Fresh 80 gear question

What runes should I be looking into for armor and weapons? Right now I just stick to Air in my sword and accuracy/force into pistol and fire in my sb. I’m pretty lost with what to put into armor, though.

I saw that Nika’s set has a full superior infiltrators rune set. That seems pretty nice. And that looks like a good gear set to pick up.

For PVE yes pure berserker is best. Traits should be 30/30/0/0/10 for max DPS as well. Use d/d for bosses (CnD->BS->1 auto chain->repeat) and Sw/p for trash mobs (black powder OP). For utilities, smokescreen pretty much never leaves my bar. For your other 2 slots signet of agility, shadow refuge, shadow step, scorpion wire for pulling, assassin signet, are all good.

For armor/weapons/trunks exotics are perfectly fine for now. Ascended armor really isn’t needed unless your doing fractals 40+. All exotics of the same level and star type (ie berserkers, knights, Valkyrie, rabid) will have the exact same stats as any other exotic in the game. It doesn’t matter how you acquire it, as long as theyre the same level. People get t3 for the looks, not the stats

So, this is a super noob question but, trunks? What are those?

Hey guys, so I’m about to have my first level 80 character, and I was wondering how I should go about beginning to gear him. Right now I’m doing CoF rubs to get that beautiful flame legion armor, but most of what I’m doing is for aesthetics.

I know berserker gear is the most common build, especially for dungeon runs where dps is king. So that’s mostly the angle I’m going for. But what do I use to hold me over until the long road to making an ascended weapon/armor? Do I just go into the TP and buy a cheap berserkers sword/dagger/pistol and whatnot? Or are there exotics I need to keep my eyes open for?

And for armor, do I just pick up the T3 cultural, or what? Because from what I can tell, some of the dungeon armies have better stats, like the CoF armor?

Thanks for any help, it’s all appreciated.

So, because I just started pvp and I was really excited that the arah set only costs 15000 glory, I won’t be able to get it now.. And I was really close to having that set unlocked I.y wardrobe for pve!?

Man.. Way to kick a guy when he’s down.

Unless you are a new player, you had all the chances got get the gear. well that was your option and you did not exercise it. Also getting the arah set was actually easier than getting most of the sets.

Yes, I’m expressing the opinion of a new player who just yesterday realized the arah set was easy to get. Now I’ll only
Be able to get it at 80.

Unless it’s possible to get 10,000 glory in one night of WvW for a level 45, I’ll be pretty sad I missed that armor skin.

Glory in WvW? what?

Haven’t played any WvW. Thought you got glory from it.

Super new to the game- low level PvE question

Hey everyone. So I played GW2 for a really short stint and then got super hooked on league of legends, and now I’m back! But, I’m still pretty new to the game, and there’s apt I don’t understand. So here are a few questions for ya:

I’m level 45, and dear lord dungeons are difficult. I’m trying to do the story of the catacombs (and a big problem is people keep leaving) but I just feel useless. I hang back and use my SB and detonate combo fields with my blast finisher and whatnot. I’m super squishy so if I get close to a champion I’m pretty much done for. This is especially a problem in the fight with the two champions that are stronger when they’re together. They area light night storm damage just kills me. Outright. No hope for survival.

So to be fair, I’ve been 100% focusing on precision and power, to try to get my
Most out of crit and backstab damage. So do I need to redo most of my build to be more survival oriented and maybe focus on power and toughness?

Also, and I know this is a tender subject on thieves… But seriously, how do I remove conditions. Everything that does it just seems to have such a long cool down.

Well, those are the big questions I’m wondering. Any help is greatly appreciated. And no, I’m not going to abandon my thief at any time. I want to do a ton of pvp with him eventually. But I’d like to be able to help my team in dungeons and whatnot, too.

D/d and SB thief, deadly arts vs shadow arts

Right, so that’s an option but wouldn’t the critical strike tree be really detrimental to miss out on, if I am going for a d/d crit build?

Like Elan said, that tree seems really, really useful. And where do people pull points from to put 10 in deadly arts? Which right now, seems to be a tree I might skip. BUT, my concern is that my base power could be really low, and those crits won’t hit very hard, even if they hit often.

The whole point of not taking Critical Strikes is because of your sigil of intelligence. Swap to your second dagger set in stealth and backstab for 6-8k. You’re also tanky as kitten.

Ohhhh. That went way over my head, my bad. Noob probs.
That seems like a setup for strictly pvp? Losing the utility of the SB seems like a problem. But I will keep that build in mind for down the road (lvl 22 still. Woo!)

Something like this would grant you mug and increased back/side damage, but it would be at the cost of vitality. That said, you end up with a lot of condition removal and blind on stealth.

Or

5% less damage from the back or sides, but you have about 1000 more HP and easy access to swiftness and a huge speed boost. Can even trade out some trinkets for more Zerker if you really wanted to.

Haven’t had a chance to look over them, but I like the idea of build 2. Thanks for your input!

Now, I’m still quite new to this game, but I’m slowly learning new things and catching on. It’s been a blast so far. And a lot of you have been super helpful on these forums, answering my noobish questions. So here’s one more for you:

While researching some d/d critical builds, I seem to find a lot of mix between people who put upwards of 25 into deadly arts, and some people who sometimes put 30 into shadow arts. But almost no build includes them both.

So my (noobish) question is this: how do you decide between deadly arts and shadow arts for a crit build? It seems the stealth utility offered from the shadow arts tree is invaluable. But I see the obvious bonus you receive from the deadly arts tree. So what are your thoughts on these two?

(Also, I’m at work and I’ve had to wa away from the message a few times, sorry if it sounds really scatterbrained. I’ll try to clarify later if I must,)

I’ve used a think all of the weapon combinations, I just don’t fully understand things like condition damage and the like… So I don’t really know e ins and outs of the different weapon sets and character builds. But just from utility alone, I like the s/p and d/p the most. D/d is super fun, but it doesn’t seem as powerful. Also, I can’t find a second dagge that’s very good xD

I know! I was beginning to wonder if anyone would answer me.

Anyway, being really weak until ~lvl 50 seems pretty daunting. But I guess I’m not opposed to sticking it out. I think the thing that will keep me going is just how darn cool the thief is. I really like the medium armor in this game, and that’s what’s kind of keeping me away from Mesmer, which I think uses light.

But thank you so much for your input. I suppose I’ll stick with sword/pistol for now, with a backup short bow. And looking at the traits in a character builder is a great idea. I don’t understand why they are hidden from the beginning, anyway.

As much as I like pvp, I do have league of legends for that. I suppose I’m looking for more of a pve experience with gw2.

I’d love to hear some more input, though!

So, I’m a super new player to gw2. I’ve been playing for just a few days now, and I’d like a little bit of guidance.

First, I can’t really decide which weapon set I’d like to use. I think I enjoy d/p as the most fun, but the utility of the 2 ability on s/p is really good. And that offhand blind is great, as much as i would enjoy d/d.
Anyway, I’d just like some insight on the pros and cons of the different weapon sets.

Second, traits are a mystery to me. I don’t really know what I’m doing there, and I just hit level 12, so I’m fresh into them and very lost.

Lastly, reading these boards are pretty discouraging for a thief! Everyone seems to think that they are not viable endgame, or even as good at any other class at doing anything. I’m really interested in the Mesmer class, but I don’t want to reroll my thief, because I’m just playing for fun and I really enjoy the thief flavor. So can anyone expand for me what a thief really excels at over some other classes?

Thank you so much, everyone. Sorry if these are common questions, I don’t find the search function really helpful, but I assure you I tried.
