Why do bosses have so much health?

and still the argument applies. Yes, you CAN play the game in any way you want to, you just cannot expect to win if you play it wrong. You can tell your boss how much he sucks, you can show up 2 hours late to work, but we live in a universe of consequences. Sure, play the game like another game you know, but to believe you are entitled to succeed regardless of the way you play is outright ridiculous.

Doesnt this go against the design though? Whats the point of having diffrent trait trees and skills if you only need to use the “best” and that is the “proper” way to play?

“TL;DR: Dungeons are becoming easier and easier the more people learn how to play. This is a serious L2P issue. I don’t necessarily mean it in a bad way, but bads will be bads.”

I keep seeing this, And no one explains what they mean, So until you clarify, you dont really hold any water. What is the effective way to do a dungeon, what do you need, what stats are important, what types of skills, etc.

“and yet mana management is yet another lame archaic time wasting strategy designed to slow down the fights and it’s another money think.

Bosses are not that hard in this game, if you play it properly !
most dungeons except for certain paths in Arah and CoE can be done in less than 30 minutes.

Leutenant mobs go down in seconds.
champions go down in mere minutes.
legendary Bosses can be taken down in 10-15 minutes or so.

If anything I’d say the Bosses HP seems to large only when playing the game the wrong way.

I used to think the same as you lot, till I started to adapt to how this game is meant to played and stopped trying to play it like a traditional mmorpg."

Do you run with pugs? Cause the only people who say this have guilds. And yeah of course guildies will make your life easy peasy, but what about us who go with pugs?

Also can you clarify how I can make my dungeon runs cleaner even with pugs? how am I “supposed” to play this game.

"

i dont mind a single boss having a very high hp. but having so many smaller bosses and monsters along the way that have very high hp is just time wasting and not fun."

this to the maximum, the scale is stupid. Bosses are so much easier then the 6 dudes you fight before them, cause the 6 guys have kitten amounts of HP as well, but there is so many of them it makes it a zerg die and get back up fest, and thats not fun at all. The bosses are fun, they take a while yes, but the trash mobs have 1 attack that does super damage, thats all they do, takes forever to get past them with pugs.

We need a long range single target Direct damage kit.

Try the toolkit and tell me if you are still squishy, you might not wanna go all in melee with toolkit, but in pve atleast, the toolkit does obscene damage, and has the utility to melee just fine. I wouldnt go toolkit melee in dungeons persay, but thats just cause I feel like dungeoning needs reworks, im still new to Engi, but the toolkit ive got to say is one of my favorite kits so far, its risky to melee, but its damage pay off is huge.

I also would not like to see a “sniper” kit, its just so forced… the rifle is the long range weapon, the sniper kit is just bleh, use nades.

Engineers in a worse state then Ranger? Give Ranger Grenade and Bomb kit and we won’t be complaining, we will be enjoying the faceroll.

not only that, but an odd but imo close comparison is Rifle vs not only the shortbow but the longbow.

Longbow sucks cause its 1 is kitteny as crap, its other abilities imo are really solid, its just that since 1 is so bad, it cant match up.

SB 1 got nerfed, and its 2-5 dont pack the punch of longbows and have less control aspects imo.

Rifle has a powerful auto that peirces by default, has mobility and pushes AND a buckshot ability for big damage, as well as a ranged immoble, I recently switched to eng as an alt to my ranger and my weapon feels like an a core to the class, I feel like my weapon really lets me be active and powerful. something comes up, I buckshot it, push it away, and then net it and auto away. its fASTER then LB, and stronger then SB, so its just ugh, such a good weapon.

Rangers are so bad because their weapons are TERRIBLE, pets AI isnt as bad as people make it, but when combined with bad weapons? its a double whammy really. I love my ranger, and will keep playing it when fixes come around, but my engi is alot of fun.

Whereas Ranger are forced to play with stone-smart AI on their side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk5DiFJAtWQ&feature=plcp

Some might say Mesmer suffer from the same problem since their F-abilities also rely on minions.
Mesmer however draw profit from blowing up their “pets”.
They can use them for flat damage, conditions or – a self protection skill which is worth up to three dodges in a row.

