You spelled the name of the character Nanni Dawnsnkull, but you’re typing Nanni Dawnskull in that pic. That may be your problem.

guild wars 2 vs. the world of mmo's

Where I said that? I played bazillions of games, tons of genres, a lot of years… and never, NEVER see the word “endgame” in any of them. Only here, with complainers with nothing usefull to say, only “weee.. in wow you have that.. you have this.. The endgame there is fun! i QUIT! etc”.

We don’t need that people

I don’t know the time or even game of origin, but I do know that the term “endgame” was being used by Everquest players pre-DAoC launch. I agree that it’s an overused term and a tired concept, and we really don’t need it hashed out here yet again.

It’s like a certain segment of the playerbase read the game features, added “and instanced raids” in their imaginations, and are surprised that their preferred max-level content didn’t spring forth from their heads like Minerva and jump into the game.

Quay - Its pronouced "Key"......

When dealing with something as wide-reaching as acceptable pronunciation, it’s wise to get at least a second opinion. Here’s Merriam-Webster’s take:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/quay – note that the third accepted pronunciation is indeed “Qu-way” as the OP writes it, and the rhyming words down the page support that pronunciation as well

Now I’ve no idea what country or region their golem pronunciation came from (its Hebrew roots?), but I just tell myself that’s how the Asura pronounce it and go on about my day.

Edit: Showed pronunciation properly in preview, but didn’t show the IPA coding properly on the board itself. Changed to reduce confusion.

The thoughts of a first time MMO-er

What you’re seeing is in large part due to some of ANet’s design philosophies (and the people who are attracted by those) and the “everyone in the area can work together on the same goal without being literally grouped” reward system. It isn’t bad, since those decisions were made to remove a lot of petty aggravation compared to other games, but it is indeed different from the industry standard on MMO social expectations.

As for simple chit-chat, joining a guild and chatting in the map channel are excellent ways to socialize while running around solo. Make sure that you have your map channel set to display in whichever chat tab you normally have open, and to chat there rather than the immediate area, type /m or change it by clicking the word to the left of your chat output box. I have yet to find a zone where the map chat isn’t hopping.

For grouping, you’ve already gotten some excellent advice, but a few things to add: first, whatever else you do, do not simply invite people without whispering to them and getting a “yes” back. Even if you get an acceptance, that person might have different expectations of where to go and what to do with the group. At worst, you’ll end up on people’s block lists because they find that behavior extremely rude or irritating.

Secondly, have an actual plan for what you want to do with your group, and include it in your /map or /whisper advertising if at all possible. Thanks again to the options that we have to work together while still going our own ways without fuss afterwards, most people only form pugs (pick-up groups, meaning groups that are not primarily guild members or personal friends) for dungeons and PvP. If you want to grab people to do other things, you need to get that in up front. Something like “forming group to do all of the skill points on the map and participate in any other events we come across” may net you responses by people who weren’t necessarily looking to group, but will join since you’re doing what they planned to do that day anyhow. In addition, people will feel more confident joining a group with a leader who has a plan, no matter what that plan is. Most MMO veterans have experienced at least one group that sucked up their playtime faffing on about what to do, and would rather not do so again.

Finally, respect a player’s decision if they choose not to group with you. You seem like an articulate, friendly, and polite person, so I doubt this advice is really necessary for you, but just for the record: whining some variation of “but why?” at someone is a good way to end up blocked, not grouped. Something along the lines of “thank you anyway, have a pleasant evening,” on the other hand, gets you remembered as that nice person I might like to group with when the baby isn’t colicky, or whatever the reason was.

Exclamation mark (or any common punctuation symbol) is not the best kind of symbol to add.

That wasn’t really the point of my post, but thank you for adding this to the overall input. I was simply considering symbol types that might be easily associated with a particular word in a four-word password, and therefore as easily remembered as the other words themselves. I doubt it can hurt to add these types of symbols, even if one shouldn’t count on them as a first line of defense. My main point, which we seem to be in agreement upon, is that obsolete, user-created, or “slang” terminology may slide past a hacking program that is scanning the English dictionary, while remaining far more easily-memorized by an individual user than the random collection of numbers, letters, and symbols that most sites recommend as a “strong” password.

Why give necros a melee weapon?

Well yes, you will play against people that have no idea what they are doing, but any solid player will stun you immediately when you enter DS.

The initial post did not specify a PvP setup. PvE does exist, as a primary playstyle for many players even. Even if the OP’s intention was a PvP critique, “it exists for PvE players” is a valid response to the question.

Password change system broken-wife locked out now

I decided to give the password change a shot since I wouldn’t be too bothered right now if it took a while to get back in to my account (other things to do for the next few days). I waited a bit and attempted to log into my account twice with the new password and was rejected. I then attempted to log in with my old password and was rejected. I yet again attempted to log in with my new password and it was accepted.

Is it possible that there has simply been lag in the password updating? I notice that your initial report and the updated report are 12 minutes apart.

The support system has (had?) its own NCSoft log-in which is not necessarily the same as your GW2 log-in. She may need to register for that separately, though that might now be different from the beta situation. I can’t help but agree that this is a less than optimal support situation. We should be able to input our account information and gain support without a confusing re-registry or the seeking out of a long forgotten NCSoft registry (in my case, from City of Heroes, back in freaking 2005!!!)

Having played a necro that has out-tanked and outlasted both guardians and warriors in pugs and guild groups, I’m honestly at a loss as to why some people are finding necros squishy. (Low damage, absolutely; squishy, what?) I use axe/dagger and dagger/dagger with a staff in my inventory for specific situations.

Are you using your life drains, especially those in the trait lines, to full effectiveness? Might extra points in the Death Shroud trait help you? Have you considered using a minon-master or a condition-master setup, whichever you don’t currently use? Both are effective, but if one suits your personal playstyle better, that could make all the difference.

Also, and I hope this is obvious, but it needs to be said for some people: are your weapons and armor upgraded to near your level? Your gold gear might have been stellar fifteen levels ago, but even white gear might be better now.

Fighting botters with their own weapon

So for 30min/day I could just watch my character do the fighting and re;lax in the same time.

So uh, not to be argumentative or judgemental here, especially since I’m never going to be one arguing for making the game superhardomg!, but – why aren’t you watching one of the fine films or television shows available on or offline or reading one of the equally fine books produced on or offline, rather than trying to spend your time watching a game play itself for you? Games are a genre that inherently requires substantial user activity, while the others do not. They are all (usually) relaxing, enjoyable leisure activities, but produced for audiences that wish to do different things with that leisure time. Trying to get one of them made for a different audience seems counterproductive at best.

I’m not going to address security of English words vs symbols – I don’t have the programming savvy to feel comfortable doing so. However, I am a linguist and can point out that “four words that appear in an English dictionary” and “four words that a native English speaker feels comfortable using and remembering” are NOT the same thing. Some non-dictionary terms even come with symbols that are easy to remember as “attachments.” Consider a password such as (apologies for some borrowing) batterycorrectbangstaple – 4 words that can theoretically be found in an English dictionary – turned into batteryecorrectbiff!staple. The password is just as easy for a certain English speaker (in this case, probably a comics reader) to remember, but outside of the capacity of a simple dictionary attack.

Whether that is actually safer than four regular dictionary words, I will have to bow to others’ knowledge of the situation.
