I think there are only two way to solve the problem with the points.
First, the easy way. Reduce the amount needed to about 200 so you have the chance to get it through HOT Content, core maps and even faster in WvW, what you like.

But if anet hold on the 400 Points, they need to change something.
Make it possible to get all points solo, so no heavy champ or meta event gates. As it may be ok for now, but the time comes when the maps are empty except some farming spots and it would be extremly difficult to get the points. And maybe some changes to the masteries like change itzel 4 and 2 so you don´t have to grind up through “not intersting” things like acces to merchants to make your way through the jungle. And make all masteries “worldwide” so you can level your glider in dungeons and so on. And fasten up the WvW part a bit. Then it even favors the explorer type of players, but maybe don`t hurt the others so much.

The 400 HP are way to much.
It may be ok for the “open world explorers” which have map completion and like to explore the new maps.
But GW2 was never a only open world exploration game (ok, there might be signs for a change with the removal of skill points) and so there are many different players. So some of them only like Dungeons and PVP or such things an don´t have world completion.

And then after months after the start of pre-purchase phase, anet wrote in a little forum post, to try our new “elite” (sry there is nothing elite about this due to balancing) spec in the Content you like you have to play the open world exploration. And with the release it shows, hat you even have to “grind” masterys in the open world to be able to frm the points for your new spec.
So why should the people not be upset about this?