Rangers however only profit from a living pet, the longer their pet lives there more damage it can dish out.
Sadly pet neither can dodge, nor take reduced from AoE and in the end their reaction time is so freaking slow that it is just plain impossible to command them into safety battling a boss like “Mr A” or Lupicus.

In the end the maximum effectiveness of a Ranger is capped by an AI feeling lucky rather than by player skill.
It’s like 80% is up to you; but the rest is a number between 0- and 20% which is randomly generated."

Yeah, but look at the people saying “I dont want to use a ranged pet” “All pets should be viable”

what about my necro? “I dont wanna be anything other then a MM, all builds should be viable!”

Until they remove AoE kitten, then ALL pet classes will NEVER be viable, and thats plain bad design.

Those two mentioned above require well timed dodges to survive the 12k damage AoEs.
Too bad pet can’t use use dodge.

Crucible path 3 “Mr. A” 3rd fight.
Try it once and count the seconds till your pet bites the dust."

This to me screams bad game design. Not a flaw with the pet. this means ANY class that is reliant on pets aka turret engis, MMs etc will get kitten by this as well, meaning its not JUST a ranger thing, but rather the game giving you many pet options, in classes, and not being balanced around it.

Why the hate for the longsword??

It actually has MORE damage than the shortbow on the 1* attack, has an evade, like on the short bow, and it has a poison strike like on the shortbow. Depending on your off hand (which is usually warhorn for me for the buff) you can wind up doing amazing damage.

in sPvP, I roll over people who think I am an easy class and the longsword actually does MORE damage (using QZ) than the shortbow crossfire. Only difference is that one requires you to be in melee, while the other one can be done at ranged.

People think they are so much safer at ranged than in melee, and to some extent this is true. But with signet of stone (traited…oddly, needing that 30 points into marksman tree) you can avoid a thief’s init dump, or that warrior’s 100 blades frenzy, and then pop entangle and unleash your own.

If you can’t burst down a thief in the time QZ is active, it only means you stopped using longsword 1* when he goes stealth.

Longsword is enjoyed, the problem is the “self root” that happens sometimes. Once that gets fixed, im sure plenty of people will use sword more often.

Rangers were bad before the SB nerf.

Its diffrent for me, I find my Utility skills make me amazing. Despite all the hate, “Sick em!” is quite useful in pve. With that shout+QZ I solo all kinds of stuff in overworld pve. In dungeons, Spirits are really good, just dont put them in stupid places. The get up and walk trait is bad, dont bother. Spirits have 100% upkeep anyways other then the elite, and in dungeons your fighting isnt mobile enough to require you to move them.

Weapons skill sets are garbage though. Axe/Warhorn and SB is what I run with, and I love Axe/Horn its really a decent midline mix. And thats what makes it so good imo, But the other weapons not only need bug fixes, but plain need damage buffs. I like their utility, its good and helps the team. But they leave a big gap in damage, and thats just kitteny. We can do all the roles well right now imo except damage and thats what id like to see them fix up. Leave all the skills the same, but buff up the damage!

pets are all kinds of well, difficult to deal with for most.

Also, pvp is pvp, their will never be balance in pvp, thats proven fact by fighting games and other pvp based games.

@Gohlar

I’m sorry, I must have been confused, you seemed disgruntled, I assumed you were having difficulties with the dungeons… And no, running dungeons the “right way” is not getting killed a lot.. once you know how to do a dungeon, you SHOULD be able to do it, with perfect execution, without dying at all.

You say it has shallower classes, I’m not going to go in to class structure. You also say that I’m pretending that “addition by subtraction is good”. I am not saying that.. I am telling you that there is no subtraction… I am saying that all people perform all roles.. and THAT is awesome.

The fact that every class can fill every role is a horrible thing. I’ve never felt so….generic in a mmo, ever. Homogenization at its worst.

But thats wrong.

My support as a ranger is nothing like a guardians support, just because both are the same role does not mean they function the same.

I know rangers are supposed to have pets but why must he build around them .We should be able to play without them and have builds that don’t depends on the pet for damage.

Look at the Neco by no means does he have build around his minions or his profession skill Death shroud very very few build around after they nerfed it in beta plus a if played right all their weapon set do good damage.

