Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?

It’s 400 points total to unlock everything in an elite spec training line – I just can’t remember off hand how many points folks have currently if they have done all the existing ones, but it’s right around 200. The rest you’ll need to earn in jungle to unlock the deeper skills/traits/etc. in the training line.

You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.

Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.

A Portrait of the Player as a WvW Regular

- Two accounts (actually I have three but only purchased HoT for these two).
- Twelve level 80s
- Two above 60 hero points
- Only one with 100% map completion
- 75% of toons under 20% map completion
- 5904 combined total gaming hours
- No Legendary
- No full sets of ascended gear
- Purchaser of gems with real cash
- 1892 combined WXP rank (677 and 1215 respectively)

How can you help me? Can I hire you to get the hero points for my toons?

Anet should totally cater to you, because your case is the same as 90% of the playerbase.

His case is the same as a lot more players then you think. GJ on the ignorance though, mega servers give you the illusion of PvE being more populated. You would be surprised how many WvW players there actually are.

You aren’t obligated to get elite specs, you choose to do so voluntarily. No ones holding a gun to your head.

No instead they have people heaping derision on what was a big selling point for a number of people, that instead of it being a core part of HoT, it’s essentially ‘a reward’ for playing HoT. Quite a big difference.

Exactly. These specs have been hyped since day 1. Most of the news articles and points of interest streams were all about various elites. It was not like they were all-powerful either: while some fixed things others were just a flat-out ‘no’. It was clear they were aiming for a rough balance with existing professions.

Everyone expected to use them from day 1 (albeit with an unknown number of HPs, but we were assured it would be less that world completion would give us). I bought HOT for the new mechanics, I planned on looking at the new regions later at my own pace. There have been plenty of threads that took day-1 elites for granted ….. plenty of chances for someone at anet to say something.

Exactly my attitude as well. I pre-purchased the expansion in large part because the new specs looked fun for my mesmer and necro. I worked on gathering skill points so I could play those specs. I intended to take the new zones slowly.

That’s not what I’m getting. The new elite specs will, at best, be weak and incomplete, so to do the new content I’ll need to use the old traits/skills. I won’t be playing the new specs until after I’ve already worn out the expansion. I don’t get to use the new toys until after the fun is done.

But it’s just a game, and very optional. I’m already hunting a new place to waste time.

I just don’t get people. first it was " we need something to do! living world sucks!" Now it’s “OMG I HAVE TO DO THINGS??”

This is a dumb point, because people were planning on doing the content anyway.

This was a dumb post, because I was planning on replying anyway. See how useless both of our comments were now?

No, because what you’ve just said is completely irrelevant and nonsensical.

Now instead of cruising through the new content at a nice, easy pace to get the most for my money, I’m going to have to speedrun through it just so I can play the elite spec I want to play as quickly as possible. The best part? Once I finally get it, I’ll already be burnt out on the new content, and I won’t want to bother playing with my brand new elite spec that acted as the entire incentive to complete the content in the first place.

But hey, at least you guys get your progression, right?

If people were planning on doing it anyway, there’s no point complaining about doing it.

For the 1000000 times, people want to do the new expansion content with the new elite spec builds, not with the characters they’ve been playing for the past 3 years. People want to enjoy new WvW maps with the new elite spec builds, not karma train and grind hundreds of ranks with characters they’ve played for the past 3 years just to unlock the elite spec builds.

People do want to do the content and play the new expansion. People will do raids, grind masteries, farm new mats, work towards legendaries, play all those new cool race games they’ve created, etc.. They just would rather do it with the new elite specs.

So disappointing… There were tons of players like me who prepared for these elites, planned builds and theory crafted, made ascended armor sets and weapon sets, slotted their gear with runes, sigils, infusions, bought gems to convert to gold to buy a bunch of stuffz…

Months and months and months of hype, streams, pr… Then the big letdown… Really kills the excitement…

Setting grinding gate to core game content is just plain bad design.
First mastery system, I can live with that. Then this….sorry can’t take the compromise again.

