#1. Left and right mouse button utility options. Will probably have to implement camera changes for this.
#2. Minor UI customization options.
#3. Agree with Pip2041 above: “MORE VIABLE BUILDS THAN DPS ONLY.”
#4. More challenging PVE.
#5. Make auto-attacking more special/smoother attack animations.

Note to Anet: I just came back from a long break and I want to thank you for keeping this game in good shape, really appreciate it.

In my opinion GW2 is turning into a C rated platformer

Here’s my opinion on the quality of the game. The camera needs work, the targetting needs work, the abilities are not rewarding, and everything feels cramped in; small, thin, and without depth, as if I was looking at a piece of paper and not a 3D animation . I feel like they used their “paintbrush” art-style to get away with this. I pre-purchased the game, but on the first beta, I knew I had made a mistake. I did try playing it for a little bit (got one character to 80), even bough a copy for my brother, but he feels the same way. It’s just not a smooth game, like say WoW. Every time I log in and try to play, the way the character move (my biggest issue with the game) makes me close the game. Honestly, I wish I could get a refund, lol.

Do you think GW2 got "action combat" right?

Having played DC Universe, GW2 and TERA, I found I prefer DCUOs and GW2’s more agile combat system, especially for playing caster classes. The hybrid targeting system that sits half-way between lock-on and crosshair works really nice for this combat pace. For GW2, a slightly better camera position/angle wouldn’t hurt though.

I have played TERA, DCUO, RIFT, SMITE, WOW, and some RPGS, and I have to say that GW2 is the only game where I find the camera, characters, movement, combat, and abilities less satisfying and more awkward. Again…probably because of the hybrid factor.

If I could dodge 3 times instead of 2, it would feel like an entirely different game to me. For some reason the 2 time limit feels… clunky compared to other action MMO type games.

Also, if we could switch between tab targetting and crosshairs I would probably never put the game down ever again.

Switching from tab targetting to crosshairs would eliminate a lot of camera issues, that’s the point I was trying to make. I understand why gw2 would stay a tab-targetting game, which I don’t mind at all, just wish it was smoother.

It’s a loaded question. The only real answer to it is “no” since things are very rarely done right the first time. It takes practice, iteration, and tweaking to get things just right. Like a timeless cooking recipe your grandmother might know.

The real question is; “Have they created a combat system that works well, and leaves room for improvement?”. I say yes.

Ya, I undestand it’s almost an unfair question. I actually like this game, but I’m not enjoying it. Just want to hear people’s take on things. Thank you!

Hello, and thanks for reading. GW2 is a very innovated game. The goal was to take the best features of multi-player games and out there, and put them into one game. The final product to be feels like a combination of a standard mmo, some rpg essence, and moba abilities and pvp map features. With all these genres in one game, things can get cazy. For example, having to hold your right-mouse button to move your camera, while having to “aim” abilities gets a bit awkward for me. One way to solve this is to lock the camera so it moves with your character like most rpgs or have some kind of crosshair, but I think some people want the standard mmo-controls (tab-targetting). GW2 decides to keep the option to left-click or tab to your next target, again…while having to “aim” your abilities and control your camera, all the same time. IMO “true action-conbat” does not need such “lock-in” mechanism; we should always be trying to aim our abilities not lock-in to our targets: However, I do realize this is a hybrid game and that may be the reason why some people play it. I’ve been recently into this new 3rd-person moba game called “SMITE”, and I love how they managed their combat. I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s almost what I was expecting from gw2 in the first place…just faster and more intense. The characters in, the visual abilities, combo fields-the combat is really smooth and enjoyable in SMITE. They only have 4 abilities, yet they are more rewarding to use, compared to the abilities in gw2. Now, mobas don’t satisfy every need, as there are no dungeons/raid or exploration, so I do jump on to gw2 for that. But then the awkard camera, characters, jumping, aiming, and animations shy me away again. Are you guys satisfied with Anet’s take on this hybrid mmo/rpg/moba game with “action-combat”? Is there room for more innovation or is everything pretty much done?

