Dodge roll “randomly” fails. The dodge is getting interrupted by certain autoattacks.
To avoid this, you can try to make sure you stop autoattacking before executing the dodge. For example, fighting a giant (where it’s imperative to dodge all the stomps), I’ll turn around to stop the autoattack before each dodge.
Awesome, thanks for all the feedback. Which weapon besides the shortbow would you recommend for the secondary then?
I’d say shortbow or sword. I’m not sure I’d pair it with axe, just because axe also does low damage against single targets (when it can’t bounce), but with a high damage pet it might not matter. Personally I’ve been using sword primary with greatsword secondary, but sword can be pretty difficult/painful to use with the #1 locking out movement and dodging, so you might not like it.
Edit: just a note, I’ve measured DPS figures for sword, greatsword, and shortbow, but not for axe, so I could be wrong about that claim.

Going from a level 30 Story Quest to a level 48 ( skipping the story line!! )

Asking this question directly:
It should be noted that the greatsword does very low damage — much less than sword or shortbow, for example. Its advantages are
- AoE (relative to shortbow) — it hits 3 targets.
- Safety (relative to sword) — automatic evasion on third attack, and does not lock out movement/dodging like sword does.
In light of this, I think it makes more sense to pair the greatsword with a high damage option, rather than a “safe” option. Of course, the shortbow, which you seem to be leaning toward, is such an option, so that works.
The new Story Issues sticky thread reads “While this bug is fixed, we can’t retroactively set you on the correct quest steps, rewrite your journal, etc.”
If I have a character whose story was thrown off track by a (now fixed) bug, does this mean I have to remake the character to fix the issue? Or should I hold out until you implement the ability to retroactively fix or roll back stories?
Alternate title: “Dodge roll is interrupted by autoattacks”.
In normal play, it appears that the dodge roll randomly fails. When I say “fail”, I mean it consumes endurance and sometimes plays the roll animation, but does not provide the evasion or movement.
However, this bug is not random and I have precise reproduction steps. The issue is that when a dodge roll is activated at (almost) the same time as a particular skill in the autoattack chain, that skill interrupts the dodge roll.
I have directly reproduced this with warrior greatsword, warrior hammer, and ranger greatsword, with the third attack (of the #1 chain) in each case. I suspect the issue is more widespread than that, but this is all I know for certain. Here are example reproduction steps:
- Start autoattacking with one of the above weapons. Watch the cast bar.
- At the precise moment that the second attack ends and the third attack is beginning, hit your dodge key.
If timed right, this causes the dodge roll to end almost as soon as it begins.
In this video I try to dodge between the second and third attacks of the warrior greatsword autoattack chain. Endurance is consumed and the dodge roll animation starts to play, but the dodge is almost immediately interrupted by the third attack.

Warrior elite skill, Battle Standard.
If the Battle Standard cast is canceled or interrupted, it sometimes still goes on full cooldown instead of the 4-second interruption cooldown. Specifically, it seems that if it is canceled more than (roughly) halfway through the cast, then it goes on full cooldown.
In any case, not a bug. Different professions have different base health values. Just from memory,
Low: guardian, thief, elementalist
Medium: ranger, engineer, mesmer
High: warrior, necromancer
Specifically
- After loading a map, the first in-combat weapon swap produces a 10-second cooldown (should be 5).
- After performing an in-combat weapon swap, the next out-of-combat weapon swap produces a 5-second cooldown (should be 0.5).
- After performing an out-of-combat weapon swap, the next in-combat weapon swap produces a 10-second cooldown (should be 5).
Same here and it’s pretty widespread. Related threads:

According to today’s game status update, issues with Battle of Fort Trinity have been fixed. However, I completed that mission while it was broken and got sent to the wrong subsequent mission. Now, after the fix I am still stuck with that mission.
In particular, I am stuck with the mission “Liberating Apatia”, which is completely unrelated to my past story (the Shell Shock line).