You already use mastery system to set a exp grinding gate for map exploration. Then you use this map exploration as a gate for just playing elite specs? How many gates do you want to set for players just to enjoy the core content.

Shhhh
or we might get a gate for our gated gate, because they heard we like gates….

I need smacked just for typing that x.x

Sorry, but that is not really fair to him. He only works there and likely did not make the call that it would be 400. Actually, I consider it a favour that he let us know rather than they kept us in the dark completely.

He is the lead game director/designer. It is well within his control to make this kind of call or make a call to change it. Consequently, if he isn’t aware that this is a problem, or didn’t forsee the reaction of the community be it either disconnection or lack of interaction with those who did make this decision, there’s a huge failure on his end to either get connected with the players or to look over what the hell is going on with arguably the most important, game-changing part of the expansion.

Some players are regarding this game the same as diablo3 in which grinding is indeed entirely its journey.

This game is not. The progression here is more about personal skill improvement. I am much better mesmer than I was 10 months ago? Was that from gear grinding? No. Was that from getting more skills and traits? No. Was that from grinding hero point challenges? Hell No. I become better because I have better understanding of the class. I have better mechanical skills of the class. I know how to handle different situations with the class in dungeons, PvP and WvW.

That’s what I call a journey in video game. Grinding hero points is way too shallow for me to call a journey. I know some players truly like grinding as their journey. But we already have it. That is legendary weapons and other rare cosmetics.

400 hero points is outrageous. The specs are hardly worth playing miserable pve for that long.

From a practical standpoint its 40 points (since the new locations are worth 10 points each)… they just delivered a “divide by ten” kick in the junk to all of the effort people have made to prepare for HoT.

The real question is round two of Especs… I plan to skip Berserker so when the second Warrior Espec comes out I’m gonna be sitting on 600 points. How much is the second one gonna cost? 2,000 with each hero challenge on the new map being worth 50? Or will I have to buy all of the Berserker spec I DO NOT WANT before I can spend points on the second warrior Espec? Is that how you’re gonna stop “first day completion” when the subject comes up next time?

The precedent being set is TERRIBLE.

Okay, one thing. Can we not call folks who did map completion on several characters within the space of a few weeks “lazy”?
There’s obviously grind and a half in that alone. The issue is that we’ve BEEN the industrious little mmo players. Many players have been preparing any way we could for release, only to find out that the grind from a week ago is massively devalued and we’ll have to grind some more IN ZERG CONTENT in order to actually have the full specs at our fingertips.

I can’t stand zerg content. I tolerate it for brief stretches like Tequatl or Triple Trouble, even for some of the silverwastes. But I hate the prolonged zerging that this type of railroading will force players into. It will just be everyone on the map rushing from hero point to hero point, meta events be kitten ed. That gameplay very quickly puts me to sleep. Before this news, we knew there’d be SOME zerging, simply because anet cannot resist huge fustercluck events. But we assumed there’d be options for those of us who wanted a different experience.

I wanted to explore the jungle, take my time with masteries and learning lore, but that’s moot now. Gotta go on autopilot and join the hero point train which will dominate map chat for months. Then do it again… and again… and again… and again… and again. Then do it fully one more time for my brand spanking new revenant, even though people who’ve tried revenant during all the betas know how incomplete the class is as a whole without the so-called elite spec.

Someone asked earlier in the thread, how is a party going to know that a member actually has their elite spec fully unlocked, anyway? At the very least, I’d like to know the answer to that. I don’t think it’s so lazy and entitled to want to ensure that the party you put together to tackle the hard content actually has all the content accessible on that particular character. The raids will be hard enough and strain people’s patience regardless, as that’s the nature of raids that are difficult. Adding to that fact that a player can’t reasonably expect the other max level characters in their party to fully have their classes is a bit insulting.

