That is seriously messed up. There should be rules to prevent this from happening. Like many others said, only the majority of the team should make roster decisions. Hopefully Anet will review this as a special case since is a pvp challenger team- even though they said they wouldn’t be involved in guild affairs

An Air aftercast AoE does count so if you quickly change attunements (to Fire, Water, or Earth) after overloading, the Air AoE can crit and refresh your air attunement. This will allow for almost instantaneous switch back to Air. However, your crit chance does have to be fairly high to achieve this consistently.
