I would love to see something similar to what Horizons/Istria has done concerning new lands/areas, and that is make it a world event that involves not just adventurers taking care of things but also crafters getting in on the action.
For instance, the next awesome new area to be revealed is just beyond those currently impassable mountain peaks. Adventurers are needed to assist the meager amount of NPC soldiers that guard the NPC workers who in turn are actually clearing the pass and creating the roads. But these workers can’t do there job without the relevant materials (both mundane and arcane) nor can they subsist solely on fresh (?) mountain air.
This covers most all aspects of a PC’s life:
1) Assisting the guards (random defending events)
2) Clearing the general area(s) “ahead” of the pass (static mobs or random attacking events)
3) Assisting the workers (High count raw material events covering all tiers to enable all levels of crafters to help out)
4) Feeding the NPCs (so the chefs don’t feel left out)
This would turn the “expansion” from an timed event (which can limit player involvement) to more of a community event. There are several more things that could be added here but this is the general idea.