I seriously don’t understand the rationale behind this. It’s almost like you guys want people to rush through the content as quickly as they can just to unlock the build they want, and then complain about not having anything to do with the new build because all of the content is already done by the time they got to use it.

This just screams poor design choice to me. The people who would want to grind their way up could just do so voluntarily, and the rest of us could actually enjoy ALL of the content at a pace and sequence of our choice.

Furthermore, the shifting of weight so heavily in favor of Maguuma challenges over that of the base game completely devalues everything we currently have. Why would anyone want to bother playing vanilla map content anymore when they can just boost to 80 and then unlock everything they need much more efficiently by going to the jungle?

… So in order to play the new content with the specializations, I need to play and likely complete most of the new content?

That’s really disappointing, oh well on the plus side I can delete my engineer.

I created it thinking I could lvl it using my Elite Specialization since the kit system was so awful and the hammer was cool, now I know I would need to complete all other Specializations and the new map to get to play the character the way I want to.

Seriously, the Elite Specialization is supposed to be a whole new way to play the profession, not a straight up upgrade so why treat as such? And why wall it behind not only the other specializations but also the new content? What, the devs think we’ll get our elite specs then not play the new content or sothing!?

Thank God SWTOR released their expansion, so I’ll have something to play this weekend, I kinda lost the will to play HOT now, the new content I was looking forward to now feels like, well grind…

Great decision ArenaNet.

Most people that play RPGs like a sense of character progression.
Since now our character progression is horizontal progression with elite specializations, I am very happy to see that I won’t get my full elite spec on the first 5 minutes of the expansion.
I hope no amount of QQ and backlash is enough to make you guys change course.

For a future expansion, a suggestion I would make is to include the new skill points during the beta and make people need them to unlock the elite specs (even if it is at a accelerated pace), so people don’t get the unrealistic expectation that everything will be handed out to them on a silver platter.

I’m going to state it again. The number of people not understanding that we are not complaining about working for it. We are complaining about the high point cost for every character, that many will in essence be grinding the maps over and over, not by choice, but by necessity to get the elite specs.

Isn’t this just like lvling up like in the other game expansions? Why is this a problem now?

Because this isn’t just any other game, this is Guild Wars. GW2 isn’t supposed to make you grind your levels, it’s supposed to have horizontal progression where players play at their own will, in their own time, at their own pace, to enjoy the game. Now, in order to play the elite specializations that many bought the expansion for, people will not be taking their time to enjoy their game. They’ll be burning through and grinding for hero points and masteries just so they could unlock elite specs. Not for one character, but for every single frigging characters and many people by now have many many characters.

I’d much rather they let us have elite spec to play with right away, so we can work on cosmetic points and masteries at our own pace. Let us explore the map at our own pace without feeling like we need to rush through it just to unlock the elite specs.

Same with those WvW enthusiasts. I’d rather they let me play Reaper which I had a wonderful time playing over beta weekends. Now I’ll be stuck playing a base necro grinding and ktraining just so I can speed rank up to unlock the Reaper. That’s not fun, that’s a grind. It doesn’t fit GW2’s philosophy.

DO NOT CHANGE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELITE SPEC.

DO CHANGE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELITE SPEC.

Even forgetting everything about grinding and what not you are missing something pretty crucial. Almost all of what they have talked of about HOT since day 1 has been how awesome each specs was. People were then playing with them all through the BWEs so took them for granted. So you are shocked people actually assumed they could, oh, use them by buying HOT?

Upcoming Global Change to Player Minions

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Roy Cronacher

Roy Cronacher

Game Designer

Hey all,

As some of you may have seen in raids during the last BWE, we were trying out something new with player minions. Basically, in that final BWE, player minions did not take damage from boss attacks. We thought that made minion-based professions feel so much better in combat, but that change did expose some problems such as minions being able to withstand a damaging attack indefinitely.

We wanted minions to not die left and right, but we did want them to have some attrition instead of being completely immune to attacks. This problem is mainly prevalent in PvE as we have huge attacks all over the place that are meant to be dodged by players but unfortunately for minions, they can’t dodge.

