Arenanet please it is so frustrating to have the map in the last place your eyes look. I really want to have the map on the lower left side!

Hey guys, recently picked up the Guild Wars 2 again. I have been streaming on http://www.twitch.tv/inaliz almost every day at 3pm est. Trying to improve my Mesmer game play. Now on the non stronghold PvP arena section of the game. We have had the same boring game modes and maps for years. Why not just add more game types to unranked or experimental mode? The game has so much potential for awesomeness in the arena realm! Why not have a purely underwater map? Why not have straight up team deathmatch maps? You could add 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 arenas etc. One game mode whihc I think would be awesome would be a 1v1 3 man team tag team type. Where the person in the fight could hit a key and summon in the next person in your group like some fighter games! Why not have a CTF game? Underwater CTF!? We don;t need all these maps and game types to be PERFECT, put them in unranked or casual PvP modes while you tweak and balance.

I just really think with the awesome class system and variations that some additional complexity and variation of PvP arena game modes would go a LONG way. Making the game a lot more popular amongst the arena pvp crowd and give it legitimacy in the competitive arena world of gaming.

Well that’s my feedback from my vast experience in the PvP arena world and game design. Hoping some eyes at A net see this and grab some ideas. Also I would love to work on this type of thing if you are looking for anyone to hire, email me if you want. I have a lot of input for WvW and other forms of PvP as well.

I have played pretty much every PvP battle arena type game in the past 14 years. DotA type games especially which have become the most popular arena based PvP format. I have over 15,000 games of arena based experience to reflect on, here is my feedback on stronghold and…well the state of GW2 sPvP arena in general. Also how it could be vastly improved and taken more seriously.

When stronghold was announced I was very excited for a new game mode. Seeing that we have had the same bland PvP arena modes and maps for years. Hoping that they would introduce a longer, more complex game mode with a nice map and better mechanics. When I had access to the first stronghold public beta I eagerly hopped into a game! Well, I was soon extremely disappointed to say the least. The map mchanics seem very dumbed down compared to every other modern PvP arena type game as well as other mmorpg arenas. Simply summoning 2 types of bland npcs one that’s actually called a “Door Breaker”, I mean come on guys. The game mechanics simply include summoning these npcs to break two doors and kill a lord with some guards.

There are so many more complex and fun arena types dating all the way back to the pre 2000 arenas to learn from. Aeon of Strife, Dota, LoL, SC and WC3 custom map arenas, WoW arena types, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, many FPS…The list goes on and on. The genre has so many mechanics out there to build upon if you can’t think of anything fun and complex originally. But then I had to think, what was I expecting? Looking at all the previous SPvP maps and game types they are very archaic and bland in design. How can a game with such brilliant class design and variation hire people that seem to have no or limited experience in the arena PvP format? At least for me, having played thousands of PvP arena matches in so many different games I can’t see where the designers have much experience in the realm. I’m not trying to be mean, just pointing out glaring issues here.

I was hoping stronghold would bring in 15-30+ minute epic matches similar to DotA type games. What we got seems like something created by a novice in the realm of arenas. Once again I’m not trying to come off as a critical buttehead. It’s due to the years I have played arena in this game and my frustration in the process. There are a lot of the same problems that we see in the previous game modes. Lot’s of unused space on the maps. Old and redundant mechanics like capping points while sitting still. Rewarding players for running off bored to a point or bunkering on them solo.

Why not grab from what we know and what have become the most popular arenas in the world? Here are some ideas to use, but I have little faith my feedback will be heard or implemented.

First off make the map bigger and create 3 lanes! Then you get a format and meta of who goes where with what builds. Don’t make the npcs summonable using supply. Just have packs of npcs spawning from the lanes at intervals like DotA. Use the supply or points/gold from npcs and player kills to upgrade your units or defenses! Every npc kill or player kill awards that player with currency that they can use to better their forces and defense. At least have a more complex system involved in the npcs and defense system. Increase the AI in the npcs! Add defense upgrade points along the lanes. For instance, create towers on each of the lanes that can be placed or upgraded using gained currencies. Make it so that if a team takes down a defense tower then it spawns a hero with decent AI that fights with your npc waves. Don’t have it so the lord kill ends the game. Have the lord be a defender of a tree of life or a structure like the ancients in dota. For every tower or door taken down increase the interval of npc spawns or their power. If you take down the enemies doors/towers/structures upgrade their lord with better ai or powers. Allow players to spend currency from player kills or npc/door/tower kills on things like better units, reinforced doors/bases or better lord/guard power. If a team takes down a tower or defense structure allow them to purchase a teleporter from their base to the structure. Those are just some ideas to grab from. There are so many ideas and mechanics in the PvP arena world to get inspiration from.
