I can understand where the OP is going with this. There is probably too much burst in the game, or base health pools aren’t large enough. On the other hand some builds are way too tanky, things seem a bit out of wack right now.
What’s there to understand about heartseeker? You press 2, it costs initiative, and it auto-tracks to the target, even a keyboard turner could get it to work. Not saying it’s op, but there’s not a whole lot to understand about it.
I main an elementalist, and I’ve played 100+ games as a mesmer; I’ve probably played more games as mesmer than most of the bad players saying they are fine. Mesmer is so much easier to play with, and way less stress. I win 2v1s all the time on the mesmer, which is really hard on the elementalist.
1. It’s not easy to kill mesmer illusions, I take the signet that increases their health. Once you kill an illusion, a good mesmer has already pulled out another one.
2. If you learn to switch weapons quickly you’ll have a constant stream of phantasams. I don’t even bother pulling out clones after the first one because they will dequeue my phantasams.
3. Mesmer has a butt load of control. On the spec I run I have two stuns, a blind, and a daze all on short cooldowns.
4. Mesmers are very tanky with blurred frenzy, stealth, and high regeneration uptime.
5. If I pull out moa it feels like cheating.
The only problem with mesmer I’ve found is that I get too brazen, because it’s so strong, I get myself into situations I probably shouldn’t be in.

Overall I agree, Rangers are a kitten to deal with. Especially when you are specced pretty soft. I think if you go Toughness primarily you should be able to last VS rangers. Swap Arcane utility for Signet of Earth and either Lightning Flash or Cleansing Fire.
Haven’t thought of using lightning flash as a positional aid, worth some experimentation. I have the arcane trait in my build that causes arcane spells to do something special based on your attunement. For example, in air arcane blast blinds, in fire it causes burning. This is very helpful for getting burning up on someone quick so fire grab does extra damage, among other things. So, I’m not sure about dropping arcane blast.
I’m so raging sick of using every tool at my disposal to get killed by some lamer who did nothing but auto-shot crossfire attack me the whole fight.
A list of annoying things that go can wrong.
1. Ranger kites in circle dodging phoenix and dragons tooth.
2. Fire grab always fricken missses.
3. Arcane wave hard as heck to land on kiter.
4. Earth knockdown requires you to stand still, they just kite away.
5. Zephyrs quickness – boy i wish I could pop quickness and melt someone with lightning auto-attack.
6. After they’re downed some pets can cause you a crap load of trouble.
The only build I’ve found that can handle rangers is scepter/focus signet-aura condition build. Basically you create an aura-build that uses fire signet as an extra dot. Open with gale switch to earth spam auto-attack pop magnetic aura and watch him kill himself, funniest darn thing in the world when they pop quickness into your magnetic aura + fire aura. I guess you counter auto-attack spam with auto-attack spam.
The question is, has anyone found an effective strat against rangers with the standard arcane sceptre/dagger build?
I’ve noticed something kind of interesting with most of the squishy thief builds. You can’t play like you would a mage in WoW, where you make room run away and try to set up your shatter combos. Instead just go full on offense.
rtl -> updraft -> dt -> phoenix -> circle of fire -> arcane blast -> fire grab -> arcane wave.
Once this combo is over, if he’s still alive because you kitten it up. Switch to earth and
blind with earth 3 -> earth 4 knockdown, earth 2 armor
switch to water throw some heals down and put on the frost aura
switch to air and blind him, hit him with air 2 once
switch back to fire and phoenix circle of fire where he’s most likely in stealth right now.
This is kinda how fight goes, use your blinds and knockdowns in earth and air to get you room to heal until phoenix and circle of fire are off cd. Use the arcane build with valkrie amulet as stated above.
Now if they have a bunch of toughness and run death blossom build things start to get hairy, just remember switching to water will clear some conditions.

It’s comical how people will go to any lengths to defend their profession. Look people, imbalances exist, it’s just a part of playing an MMO. Every MMO on the market has had to deal with the issue, and balancing always comes in one form or another. If there are people that honestly think GW2 is balanced two weeks after release, I have some land to sell you in Florida.
What’s really rich are all these mesmers claiming their class takes so much skill. Isn’t that always the case though; it’s never the profession, but their skill that allows them to have so much success. It’s like the guy driving a Ferrari who thinks it was his skill behind the wheel that allowed him to dust a Prius.
Unfortunately for these people, in GW2, we can all quickly roll another class to test it out, so their exclusive little club isn’t so exclusive.
I’ve put quite a few hours into playing all the professions except necro and guardian. From my experience, mesmer is a walk in the park; they’re not nearly as high skill as you people would like to think. Elementalist and engineer are both much harder to become proficient at. Mesmer is OP, it’s not even something that should be up for debate for anyone with an objective perspective.
Thief on the other hand is a tougher nut to crack. Yes, I’ve been taken from 17k health down to almost nothing before their animation even appears on the screen, this is obviously broken. However, when playing a thief, I’ll barely scratch a guardian and he will turn around and one shot me. So somehow their damage needs to be toned down on low armor classes, while being given more passive survivability, or something to that effect.
Thiefs Guild is OP though, this is like an “I Win” button without LOS. I can’t count how many times I’ve gotten a thief down to ~25% health and he stealths, pulls out his pets, and I watch my health melt because i just blew all my cds on thief. I would like to see this ability adjusted also.
