I’d pay $4 for an extra bank tab, that’s something that useful across all your characters.
But the point here is one that all these microtransaction based games miss.
50% of something is worth an infinite amount more than 100% of nothing.
I know, and I’m not the only one who knows, that;
- digital goods are created ONCE
- They have an infinitesimal storage requirement
This means that the usual overhead associated with selling items is almost completely absent.
So why am I paying extortionate rates for virtual items?
The answer is, I’m not. I refuse to.
Okay, you’re right. I’d be willing to pay a bit more for a bank slot as it’s shared between all characters. But any single use or single-character upgrades should be a lot cheaper than they currently are.
I apologize if someone has already said similar above – I tried to read the entire thread, but the details of economic policies are beyond the scope of my understanding.
I’ve tried to reason out why the variable exchange rate bothers me, but others have explained it better.
For me, bottom line is this:
At launch, Gems were too expensive for me to purchase with Real Money. I had no desire to buy cosmetic items for more than a dollar or two. They were, however, very cheap to purchase with Gold. (I acknowledge that they were probably too cheap then.) So I bought some dye packs.
Now, Gems are now too expensive to purchase with either gold OR real money. My perceived value of items in the gem store has not changed, but neither method for buying them is worthwhile. I want to buy more dye packs to complete my collection, but there is no way in Kitten I’m going to pay 300% more for them now.
If you’re going to keep this flexible exchange rate for Gold→Gems, please for crying out loud give us more Gems for Cash so I can buy something for at least ONE reasonable price!
If anyone cares, this is about what I’d be willing to pay for things in the Gem Shop:
Character Slot – $5.00
Character Bag Slot – $1.00
Bank Space – $2.50
Black Lion Key – $1.00 for four
Dye Pack – $1.00
Consumable Buffs – $0.50
If prices were closer to this level, I’d be buying stuff several times a month.
I’ve noticed this quite a few times with the thief’s equivalent short bow skill. Sometimes I don’t jump backward. Usually if I do it again I move the second time, so it doesn’t appear to be related to a slope.
I agree – I would be willing to spend some cash on gems every month or so to support Anet if it was worth it financially. If they gave more gems per dollar, or reduced the cost of most of the items, I would be willing. But yes, $2 for a single Black Lion Key, or $3 for a Dye Pack is way too much.
Linsey, your first comment above seems to indicate that GW2 has no logging system to verify players’ stories about lost items? In other MMOs where I’ve lost items, they just have to check the log to see when/where it happened to verify, then send me the item via in-game mail. If GW2 has no player activity logs AND no item replacement tools, that seems like a huge oversight and something that should be rectified.
Rule abiding players should not be punished (or in this case denied resolution on bugs in the game) for fear of some potential future security issue. But I guess since hacking is already a big concern in this game (I saw something like five multiboxers and two teleport hackers last night), maybe that needs to be fixed first?
I’ve noticed this happens sometimes when a mob is on a different level surface than the players, such as standing on a rock or ledge. It looks like this Brute ended up standing on a rock and may have triggered this.
I understand when it happens because you’re on a separate ledge and the mob can’t reach you, preventing you from getting an easy kill. But it seems like this happens a lot with minor changes in terrain too, which is maybe something Anet should look into fixing?
Thanks, deathTouch! Until now, I didn’t realize that the Mystic Clover recipe always gives you SOMETHING, and that something is often crafting mats that are required in other parts of the Legendary recipe. That makes it MUCH more worthwhile.
The gem-to-gold exchange rate not being fixed already affects the economy, IMHO. I think it’s ridiculous that a currency (gems) has one fixed exchange rate (cash) and one flexible (gold) rate. It seems like it would be frustrating for customers in both directions, and not beneficial to anyone.
“Blast it, I wanted to buy another dye pack, but now it costs almost 1g instead of 50 silver!”
“What the heck, I spent $5 on gems last week to convert for gold, but this week I’m getting 10% less for my money? Forget that!”
Maybe the intent is to discourage people spending real money to get gold? Or to say that cash-to-gems is a better option, so just use that? Either way it kinda sucks to me.
Last night I had the same problem. My wife asked me for help with her Asuran story mission Salt in the Wound. We were both on the same map standing next to each other, not an overflow, in a party, and it wouldn’t give me the dialog box to join her when she entered the mission.
The only possible additional clue I can offer is prior to this we were having issues with the map not accurately showing where we were in relation to each other until we were within 50-100 feet. (For example, her character portrait was black and her location dot on the map was in the center, despite her being in the northwest corner of the map. Once she got close to me, the portrait and map dot updated.)
Having this problem today trying to join a friend’s “Salt in the Wound” story mission. We are partied up, standing next to each other, she enters and disappears, no prompt for me.
Confirmed, I saw this as well in Cursed Shore while attempting to retake a fort.
I also had many issues on the Iron Marches map last night (Ferguson’s Crossing server). Apologies for the lack of specific names on some of this:
Several escort events had the NPCs standing in one place and nothing ever happening. Clearing a path through the area south of Lake Carnifex, escorting the guards along the Wall in the southeast, and at least one or two more. The only escort quest that was working was the trainer with four devourers.
I had the same issues with the Separatist search…hounds would run out to trees and stand there barking, but I couldn’t do anything with the tree.
Also, on the west side where you protect devourer nests from thieves, all of the queens were dead and didn’t respawn. (This made gathering eggs easier, but I was confused for a while when I couldn’t feed the queens, not realizing they were all dead.)
Finally, I’m not sure if this was a bug or an enrage timer of some sort…but I fought the fire elemental shaman at the north end of the map with 3-4 other players. We cleared out his Ember guards, got him down to less than 5% health, then he suddenly jumped back into the middle and respawned all the Embers at once, completely wiping us out in seconds. If that wasn’t a glitch, that’s pretty darn harsh.