So getting ranger which must be played with a pet and good % of his trait are pet base and broken weapon set you are left with no choice but for every ranger to pretty much be play in the same way .The nerf was to bancle the ranger out but all it did was to break him more ! Would have been a much better move to nerf up some of his other weapon sets giving else other choices besides SB .

All necros use Deathshroud.

You know why I dont play a necro? I love minions, and I love the necro, was one of my mains in GW1.

I despise playing one in GW2 because deathshroud feels so lame as a “mechanic” the rangers mechanic is integral to their game play, and I like that! it makes me want to abuse what my class has to offer.

Death shroud does not really. I understand it makes you mega hard to kill because it is a second life bar, but its skills outside of 4 in DS are boring and feel weak. 1 is alright.

I could play a necro and never need or feel the urge to use DS unless I wanted to tank a bit more in pve.

Rangers mechanic is much more important to them, as its like having a second character almost. My feline can do upwards of 4k crits at level 60, just with normal attacks, meaning when I hit sic em and QZ, and stealth him up, he blows things up. Of course this does not work well in dungeons where damage is useless and you need survivability. But that calls for a diffrent tool a ranged pet, which luckily, rangers have!

imo if you dont like the pet, you need a new class. Cause saying “I want buffs if I lock my pet forever!”

I want a new profession mechanic for my necro then that gives me a permanent bone critter that I can micro like rangers pet mechanic. The class was designed as a pet class, and you either treat it as such, or play a new class.

Dont forget boons. Before I walked into dungeons I thought protection was silly, since “damage, I never take that!”

removing 2/3 of the equation? Does everyone realize when they say they “removed the trinity of tank/dps/heal” they MEANT they have a different trinity? It’s called control/dps/support :-P it’s just done differently.. there are still roles and you can do them all and are sometimes expected to do all roles in one encounter.. making the encounters much more complex.. the people running dungeons that are just running back from the WPs and going all dps are just doing it wrong ;-)

even with my party running a good mix of support/damage/utility/control we still gotta wipe and get back up a couple times. feels bad man.

You do know all you have to do is move out of targeted aoes and hit f3 and the pet will run to you and also get out of the AoEs, I have not done the two listed, But if it is INSTANT aoe, then you would litterally have to have god like reflexes to dodge it. I found devourer pets didnt die in any of the 30-60 dungeons so far, aslong as you micro them.

if you can get out of the aoe, you can get your devourer pet out of the aoe aslong as you are not mega kitteny.

Dont get me wrong, pets need something, but claiming its cause of AI is stupid. imo its poor dungeon design that has little “Skill” or difficulty, when really most dungeons are “These guys hit you for truckloads of damage, you can kite for a few seconds, then your endurance is out and they two shot you.”

Then you revive, and run back and repeat until you wittle the mob down. When im with pugs, thats all it really becomes. So to say that its pets who are at fault is stupid. Its kitteny dungeon design that is at fault.

Pet stats?

Dice Dragon.4326

I figure id start a discussion on this. Anyone feel like pet stats dont work the same? My bear supposedly has 2500 vit, which translates to well over 25k hp at 10 hp per point which is what the wiki states that vit is. thats not even counting base hp if they have it.

I wondered exactly howmany hits my bear could take in a dungeon, and it was basicly two. Despite its stats saying it had more armor then me, and more HP by double. It still died in two hits just like me. on over land pve, it feels like bears will never die, but in dungeons they get rampaged. But this to me feels like bad design on dungeons in general since well… That happens to litterally everyone. you die in two hits no matter what.

Please note: whenever talking about how strong your pets are, defensively or offensively, please state the amount of trait points invested in BM.

Thanks.

I got 30 in BM, and my pet still dies. The problem is that pets have stupid stats or something.

Cause lets compare. Bears have supposedly 4000 vit+ at level 80. At level 40, CM is a level 40 dungeon if it scales down perfectly, bears will have 2k vit here. Each point of vit is supposedly 10 hp at 80.

This means at level 80 a bear should have well over 40k hp. Thats more then double the base highest HP in the game. That means with just Stats a bear should be able to tank twice as hard as a warrior.

