Had this happen to me a week ago. It was during the Shadow Behemoth event, suddenly the sound changed to this annoying tone as per the youtube video on page 1. While annoying, I rebooted and its been fine since. I had it happen once in beta I think as well. I have not had any issues other then those two times.
I re-watched the manifesto recently. They never say “no grinding” – they do say they give you choice. You can choose to grind out the needed stuff to get a Legendary. But you do not have to. Having one has no relevance on the actual game or your character. It does not make you more elite or less elite. It just gives you a very pretty shiny to call your own and to strut around with and say “look at me, I am special!”
The same applies to Ascended gear. Except its less “look at me” because nobody can see it. They do give you some nice stat bonuses. They do give you something you need if you choose (there is that word again) to partake in higher tier FOTM content. Again you can do FOTM with no ascended gear. But if you choose to grind it out and keep doing that same content again and again at higher difficulties…well you are choosing to do that. Nobody is forcing you. And at this point the only reason to keep grinding FOTM is to get gear to fight agony so you can grind out higher levels of FOTM. It just feeds itself, and that content is there for people who like that.
Everyone has different play styles and likes different kinds of content (Gasp! Say it ain’t so!!) That being said: I feel ArenaNet has done a spectacular job catering to as many different play styles as they can. Like grinding out content and working for a specific goal? Well there is Ascended and Legendary gear to get (and to a lesser extent exotics!) If that is not your cup of tea, then there is world completion, different achievements, dailies. monthlies, exploration, and tons upon tons of hidden little things to go find!
After 2 level 80s, both in full exotics (which was a bit of a grind, but I choose to do that) I find no need to grind out anything else. Yes I have seem FOTM, but I am not grinding to get to higher difficulty levels. Why? There is no need to. I have been there and seen that. I may change my mind and do higher level FOTM, which is exciting because that is my choice to do so. I don’t have too. I have seen 68% of what the world has to offer (world completion.) And even then, if I get to 100% I know there is so many hidden things…
That all aside. What I enjoy most is adventuring with my friends (some lower level then me) and finding new things and places I never seen before. I recently stumbled on some events that I have never seen (apparently there are some rather rare events that only happen once certain conditions are met…which I find very awesome!) Building up our guild, helping folks with jumping puzzles… making fun of my Silvari companions with cheap salad jokes… Yeah.
Ascended and Legendary is absolutely not necessary. It just is not. Unless you are going for that specific content where it is. Down the line I seriously think Ascended will not be needed except, again, for the higher level FOTM stuff. That is it. The rest.. its all just for show.
The point is GW2 can be (and is) the game you want to make it. You say you don’t want to grind for gear. Then don’t. You do not have too.
I have been getting worse and worse lag since Flame and Frost first started. Before this I never really had any issues. Some nights is nearly unplayable. Right now, as I write this, I am playing with a new toon in the Wayfarer Foothills, and the lag is so bad I can pretty much not play. I try and harvest something and it takes nearly a minute to two minutes for the game to respond. I run and my “minion” lags somewhere about 200 yards behind me just sitting there. Then suddenly it shows I am getting hit by…something I cannot see then I die.
I have been playing since BWE 1, and never, ever, ever had this kind of lag. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game. I’ve made sure all my drivers are up to date, etc, etc. I do tech support for a living so I know how to take care of these things. I also have zero trouble with any other game at this point (nor do my roommates.) Coincidentally, my roommate who also Plays GW2 only has trouble with GW2. We sometimes play together and when we do we have the same lag at the same time. Sometimes, however, he will get kicked out of the game entirely. I however usually do not.

Here is my traceroute. Hopefully it helps ArenaNet figure this out… I’ve filed bug reports in game as well as via the support site.

I have to say that I agree with the OP. These forums are toxic. I rarely look at them anymore. When I do I usually am trying to find something specific.
Yes I have seen many developers destroy great games by not listening to their player/fan base (SWTOR comes to mind immediately! But there are others.) But I also have seen many great games completely destroyed by the “comments” (or should I say ranting feedback?) in their forums (you know what, SWTOR also comes to mind here.) I think the OP was asking for people to maybe step back, take a long look at what is REALLY important and maybe calm down a little.
I use to go to these forums to find answers to things I found in the game. Dig for information. Find clues to quests. Find solutions to bugs, etc. Honestly now its just a toxic soup of a negative feedback loop.
No ranting and raving will NOT get you results faster. I promise you that ArenaNet is listening and reading these forums. They are quite aware of what the issues are at this point. Just because every bullet point on your list (personal or otherwise) has not been addressed yet does not mean there is some conspiracy to ignore you, or to ruin the game, or to turn the game into something you dislike. AreanNet has NO vested interest in ruining their game. They are NOT sitting there in their offices in Washington trying to find ways to screw over their player base. I promise you they are not trying to go back on their word (manifesto) and ruin the universe for you or to commit “fraud.” They worked on this for 5 or more years, they do NOT want to ruin it for you or themselves.
