I wonder why it wasn’t 2 weeks like events used to be. I’m not really around on weekends so it’d be nice to have the full size events back so everyone can play.

Very much enjoyed the invasions though, some great mechanics in the events.

Didn’t like this event. Felt rushed, and I also felt “rushed” to do the event because of how limited the rewards were. I don’t like limited time things like this.

Stuff goes here.

I always was confused by the hunch-back phenomenon. It’s as if all the art designers in all these games have this bias that hunch = barbaric and beastly. Which I find laughable, just put them upstraight like any two-legged vertebraetes known to man and every imaginable universe and hunch them down when holding weapons / combat stance.

The charr aren’t fully bipedal, though – even though npc charr run on two legs, player charr clearly prefer running on all fours when possible. When your primary means of running is by four legs, hunched back makes sense – having the back curve backwards to stand up straight would put too much strain on the spine of such a heavy creature on transition to running.

Also, are you aware of bipedal dinosaurs?

Or birds for that matter. Or kangaroos. They don’t stand up vertically like humans.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

My only problem with Charr is there’s no option to make them stand upright like some proud noble GW1 Charr did. Would like to have some primal/tribal looking armor though for Charr and Sylvari.

Because the flame legion (hardly “noble”) were constantly craning their necks and making themselves very uncomfortable for aesthetic purposes. If you notice, the other three legions didn’t use that posture in GW1.

To give you a hint how that position would feel to a charr, stand up and stare straight at the ceiling for ten minutes. No looking anywhere else.

That gives you a taste.

I found some of the discounts exceptional. Certainly no disaster or any equivalent description from what I could see.

It was a 21 day sale and you probably found things that you wanted to buy on maybe 3 of those days. I’d wager that they could have condensed the GOOD items from this sale to a 4 or 5 day sale, maybe 7 day and we wouldn’t have noticed the difference.

It really grinds my gears that Anet promotes a massive sale for 21 days but it quickly becomes apparent that the only reason they made it a 21 day sale was for publicity and they kitten at least 7 of the days.

Not really sure what you and others were expecting. It was sales with a discount and returned items. 100% what was advertised and brought.

I expect Anet’s sales team to consider their ‘success’ here and realize that they could have done much better.

You don’t have to make things sales prices. Things that were available in the past 6-8 months can go on sale for 10-20% off or something and items that are consistently available are at 25-30% off. Items that haven’t been available for the past 2-3 years (and have changed functionality since then from simply townclothes which were pointless to now actual armor skins) can go on for regular prices OR EVEN INFLATED PRICES. Nobody who wants the bunny ears or hipster glasses would mind paying 500-800 gems, I think because the anniversary sale could be a sale in that it brings back things that we really really want.

The demand is there. It’s been 2 years since they were available. I don’t want skins that were available to me in the past 6 months and I passed on because in my opinion they were pretty ugly. They are still ugly. It won’t change my mind.

The 21 day long sale was worse than Amazon’s Prime Day. Anet what are you thinking? How about some old school skins back from the first few months of the game? Instead of all this stuff that’s been released within the last 6 months, I mean c’mon. Is that really too much to ask? I have no doubts that if you were to throw the Wide Rim Glasses back up, or the ANET Ball Cap or even the Bunny Ears… You’d probably find yourself with enough money to fund your entire expansion extravaganza.

Hello all,

Trying to address issues here so perhaps the devs can see each reason why this event has not been taken too well by the community. I’m sure a lot of them know about the kittenstorm on reddit at the moment due to this.

So to start, the event was advertised as a way to connect new and veteran players together. While this sort of works, a lot of the rewards are too expensive (rightly or wrongly) for a ‘new’ player to afford. This, imo, can be considered a good thing. New players should possible be able to afford the less prestigious items, but ones such as the potions should be left as being veteran only, due to how rare they actually are.
Not to mention the apparent drop rate of the blooms, in its current state, you’d have to farm for an unreasonable amount of time to be able to get them. This is also a problem, the event only lasting for 1 weekend locks a lot of players out of loot who possible work both days and only get a few hours in to farm.

