. Currently, if you were to put skin B onto your sword, you would lose skin A. The only solution is to buy a second exotic sword and put skin B on that sword. If you have multiple items with multiple skins that you like, you end up having to gear your character multiple times over.
My suggestion is this – provide a way to remove the skin from its item and keep the skin in a similar fashion to the skins you buy from the gem store or the skins you get from HoM. Maybe create a mystic forge recipe where you put in an item and a transformation stone and you get back a skin and a “skinless item”, which cannot be equipped until a new skin is placed on it.
tl;dr – provide a way to re-skin an item without losing its current skin.