What they are seemingly trying to do is find ways to make everyone happy. They are playing around with different ideas, finding the solutions that work for as many people as possible. You may not understand this, or you may actually forget, or who knows, – but just a few weeks ago there were huge amounts of people ASKING ArenaNet for more loot, more ways to get new and interesting gear. There were tons of people saying they hate the game because their is NO loot progression, that there is no grind, no way to to feel more “accomplished” by sporting ‘leet gear. People were saying that anything above exotic gear was too hard to get, that their should be a middle set, somewhere in between. So they introduce a new tier of armor..one that is totally optional, that you do not need to pursue, that does not actually impact the game in any real way other then give certain people something new to to achieve. That is it. It’s just something new to achieve (if you so choose.) It’s not a conspiracy to ruin your life. It is not a gear treadmill. Not even close.
I was disappointed with Lost Shores. Many people were/are. Their are parts I like, but parts I hate. The one time event was a wreck. BUT… I made my point to ArenaNet about that. They obviously understand it went horribly wrong. The surveys sent out, I think, are a way to cut through the din of negative feedback loops and get people’s opinions on an individual basis. When I got that request for feedback in email I answered with my opinions, positive and negative (and in some cases harshly.) There are parts I loved, parts that were horrible, and parts I want to see change or not happen ever again. But the point is they are listening. They WILL take all the feedback and do something. What that is may take time. They are under NO obligation to tell you what that is just yet. You are a customer, yes, but you are not privy to their plans and you do not need to be. Let it grow. Let’s see what they do with it…
It may not be what you want, wish, demand or hope. But it will be something. And if its not what you want, and you can’t live with it otherwise – then its time to look at what you DO want and GO there. Maybe one will suit your needs. If you feel you need to stay and keep ranting, then do so -but make it constructive. Talk like a human being, not a rage-bot hammering away on their keyboard, spouting conspiracies and bile. Obviously you will be sticking around because you care about the game right, even if your pissed off? But if your just sitting here, typing the same thing over and over again, repeating yourself in every post about how you hate this or that…well then what is your point? What is it your really trying to say?
Actually debating, and discussion is awesome. Good communities do that. If you don’t agree, then say something. But SAY it, don’t… well telling the original poster to kitten Yeah… not good. That is why these forums are toxic. THAT.
Flame away.
There I am, just minding my business, picking onions in a field, patiently trying to weasel my way around the Ettins nearby as to not attract any attention. Its a beautiful day out, the wind is gently rasping through the grass as the sun peaks through the clouds above. In the distance I can hear the call of a hawk flying above the treetops, and I swear I can almost smell the scent of rain in the air… But then it suddenly happens… I trip, I fall, and find myself in a cave! I didn’t see the hole in the earth, hidden by the tall grass. I find myself facing a dark expanse.. this cave is huge! How the heck did I not even know it was here? I pick onions in this field nearly every day? A huge grin crosses my face! I can hear the sound of rushing water ahead, and the soft murmers of…something… lurking in the darkness!
This is going to be an amazing adventure!
I feel like I find this kind of thing every day in GW2! There is so much to see, so much to do, so much to experience that this game just has sucked me in like very few have…ever! I love to just explore the world, to experience the events, to fall in love with the lore, to find all the hidden places, and secret things.
The thing is, I don’t want to do these things alone. Its one thing to face the Shatter the first time on your own. It’s another to face it with a group of stalwart companions and we all can collectively say “That was #&*#ing rad!”
I want to find a group or make a group of like minded individuals. There has to be more people out there then just me who want to take the time to appreciate an awesome view in the game, go on amazing adventures together, tackle the annoyingly hard dungeons (and actually LEARN tactics and strategies…as a group), craft gear for everyone, admire the hot armor or weapons your fellow adventurers may have, discuss the lore, share stories, and generally play the game in a supportive and fun atmosphere.
I guess you could say I want to be part of a group (or make a group) of like minded people who love Tyria and Guild Wars 2 and want to share that with other people as well! It’s just so much more fun when you are adventuring with a group of people who share the same interests and goals as you.
I am currently on Stormbluff Island, but willing to relocate. I am not much of a PvPer, but I am planning on trying it out. I am not a role-player, but admire folks who do. I don’t care about min-maxing, but understand its uses (and generally do it myself…) I am a bit of an alt-o-holic, but definitely have my main (Asura Engineers are THE best!) I am a pretty regular player, but I do work full time so I am not on all day (usually in the evenings, Pacific time.)
So if there are any guilds out there that sound similar.. I am game! Let me know! If anyone out there thinks this sounds familiar…well lets form our own guild! It could be a grand adventure!
Seems it must be a bug. I seem to remember in BWE 1 I got plenty of xp and gold medals from healing. Hopefully it’s something that will be addressed down the line…
It was my understanding that a player healing others, rezzing others, etc while taking part in DEs will get just as much “recognition” as a player just taking part in the combat. However in several events I have dne nothing but heal others, helped them when they were knocked down, dropped AOE heals etc…. And end up with a bronze medal each time. Is this by design? A bug? I’m hoping a bug, because sometimes the DEs are such Zerg vests I can’t even tell what’s going on, but I see downed players everywhere so I’ll try and just support as much as I can.. It seems the game really needs to support people “helpin” people a bit more…
Absolutely love the game thou!