This brings me to the next issue: event tagging. The way the buff works at the moment causes people to run to each event they can, tag each one and leave. There is 0 exp, loot or other rewards for getting gold. You can bronze each event and get the maximum possible reward from this event as a whole.

Scaling the events as much as it is at the moment makes me feel like having less people is better. I loved the incentive that GW2 has promoted since launch that you should enjoy seeing other players in the world, but with this world event seems to do the opposite. I’ve missed out on three or four events that have simply died too quickly, from the main plant being around 50% ish and just vanishing, then the leftover mobs being quickly deleted before I get to tag any. (this seems to be the shield plant event only)

Either the shield and catapult events need to take longer or the bomb event needs to be nerfed. Picking up the explosives and throwing them seems to take at least twice as long as the other two in my own experience. Whether this is new players taking the seeds and lobbing them in the wrong direction or poor scaling I don’t know. I make sure to get as many bombs as I can and throw them at the main plant.

No experience. There is little incentive at the moment for new players to do this. This could have been a nice way to give them a level boost. I know when starting an MMO any way to give me a level boost I will gladly take. It’s much more fun to run around with friends in a huge zerg, getting fast levels than it is to do hearts in my personal experience.

The main problems are the poor amount of blooms you receive for the time invested, the advantage you get for tagging an event and selfishly leaving (guilty as charged) and finally the long waiting times between each event. This is all without mentioning the bug on the rewards anyway. I played for about 4 hours straight, stubbornly trying to get blooms. I did not get a single one in the end and have not received them retroactively yet. I’m alright with this as long as the people who missed out on the rewards do receive them before the vendors leave.

Finally, I love how transparent and talkative the devs are about class changes and such. Roy in particular is very talkative on the Revenant forums for example. Could we get an explanation as to why this event was so poorly designed? I’m guessing the main developers are still hard at work to get the October release date on HoT, but that’s besides the point.

Cheers <3

I agree with Angel.6085 100 % on this. I found today’s Mordrem run equally disappointing, if this is an early taster of what is to come with HoT, I am really questioning the pre-purchase. In my own opinions, I have questioned for a long time the validity of Anet trying to squeeze every last drop of funds via Gem Store via its poor percentage of reasonably valuable items to Black Lion Keys/ chests. I have questioned the poor percentages of RNG but to have this… another game content launch, no loot from creatures, no real reward at the end, creatures melting easily (I thought the point of future content was to make healing power and toughness a valued stat, ( zerk zerk again huh?)
The last is I had seven stacks today and got nothing. Ok so end of the day its a game but really… when are you going to start rewarding players (both in PvE and WvW) a little better than has been?

Not knocking the PvP Cthulhu button here but again, the prize money being dished out for the few and you can’t even reward the majority of players with a decent RNG percentage or even reasonable loot to game time rewards seriously sucks. Time for a priority check I think.

I think the most disappointing part of all of this is how amatuer of an event launch this is. I get it, events are rocky. Typically theres a bug for an event… but those events usually last at least two weeks for the LS… this one is a matter of days.

You guys haven’t released content in how long and you botched this event, on top of the rewards for the events (for those that received them) being completely undervalued. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should be able to roll through it twice and get the highest valued item…. but given the calcluations above by other posters – this is utterly ridiculous.

I don’t even want to touch on the dilemmas about rewarding gem store items for in game content because of the can of worms it potentially opens – but really? I did buy both the scarlet set and the toxic set (gifted the toxic to my husband). I’m not REALLY kittened about it being rewarded in game, but I think it really opens a somewhat ethical dilemma about it. You’re rewarding something for in game time that people paid real money for. I’m not angry that someone else is getting something I paid for – but tread lightly with this concept as you have the potential to seriously kitten some people off if you keep that up.

People buy gem store items mostly because they’re exclusive to the gem store and cannot be obtained in game. I think this has the potential to destroy customer trust – which is something that IMO has been a bit on the shakey side.

According to me , mobs are still too stupid and tend to stay in AOE. Their damage is fine.

Nb: I managed to kill all minor champions alone . OP i think it’s more of a L2P issue here.(sorry)

So you can’t kill a major event champ alone?