But those were stats from the wiki, my level 60 rangers bear has 2.5k vit in LA with 30 specced into BM, thats still a whopping 25k hp, So why does my bear die in dungeons in a few hits? Why cant he thrash anything? At his hp/Toughness(He has 1050) he is tankier then a warrior of my level, so why is his life lost in dungeons so often? not even to AoE! but to trash mobs!

This tells me, Pet stats dont work as player stats do, and dont tell me the full story they should. As with the stats the pets have, they should be able to EASILY tank without problems, but time and time again fail to do so.

All this is assuming the pets have ZERO base hp, and just run off vit. if they have some base HP, that means my bear should have well over 25k hp.

An Argument Against Balanced Classes

“You can’t achieve perfect balance” isn’t a reason to stop trying to balance things.

Just like “You can’t stop all crime” isn’t a reason to shut down all police stations worldwide and embrace anarchy.

I dont think OP or anyone means it that extreme, I think its more along the lines of, “Dont get stressed over something that will never be obtained”

Dont chase that “Balance” dream. Still try, but dont do it just because people are crying nonstop. Sometimes its best to accept that a class is bad and play it cause you enjoy it. if you enjoy winning then simply play the class that wins.

An Argument Against Balanced Classes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dice Dragon.4326

Dice Dragon.4326

You cant balance. Atleast in my opinion. its proven by any other game on the market, their will always be a build better then others, A “perfect” build if you will.

Classes are no diffrent. Some classes will simply be better. Fighting games are evident of this. But tiers are not the be all end all, Simply play better and master the tools given to you, and you can beat people.

“Well he is everything I have but better!”

Yeah you can say then when skill is perfectly equal, but there is no proof of skill. Since that is something that is an opinion in a sense, Warriors op? Play better noob. They have stronger tools, but that does not mean skill is always equal, assuming it is will have you lose from the start cause you overestimate your enemy.

GW2, misunderstood game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dice Dragon.4326

I agree that its misunderstood.

“Aye yo guild wars, why u only have 10 skills? wow has more this is dumb”

The original Guildwars had 8. And one was for Rez sig in most cases, leaving you with 7 to work with.

Why does everyone compare this game to WoW? Sorry, but this game is more like GW1 with a bit of monster hunter tacked on. if you dont suck at this game, you can litterally avoid all damage of boss mobs by simply dodging. In monster hunter, all you had to do was get out of the way. its the same in this game. Giant AoE world boss killing people with his AoE? kittening roll bro. it has invinciable frames.

Dungeons are badly designed imo though, with pubs, it feels like the basic enemies are more dangerous then the bosses. You can kite the boss all day, and dodge his attacks with practice. Stopping the zerg from the “trash” mobs, in most cases it feels like the “trash” mobs do more damage then the boss, and you cant dodge them forever like bosses.

A much closer game to GW2 imo is Terra online. Eitherway, GW2 has some balance issues, but once those are worked out, this game is set. For all the people who didnt play Guildwars 1, I think you should prolly find a diffrent game imo. Cause its called guildwars 2 for a reason. Its the continuation of a game much before your time im sure.

is the use of programmable buttons considert botting by the community?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dice Dragon.4326

Dice Dragon.4326

I might be confused, but is setting the button to do more then one stroke really that big of a deal?

so you set it to do 2-5 on SB for example, you dont gain any advantage since the game still has to process you dont all the actions, and you have plenty of time to do it without the hardware. all it does is make your life easier. Its not even botting, Macros should be legit as long as you are not doing it while afk.

To me that is the diffrence in botting/macroing. Doing it while AFK is clearly wrong, but just doing it to make your play time easier/more enjoyable? its harmless. Programming a burst combo macro isnt even broken, since players can do it without the use of hardware. The hardware/macro gives the user no inherent advantage other then ease of use, which should be a non issue.

But thats just my opinion on the matter. But doing anything while AFK is botting and is scum tier.

You can even make them work in pvp as some above posts mentioned, but you actually have to essentially be the support for the pet, notthe other way around, and that leaves ALOT of issues as it basicly means you are stuck with AI limitations, but thats not to say it cant work.

I’d love to be able to have my pet stay on a target that I send it to instead of attacking what I attack.”