This may be old news, but there is a mod out there to modify your game to that of rpg with a crosshair that I’m currently using. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! ANET CAN’T OFFICIALLY APPROVE 3RD PARTY MODS BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE POBLEMS WITH THE GAME! READ THEIR POLICY ON 3RD PARTY MODS IF YOU’RE WORRIED. Basically same story as when using SWEETFX to enhance your game. As long as it doesn’t help you cheat you should be fine, BUT USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Anyway the mod takes like 2 min. to set-up:

GW2 feels like a F2P game (my opinion)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

juanitobgoode.1079

For me GW2 is missing quality…the game just feels cheap. I’m talking abou the actual physics of the game. The characters look cheap, the animations are meh and clunky, jumping is awkward ( also we can’t cast while jumping), animations restrict how fast our abilities go off. And this is stuff that can’t really be patched, it’s pretty much set in stone. Right now some pvp and playing with my little brother is what motivates me to logg in once in a while. The bottom line is that the game gets boring very quicky imo. Part of this has to do with GW2 trying to be a hybrid between a classical mmo, action-style, tab targetting, moba game. I have to give them props for being the first game to attempt this (also why I supported them), but the quality just isn’t there. Hopefully future game will learn to do this better. I used to logg in to WoW more than this game and I didn’t think WoW was that great, however it had decent quality/movement/controls.

A Minimalist UI Setting?

My only dislikes about the UI so far are the target frame being in the middle of the screen blocking my view, and the ridiculous “condition hearts”: they are so big and don’t look good, like they don’t belong in the game. I honestly thought the hearts were just place holders when I saw them in beta and didn’t think they would manke it into the actual release…if they want us to look at the screen and not the UI, then stop blocking it! It’s hard enough to target things in this game as it is.

Post your FPS & System spec here.

My expirience isn’t horrible, but I lagg a lot when I first enter the game or whenever I tab out and back in (I have to wait 7-15 sec. or so for it to stop). I also get random lagg once in a in a while, it’s not really predictable…it’s extremely annoying (like on a story-mode mission I was getting like 10 fps!). This game has been lagg issues, one after another- since launch. This is the only game I have troubel running smoothly on high settings…

My lack of playing time is due to the art-syle, weird movement, and how the game feels overall; it’s just not working for me. This might be more of a personal preference thing. I tried discussing it here:

the character weapon swing animations are also awkward for moving charactres. it looks like the body is detached from your body is you run while swininging a 1h sword, for example.

Ya. I pre-purchased the game, had a 3-day start, and still don’t have an 80. I gave up on my warrior because the animations were not very enjoyable. My Ele.‘s are a little better, but I can’t get over how small and flat everything feels in the game. I recently started playing DC Universe online, and the characters feel better (although the movement takes some time to get used to). The characters look bigger/solid (even when zoomed out) and the world looks very open and unrestricted.

I guess it’s a matter of option. I opened this thread to express my opnion on the art-style, but it doesn’t mean it’s “wrong”. What do you guys think?

Juanito, I think to illustrate this to people who has a hard time understanding, you need to post 2 pictures. 1 picture of GW2 fully zoomed out and another picture of other MMO (DC Universe or whatever), fully zoomed out. A side-by side comparison is really needed here.

I totally understand what you’re talking about, but it helps if others see it.

Thanks.

The Charr were the most interesting of races, so I chose them. Didnt feel floaty. The camera is horrible near walls for jumping puzzles.

The biggest problem with the combat is the lack of instant attack spells. It makes things feel delayed. That 3/4 second to cast isq a real downer.

Totally agree with you on this.. I don’t like how alot of the abilities have this loading time to it. I think the game would be more fun if they removed all of the loading time on those abilities that have it. One example is the warriors number 5 ability with a rifle which is suppose to be a knockback move, I cant understand why something like that needs to load up? Fast instant moves make a game more fun in my opinion.. when you press the button the ability should deliver on the spot. Although Im used to the way things are I do recognize that it doesn’t feel as good as it should.

Its one of those things that is hard to get over coming from other games. WOW is big on interrupts, seeing an animation, clicking an instant spell to interrupt another one with a spell cast. GW2 is like this as well, but the whole system is always 1 step behind. By the time I react, due to cast times, I’m too late sometimes and it bugs me, because I shouldn’t be too late. I’m not too late in other games. Why here? EVERYTHING is delayed, except dodging. The animation happens quick even if you still get hit even though it appears that the mob whiffed.