Let me explain where I am going. You will say “No” because its a major event, more people there.

And when more people show, the event scales, mobs getting more HP and dealing more damage. At some point, with so many people showing up, the damage makes Defenses pointless.

During this past beta, I believe the events were scaling TOO well, and damage was TOO high, thus making using any defense gear pointless.

Sounds good to me, the pve in this game is way too easy. I think it’s mainly a problem of crappy AI, not damage per se.

One shot hits from mobs doesn’t equate to challenging or harder content.

I think the point he is trying to make is that the damage is so high that even on a tank build it wont make much a difference, therefore, you might as well be a squishy character that does high burst/alpha damage.

So lets say then I’m on a guardian with tanky gear, well I’m going to get one shot a lot because of lower health…so why try to tank if it yields little results? Does that make more sense to the people hung up on “zerker” ?

Whats the motive for tying tank? If its all ground effect stuffs why not just a squishy mobile class….see the point? There should be room for characters who want to be big lumbering tanks, not saying you should be able to stand there and spam auto attack, but there needs to be some results for being a tanky character who “knows he can waltz up to the champion and take the heat off the squishy dps characters”

Its more an entire style of gameplay that might be rendered pointless that I’m worried about.

Ok, i’m going to try and clear this up, again, to make it easier.

Yes, defenses work in the normal situations. You barely flinch. When you get to the big events with 3+ vets, multiple elites, champs, and boss, defense is worthless

Is it a L2P issue? Yes! I haven’t done HoT for 3yrs yet, I don’t know the enemy attacks that well yet, defense gear should be there to give me more time to learn in sacrifice of damage! Once I learn, get rid of the defense gear, go full damage!

Should a boss kick my teeth in? Sure, fine. I’m sorry I had to waste my dodges on the two elites attacking me because then I would’ve went down, so I didn’t have the endurance to dodge his one shot attack, sorry. Once I learn the encounter, I will most likely know to just move away from the boss completely till these constantly spawning mobs go on to someone else so I can just dps the boss.

So again, in major events, defensive gear isn’t doing its job. And once again, if damage is so high that defense doesn’t matter, then why go defensive at all?

I just believe scaling needs to be looked at here.

While I like having the new character options, the new zone is…

Garbage.

It’s a greeny version of Dry Top, which I hated. I hate Dry Top so much. I like Silverwastes, because it’s mostly flat, and it’s accessible to join events and participate.
In Verdant Brink, I’m going around in circles on the few paths that are actually visible, and I can’t seem to get to anywhere else in the zone. (Just like Dry Top.)

The encounters are okay, though some of the enemies need tweaks. I’m so far 70/30 on it. Feels like it’d be more fun with friends and guildies, so take that into consideration.

I expect the new content could be worth the basic buy-in, but so far, I kind of regret what I got myself into.

I enjoyed the core game and I’m still enjoying it a lot.
I’m not enjoying HoT, however.
The maps are not optimized and you experience terrible fps drops (tho, to be fair, not as terrible as the first beta).
Gliding is okay, it doesn’t change the gameplay that much, enemies are crazy difficult and solo exploring doesn’t seem to be advised.
Masteries are also kinda meh, yes, you unlock abilities, but they seem to few and not impressive and the moment you unlock them – it’s grinding for statistics.
Maps are vertical but I was not in awe with them. It’s like a mess to me, a melting pot of frustrating chaos, especially for a solo playthrough.
One thing that I like HoT are the new abilities and professions which breath new life in characters.

If your in zerker gear, you will get 1 shot by a lot of things. That’s expected. If you have high toughness/vitality, you won’t be. The different between getting 1 shot and 2 shot is huge, because one allows ‘mistakes’ and one doesn’t.

If its dumbed down again, we are going to repeat history and thats going to look really, really bad for the next expansion. Hell, if that happens again there might not even be a next expansion.

No. In major events, Defenses DO NOT matter. You will down in the same amount of shots as zerker, no matter your defenses. Thus, defenses DO NOT matter, so just go zerker.

