Let me tell you the best kept little secret about deselecting targets, that noone seems to know about.

Under “Control options” -> “Targeting”, there’s an option named “Lock Autotarget”.

Bind a key to that one (I use my Alt key) and voila – there you have your deselect target key.

By far the best and fastest method to deselect a target.