You can do this. if you hit F1, the pet will lock on to what ever target you have selected regardless if you change or not. Pets are actually able to be controlled pretty well if you take the time to learn how to micro them.

I hoped ranged pets would be the answer for my pets exploding all over the place in PvP. My problem is the projectile speed is so insanely slow that if the target is not completely immobile, they automatically dodge it. If you’ve ever PvP’ed you know how rarely someone stands completely still… our pets need serious love. So do our weapons. So do our spirits. So do our trait lines. Oh, did I mention opening strike is still broken?

By ranged pets you mean the 900 feet ones that still want to run into melee to attack?

I thought this would help, too, but instead was disappointed. Again. The F2 response time, like all pets, was atrocious.

I want to see a response, too, but I feel that anything short of fixing the class itself isn’t going to satisfy me now.

hit f3, and when they get back to you, hit F1 again, they should then be fine. as for pvp… Thats just a huge problem that I cant really tell you how to fix. Pets will ALWAYS suck in pvp imo.

I dont agree on pets. Pets are so dumb its terribad. I totally hate them in instances. On other side i have full geared war and ranger. I must say for just about anything my war is far far better. That kitten me off a lot coz i really like ranger class.

I was having this problem actually, but I found using ranged pets GREATLY improved my ability to stay alive, and my pets. Spiders and Devourers attack at a 900 range, which is good enough to not get hit by AoEs, and they do decent dps, Devourers also are armored as kitten, and tank better then bears imo! And spiders have loads of utility, Jungle spider I think has a instant f2 that makes it stun on its next attack for a huge 2 seconds, and it uses an immoble and a poison feild, all of which help the team outside of it being able to DPS at range.

The main problem I think I have with pets is that, with beast mastery spec, I feel like my pet is really strong, but without it, it seems really weak. Forcing you to spec it if you want the pet to do something more then just get squished.

Honestly i wish to play ranger with dual swords, or sword and dagger. I wish to try use LB and use my pet. Fact is none of this is viable build for anything. Ill give u example. I wanted to try different styles but the fact is B was only one that was working and now ranger is dead. So even if they fix SB, will that be all ? Im sorry but other classes have awesome choices. Think war for example. Dual axe, Gs, axe and shield , all of this are awesome. Why does it have to be that rangers are so terribad ?

Imo, this has to do with “quality of life” issues. Swords kit lets them perma cripple, and has a kittenload of “get out the way” abilities. if a warrior is about to hit you with a huge truckload of damage, you can use the viper skill to duck behind him, avoid damage, and poison him. This is what they want it to do, sadly due to bugs like positioning on that move, and the “root” bug of the normal chain, sword has issues that prevent it from being a strong contender.

The third Swing of the GS chain gives you evade frames as well. Meaning if you are auto attacking a mob in pve for example, 33% of the time you are in evade frames. Problem is your damage is kittenall due to quality of life issues, GS could be like sword, and have a bunch of defense and mobility IF it had some tiny little changes.

Long bow has alot of damage imo, the problem is its CDs are kitten high, if rapid fire took 3 seconds instead of 5 with a 6 second CD, it would be such a stronger weapon. Another problem is it does not auto attack past a certain range meaning you miss out on alot of range you could of had unless you wanna spam “1” to get it.

Im pretty pleased with the offhand choices for ranger, Daggers stab skill could use a damage buff, but other then that, its legit. It gives you even MORE evade frames. Letting you dodge attacks without stopping the offensive.

Pets are really good if you know how to use them, and use a pet that is right for the situation.

Middle class is the average, its a decent place to be. poverty sucks, but atleast you know you suck, and you dont feel bad because you know you are poor, the government looks out for you cause of it. lets say Guardians are middle class, and Necro is poor, Ranger is in the worst place. They are inbetween these two. They need just a slight nudge to be decent, but are not bottom of the barrel, so the bossman dont care.

Simpley put, games will always have classes better then otehrs, its a simple fact. But most of whats limiting ranger is quality of life and or bugs.

If you could swap your ranger for any other class, would you?