If you make damage too high that defenses don’t matter, defenses are useless so go full damage. If you make damage too low, defenses are useless, go damage.

As said before, stacking defense should be there to allow mistakes to happen and to learn. If you still can’t grasp fights, then stay in the gear, that’s fine, I’m all for that. But if the mob is going to two shot you anyway in defense gear, what’s the point?

Yes, in the learning process, I do get one shotted against normal mobs at times at this stage because I don’t know the tells exactly. But once I do, then I’m not going to die and I can kill fast. Its like the karkas. Dodge the initial shots, you’ll be fine.

I agree with going defense until I learn. Once I learn, go zerk.

Damage is Too High...

Serophous.9085

I found that it is a matter of knowing the mobs, you can still die but you reduce the chances.
Champ giant toads have the same type of attack as husks at tripple wurm, stun then punch. If you avoid the stun you avoid the punch and take no damage.
Champ tree frogs have an aoe killer attack that is easily hidden in visual effects, but if you do spot it then again zero damage.
Wyvern, stay to the side to avid the knockdown and flame breath.
Smoke thingies, draw them out of the red circles since they take no damage in it, their damage has been reduced in their mist attack so fairly easy now.
Snipers —dodge, put up a reflect if you have one, break line of sight if you don’t.

Which again, proves my point of defense not mattering.

To me, when someone uses defense gear, it means they are increasing the forgivability in making a mistake. “Oops, I didn’t dodge that attack. Well, at least I didn’t lose 3/4 my hp and just 1/4, be ready next time.” If they continue to make those mistakes, then they are gonna die no matter what, despite defenses.

Now, when they get better, learn the encounters more, then they feel more confident in their abilities and may think of going more damage. This is actually how I played the game up to this point. My main set of gear use to be knight’s, because I still wanted defenses. But Once I learned the encounter’s, I went full zerk. I knew when and how to dodge, when i could take a hit, etc, that defenses weren’t that important anymore.

Chances are, once HoT comes out, I may go more defensive again until I learn what to expect (or go my Daredevil build and laugh as I dodge everything and be glass cannon).

But right now, that doesn’t matter, because during the learning, I’m dying even in defense. There’s no point in me even trying it, I might as well learn in zerk gear. Which, according to at least my theory, is wrong.

So like I said, I think the scaling damage needs to be looked at in events.

DURING MAJOR EVENTS! (phew!)

Now, before you go and yell at me and throw tomatoes. Here me out.

The damage of Mobs is way too high at the moment, especially on the vets, elites, and champs.

Now, testing in zerker I thought “yeah, i have no defenses, course I’m gonna die fast.” But then I thought, huh, well, if that’s true, then I should be able to live more easily in Toughness gear at least.

Boy was I wrong.

I went with warrior Defense/Tactics/Strength, shout heals, healing regen, etc. Just went straight up as much survivability I could grab. Then i took soldier’s gear. Heals would be crap, but I got my hp and toughness. Dolyak runes. The celestial food buff. Dolyak signet.

Armor: 3605 if I get retaliation, 4005 if reviving and have retaliation.
HP: 33,170

Now, going against normal mobs not from events, or a defense event where maybe a few vets at a time, sure, you’re gonna brush that stuff off easily. I don’t think I got below half hp.

But when you get to the big event chains, final event chains with a champ or Unique?

It. Doesn’t. Matter.

The Boss is gonna destroy you if you don’t dodge his attacks, while dodging his elite minion’s attacks at the same time too, and then the 3-4 vets, etc. You are gonna go down in 2-3 hits. Defenses don’t matter.

Now, I am going to repeat that. Soloing stuff, the armor is doing its job. I’m basically untouchable as long as I don’t pull too many vets (the poison frogs to be exact). But when i get into the event chains, there is no point. I’m going to go down just as fast as that other person in full zerk, which makes ME the weak chain of the group, because I can’t deal damage.

So, let me say this:

Making mobs difficult, is fine. Hitting a bit harder, sure. different mechanics, fine. I like how the poison arrow frogs work, and the one that slams into the ground, and so on. These are interesting to watch out for, and if you don’t, you will die. The difference is, when you get to the bigger group event stuff, it goes from fun and difficult, to absurd. When it goes to that level, defenses doesn’t matter, it becomes again “kill fast”.