Its one of those minor yet important things, love it or hate it, that makes WOW what it is, and is VERY difficult to adjust to in GW2. I don’t want to adjust. All these 3/4 cast times should be instant. Heals especially bug the frack out of me. I’m watching my health bar drop, I pop a heal and I’m waiting for the cast time and general lag to catch up, where I rarely if ever noticed any of this in WOW. Sure, you can’t compare…but I have to. It would be like playing an FPS and there being a delay every time you shoot and someone just says, “Well, that’s how the game plays….”. To that I say, that’s NOT how it should play. Other games don’t have a delay when I shoot. It should be instant, because that’s what makes an action game visceral. Considering GW2 is big on movement & positioning, it doesn’t make sense how skills aren’t instant too. It just makes everything feel like there’s lag when there isn’t.

Nicely said, thank you for posting!

Yes especially my human it feels like there’s no gravity, there’s no ‘oomph’ in my footsteps. I want to be stomping more. Perhaps this is because I just came from a single player game like RE6, or Uncharted, where the characters feels solid and heavy.

Here’s it feels floating and actually, it makes the game cheap in my opinion.

That’s exactly the point I’m trying to make. The game feels cheap. I’m trying to figure out if this the result of working within a budget, time, and skill or if it’s truly an artistic choice. Because if it’s all an artistic view, I guess it’s not working for me. I almost feel like we’re not suppose talk about it because it may seem disrespectful. However, I would not be posting this if I didn’t care about or see the pontential of the game.

Thank you for your amazing answers so far.

@Satans Chosen.1024
“The problem may be the active nature of GW2’s combat. It leads to the illusion of an action game, but GW2 is certainly no Assassin’s Creed 3 as far as physics and graphics.”
Basically this is how I feel, as if I’m being tricked and it doesn’t feel natural, my eyes don’t like it. This the funnest mmo I’ve played so far, but I can only play it 30 min. to an hour before my eyes are bored or tired. I actually pre-purchased this game and I thought I was going to be playing it a lot and hurry to 80 and do dungeons and stuff, but I can’t get myself to play that much, I just can’t. I did reach level 23 spvp though.

@camoflaugz.5031
“I wanted to change my human to a norn so I can look a little more thicker but it doesn’t seem like that option is in the works atm or probably never will be. I think what makes my character feel even smaller is that when Im running he is kinda hunched forward instead of being straight. As far as the spells are concerned, I was orginally interested in the necro but I just couldnt get into it, the spells look a little plain, like a black shadow that comes out or sometimes I don’t really even notice the spells at all with a necro so I just gave up on that profession and deleted the character."
I understand what you’re saying, I gave up on a necro as well.

@Raolin Soulherder.3195
“it’s only an illusion. to prevent one race from having an advantage over another, Anet gives them all the same speed”
Good answer, that makes sense. Since we have the ability to modify height and weight in this game, things can get a bit tricky for the developers.

Other Thoughts:
The landscapes are a 10/10 for me. The main reason I bought the game was to explore, but I become discouraged when I’m not able to enjoy the combat the same way I’m able to enjoy the exploration.
Game was worth my $60, but that’s not the same as having enjoyed it fully.

Conclusion:
Is it the art-style that I’m struggling to get used to? Perhaps this is why everything feels flat and tiny compared to other mmos.
I have found that spells placed on the ground look and work better in this game, such as that of the guardian. Is GW2 more of that type of game?
I don’t want to offend Anet by saying you need to “fix” some of these issues, when when it may simply be the art-style I’m not used to.

Q: Do you guys think these are actual issues that need to be improved, or it’s simply the style of the game?