I have tried the other classes, and I dont like them at all. Ranger is the most fun for me. And personally, I love the learning curve of the pet. I was starting to feel like pets were good, but then I did some dungeons, and found my pet was dying, so I had to learn to adapt, and I did. And my pets life, and my own life went up Drasticly. Ranger takes alot of skill to really master, and I like that.

I will play ranger regardless of buffs/nerfs simply because I love the concept of being two units at once. Cause thats basicly what a ranger is, two units at once. Two sides of the same coin.

If I were to change ranger, id give it a bit more… Flair? The class currently relys to much on its normal attacks with a shortbow. Sword might be good if they fix the “root” bug, GS could use some damage tweaks, if GS got like 20% more damage, it would be a real contender imo, as its kit is REALLY good.

What Rangers Need

“Actually, what Rangers need is a new option to play without their pet and gain a different profession mechanic to compensate.

Pets will always seem lower in responsiveness and weaker as a whole.

Because it demands you control two units at once to play your profession optimally, whereas other professions’ summons are simpler units that don’t demand a constant micro of their actions."

I dunno, I played DotA for years so this is not a problem at all for me, Pets feel pretty responsive on the F1/F3 keys, if I see champion Kol getting ready to smash with an AoE, I simply hit F3, and watch my pet run back to me, then send him back when the AoE is done with.

And I think alot of people complain about pets because they dont spec beast mastery, I have specced beast mastery and my pet is sick damage wise and tank wise. I use a drake/(Bird or dog or cat) combo of pet line up, and I do fine. In high stress situations your pet MAY die, but thats why you let it stay out till its got only a fraction of its life, then swap out to a new pet. Suddenly you dont have the death swap time penalty, and you have quickness and other fun stuff.

As for the SB nerfs, I dunno, I think you just gotta learn to cope. Everyone says they loved the bleed stacks, but since im power/pet attribute specced, I just used it for the speed, and ability to dodge kitten with well timed 3s, and it had alot of control such as a cripple AND a daze.

There is no balance between weapons

>auto attack skill only

there is your problem. I can kill the same mob with a LB FASTER aslong as all my CDs are up when the engage happens, HOWEVER, longbow really suffers once you blow all your skills, if Barrage had a lower cooldown, Longbow would be dabes. I use SB/LB so I basicly, LB start off, barrage->Hunters shot->Rapidfire then swap to SB till CD is up and swap back.

Now, Melee weapons are the ones that are skewed. Sword feels clunky but ok damage wise. Dagger off hand is kitten. Axe offhand is pretty sweet. But generally melee is outclassed by ranged by a longshot.

Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

I have a level 80 ranger … before people wonder, the shortbow NEEDED a nerf.

Probably 90% of ALL bots are RANGERS using SHORTBOW. Why do you think that is? There are literally PACKS of them running in every zone. Why? Because it was TOO GOOD. When it is so good that it becomes the bot standard you had better expect the balance bat to fall your way.

Be honest … DPS wise you could easily get away with a Bear and skill 1 (auto attack) and do nothing else and down almost anything. Oh no we might have to work 2-5 into the rotation now. Anyone crying about a nerf should be forced to play an Ele for a month for perspective.

Because the Ranger is the only profession with a permanent pet and the short bow is the only viable Ranger weapon and it is a ranged weapon. It has absolutely nothing to do with it being overpowered.

I know it isn’t something you want to do but … I did say “be honest”. Gold sellers are in it to make REAL LIFE MONEY. There is a reason they were choosing the ranger. Any class can be used to bot (pet or no pet). The Ranger was just too good to pass up … like it or not. No amount of spin will get you out of that logic trap. Sorry, if that helps any

uhm no, ever play a ranger? They are very…. “Boring” as some find them, imo, the term here is “simple” they get alot of damage just by simply sicing the pet on the target and letting auto attack 1 do the work with a shortbow. This is how most rangers played. shortbow 2-5 give us utility/kiting, which when botting you dont need, and for normal above world pve, for the most part you also dont need.

So they chose something that need the least amount of bot programming to do. Im pretty sure a warrior bot that uses its abilities is MUCH stronger, but most bots are not smart enough to properly use skills. So whatever is the most simple is what they pick. Ranger is one of the most simple classes in the game.