After reviewing BWE results, we wanted to create a better system to accomplish this as a global change for minions. To do that, we made it so that unless a minion is specifically targeted by a creature, they will be dealt drastically reduced damage and condition duration from attacks. Currently, this is set to 95% reduction as we feel like it’s a good starting place, but we’ll continue to monitor and adjust it. This means if your minion gains agro from a creature it will still take full damage, but if there is area effect damage hitting your minion, instead of usually killing it instantly, it will slowly attrition it down.

We felt like minions were in a good place for PvP so we didn’t want to change them there for now. Thus, the interaction between players and minions in PvP combat will remain the same.

The change is for all player minions, this includes things like engineer turrets and ranger spirits as well. This will be in for HoT Launch in a few days.

Class unbalance will kill Raids

… or raids will kill the community.

Engineers is far better at condi damage then anything in the game and Druid is too much superior to Ventari, Guardian, Ele or any other healer in the game.
So basically everyone in raid will look for Scrapper and Druid, and kick almost everything else.

What I think woould be correct is to redesign raids to make other classes useful, or make the other classes at least comparable to scrapper and druid in terms of condi damage and healing.

Just to add my two cents, I agree the support classes are fun in design, but so far not much has changed or makes them really valuable. I too hardly used the celestial form on the druid, because there hardly was any use.

What I also noted is that the game is still really damage oriented. You can always see the health bars on damaged enemies in view, but not those of other players unless you mouse over. Arenanet please consider the health bars to make healing more intuitive. Spamming heals at random on a cluster of players isn’t so satisfying.

I remember the karka event too. That’s why I’m glad they dropped that idea like a hot rock and never went back to it. (Except for whatever that thing last weekend was supposed to be.)

It sounds good on paper. In practice it was just frustrating and dull. Even on the day, when my group finally beat the Ancient Karka and got our rewards I was just relieved it was over so I could stop sitting at my computer waiting for the next ‘super exciting’ event to grind through until I got disconnected.

The 2 week long events were a decent compromise, but I much prefer permanent content.

I can understand not compensating for the pre-dc stacks, but what about the after-dc ones? I had a dc one of the days, it was early in the event and I managed to get 10-ish stacks after logging in again. At the end of the event – no reward for these new stacks. Don’t you have a record of the after-dc stacks, so you can send out Blooms for them?

I would like to see the Blooms drop and be useful again. This event was really rushed and caused a lot of negative emotions, so I feel like you’ll have to make up for it with a better one. XD You’ve heard all the complaints already, I’m not gonna repeat them.

My advice/suggestions for future short events like this one:
- Don’t make people work for themselves in a group event. It’s not cool. (This applies for long-lasting events as well.) If your reward will depend on what you do, it should be based on your real contribution, not on the number of events you passed by. Give more currency for completing an event with gold or silver than with bronze. Or something like that.
- Lower the prices of the items or give more currency as reward for doing the events. If it’s going to last 3-5 days, people should enjoy it and not stress over not being able to get a nice reward if they don’t participate in every kitten event during the day (and night).
- Have two or more tiers of the same items, but with different event currency to gold cost ratio (a rough example: an item in tier 1 costs 200 event currency and 10 gold, the same item in tier 2 costs 100 event currency and 40 gold). It seems like a fair deal to me. If I have the time, I’ll save my gold and grind the event currency. If I don’t have the time, I’ll do the events once a day and make up the rest with gold. There will always be people who are more willing to participate in the events than to waste their gold, so the event zones won’t be empty. At the same time, people that can’t spend that much time playing or find the events too boring can sacrifice their gold (or gems turned into gold). Everyone wins?

Lastly, if you could add ALL account-bound currencies to the wallet, it would be great. I still have leftovers from past events sitting in my bank. If they will never ever ever be used again, make them tradable for gold or another currency that’s in use. And if you think that they might be used again someday, just add them to the wallet. My bank will really appreciate that.