I’m having difficulty describing my expirience and the physics in this game, but I will try. Hopefully I’m not the only one that feels this way. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
1. Basically, when ever I logg onto GW2, my characters feel very floaty, or detached form the ground, specially when strafing. This also leads to the walking/running and turning feeling forced and slugish.
2.Characters look and feel like 2D notebook drawing cut-outs, rather than 3D avatars. They look amazing when they are stading still or zoomed in, but once in motion or in combat, the strange look and feeling arises.
3. The charaters in the game look rather tiny and flat compared to other mmos, I can’t explained it. In games like WoW, RaiderZ, and Rift, the characters look and feel a more meaty, solid, overall bigger, and more grounded.
4. The camera makes me feel restricted for some reason. E.g., the open world in WoW feels bigger when I’m questing.
5. Spells don’t feel special, animations look weak and are not fulfilling. E.g., I hate my elemental’s #1 skill on my staff, and hunter arrows look like pencil marks on a notebook paper. I recently discovered the game “Dragon Age II” and “DC Universe”, and the animations look more satisfying (my opinion).
6. The jumping is awarkd (on my male-human specially).

Agreed, too many particle effects. I don’t like it when I can’t see the champion I’m fighting; it makes harder to see his animation and react properly to it, which is how the game was to be played. On a side note: Please do something about the “condition” hearts. They don’t blend-in well with the art and look so out of place, would appreciatte a new icon for that and a bit smaller. Keep up the good work A-net.

Elementalists are very underpowered

in Elementalist

Posted by: juanitobgoode.1079

juanitobgoode.1079

“Lowest defense and low DPS: Elementalists are forced to combo in order to output as much damage as another profession (as a result of them having 20 skills available via attunement swapping); the time it takes to swap attunements, execute skills, and wait for their animations results in attack patterns that necessarily take longer than other professions just to equal their damage output hence Elementalists’ low DPS.”

This. And don’t forget we pretty much have to be in meele range…

There is something missing about the elementalist class that I can’t put my finger on. Here are some of my views:

1. I don’t like the fact that we are forced to do these “combos” to execute damage. It feels like a “one-shoot macro” from WoW. I know that an elementalist is meant to change between attunements, but the motivation should be only because we want to. These “combos” are forcing us to.

2. Our #1 skills are so boring (mostly for staff). For me there is nothing funner than sneakly casting a fireball from a far and hitting my opponnent for maxium damage. I hate these weak 1/2-sec. cast-fireballs, that don’t seem to make a difference and do not feel special at all (specially if you have auto-cast enabled)…it looks like I’m playing volleyball while I’m moving. I know this game promotes movement, but I also think there’s such a thing as too much movement or too fast-paced; I love when I get the cast off on my warrior’s rifle for F1. I though hard-casting was suppose to be implemented into the game where the longer you hold the cast, the more damage you do (that’s what I heard from some of the demos). The constant movement is cool, but sometimes I wish I could just cast my long fireball…I’ll move when someone shoots an arrow at me or something. This one is a complicated one for me, and haven’t decided 100% how I feel about it yet.

3. The attunements don’t seem to make a difference (may be wrong on this). I thought you were suppose to have extra armor while attuned to earth, more healing while in water…etc, without having to trait into it. I think they tried this by giving you a buff for 10 sec. or something, which is kinda lame; the buff should remain.

4. The fact that everyone can do ranged damage puts us at a disadvantage because of low-armor. I know this game isn’t exactly based on kitting (I haven’t really seen it fuction too well), but this reminds me of mage vs hunter in wow, were the hunter gets to do meele dmg as range so you can’t avoid it, but this time all classes can do it…

5. Let us swap wep., just not in combat…we do it anyway. For example, if I’m running d/d, but there’s a large group of people I just go to my hero tab and change to my staff before getting into combat and then change back when I’m out of combat.

I may start a new threat expressing these concerns, or not…idk. I’mjust trying to improve a game I really like, never cared enough about other games to post something like this.

Support this 100%. As much as I love gw2, I prefer a more responsive feel like wow. Honestly, that’s what I was expecting. I’ve tried dozens of mmos and this is the first mmo-ever to feel this different (for example Rift feels great). I haven’t played the game much because of this reason and I really want to, but the the camera and overall movement makes the game nearly unplayable for me. My friends abandoned the game for the same reason. I don’t know anything about developing a game and perhaps there are good reasons behind this; so if these mechanic are set in stone and aren’t going to change, then I guess gw2 wasn’t the game for me afterall. Thank you for your time.