So, yes. Damage in group events need to take a look at. Maybe the scaling is too high, maybe mobs are spawning too much, who knows? But at the moment, if I want to do a major event chain, go zerk.

Personally I’m enjoying that you need to take stability and stunbreaks to have a chance here.

Y’know, I would take stability skills more often, if it weren’t so lopsided in favor of the enemy.

Me: Long cooldowns for short effect. Often 40 sec or more for <6 seconds of effect.
Them: Multi-hit knock/daze/down on less than 10 second cooldown.

What that tells me is I shouldn’t bother.

My impressions of the beta :::

Everything looks good Anet. My favorite professions plays how it should, and the elite spec is awesome, and truly makes everything I loved about this class even better!….well, that’s what I would say if Rangers had access to theirs. Oh well, since not one of the elite specs revealed so far really interest me that much, I’ll keep running around with a Ranger, along with the couple dozen…hundred…thousand players that do the same thing (seriously, I saw more Rangers during the last beta weekend than everything except Revenants. Didn’t see as much this weekend from my limited play time, but there’s still enough to wonder….Why The heck are we still running with that and not something “new” and “cool”?!? I hope the Druid Elite Spec is good Anet, seems people still like their Rangers.)

On the map….meh. Claustrophobic, cramped, busy, no Aesthetic quality whatsoever, too many vines, no landmarks to speak of that help with navigation, and since the map is normally useless in this game…I don’t like this section of the map any better than the last section.

Enemies….Its interesting that we brought down several champion frogs before the Veteran was killed during an event. Other than that….business as usual.

Heart of Thorns is a copy-and-paste fest. Do you really think people aren’t going to notice you’ve scaled up Hylek and pasted some rock-dog, beetles, and spiders before calling it a day?

I will cover that “copy-and-paste” part below.

The creatures you’ve made are really no-effort creatures. Here’s a single creature from DAoC:
http://camelot.allakhazam.com/Mobs/pics/b01/h-tangle-weed.jpg

There’s more effort put into that level 1 creature than anything ‘new’ I’ve seen in Heart of Thorns.

To me, THAT is a genetic accident. I don’t see the effort you are talking about.

Wow! A walking tree/Ent from LotR. Never seen anything like that before. cough copy-paste cough

Looks like a mix between a Murloc and a standard sea monster taken from old horror movies. Copy-paste much?

Oh, an angry walking tree. Now that changes everything

… All of the stuff from DAoC is exciting. Fresh. Original.

See above.

OK… I wouldn’t call a tree frog a genetic accident – even though you could argue that evolution is based on “genetic accidents” (kinda, it’s not that simple though)…

It seems clear to me, that you prefer the enemy design in other games over the one ANet came up with. That’s all fair and good – to each his/her own.

However, talking about original design where there is none, is kinda unfair – especially considering there is much more innovation in the few mobs ANet added in HoT than in any of your examples.

So what I’m getting from OP is this example

1 man practices, keeps in shape, does all he can to prepare for a competitive sport.
2nd man can’t be bothered, because he doesn’t enjoy being active.

Both participate. 1st man ran the whole 10 miles. The other man took a nap and watched television and takes a taxi to the finish line and expects the same prize.

How is that fair to the person who earned it?

It’s not. And that’s what should matter more over.

It’s the same reason why drops and rewards are different for story mode dungeons vs explorable.

Elitists seem to forget, this isn’t a game about fairness, this is a game to be enjoyed… if a casual doesn’t enjoy it, game over, period. It doesn’t have to be fair or ethical or virtuous, or honorable, or respectable, or <insert descriptor here>.

What you are not understanding is that if you run 75% of your base off, you end up with an unfunded and dying game. Yes you will be a god, but it will only be of 6 people and your game will not be around long and then you will be off to ruin another game. Cuz if only the elite can have the end reward, no one will play but elites, and there is only so much room at the top my friend… those who cant attain it, will never play it making your reward obsolete in the end…
