Rather than doing what they did, they probably should have made the expansion $30 and the original game $20. As for the FTP accounts, maybe they should have put a level cap on that rather than have an entire class of player that can get to 80 and will probably never buy the game. But I don’t have the data on this, I’m not sure what the buy in rate is for FTP, my impression is they go from one FTP game to the next.

All that said, GW2 is still an incredible value and anyway you look at it ArenaNet is offering alot of game for very little price.

It’s okay, I just wish they would have made the tassels much bigger. Not really.

So someone mentioned this the other day about content updates and support and hoping someone can clarify. So basically all the free content updates that GW2 has been receiving for the past three years is going away and shifting to HoT.

Is this accurate? Will base GW2 players still get free content updates? Or do we know this yet?

Well, personally I only had bad experiences with games that went f2p or had f2p servers. I can’t think of one game that has a nice f2p community. Now the veteran players are forced to mix with the f2p players (sorry for all those nice f2p newcomers, I really don’t want to insult you). That’s why I am worried about this move from Anet.

That is true. The only other free-to-play game I had played was LotRO, and the community there still managed to be mature regardless, even in the starting areas, so I don’t have much experience with bad f2p models.

I guess it is good that free accounts won’t be able to use the map chat here.

Like the original poster, all my experiences with F2P have been bad. I was really starting enjoy GW2 and now it has that F2P taint. I’m not sure how this will affect the game long term, but one thing is for sure, I’m sure as heck not buying HoT now until we see how this all sorts out. Don’t want to be on sinking ship at this point. I’ll go find another MMO.

Well if it makes some of you veterans feel better, I purchased the game recently and now it just went F2P! So if its any consolation, people like me got screwed more. I should have just held out a few more months for HoT.

I think one of the problems is that they – at least subjectively – continue to devalue the core game for players who do not want to buy the expansion (yet).
I’m not saying that devaluation is real but I can certainly see why people would perceive it as such.
Basically: if you don’t own HoT you are kind of 2nd class from now on (no new content, class development probably geard towards elite specializations etc.)

So any chance this going FTP as well say in the next 12-24 months? I came to GW2 late and still have a lot of content to explore, so I’m not really seeing the need to purchase this now.
