I may try out the GS.
to add: my mesmer is only level 20, So i’ve been doing all of this in spvp for practice. I’m not a far of the limited stats, but it’s good practice.
I assume zerker stats for spvp is the way to go?
hey everyone, I just recently started trying to play a shatter Mesmer and it’s been a nightmare so far. I’m still pretty new to mesmers, but I just can’t get the hang of this.
right now I’m playing a 2/2/0/0/6 build with a S/P and staff. the staff doesnt seem to fit, as I almost never switch to it.
my biggest problems are:
I-leap = after the patch, it just doesn’t feel like it flows well. i can’t tell when I can swap places with it, and I feel like the immobilization never actually procs for me.
with this problem, I can never land blurred frenzy.
also, I can’t get the hang of producing clones at the right time. they seem to die immediately when they’re made and I don’t get to shatter them.
I really just need some general advice on this build. and of course, other builds suggestions are great.
Steal bugs out if combo’d with any movement skill (heartseeker, flanking strike) this needs to be addressed as any good thief cannot play properly with this bug.
If you cannot play without using broken mechanics then you are not a good thief…
Vavume, it’s common knowledge that any shadow step ability (shadow step, infiltrators signet, steal) can be used while channeling another ability and not interrupt it. This is not a “broken mechanic” and this bug is a big deal. No need for you to fly off the handle, you’re sounding quite ignorant.
I admit that with the addition of many new revealed rebuffs, D/D may struggle a little. But all in all, it’s still largely unchanged. I don’t think the black powder change is going to affect much, honestly. But I DO think that the new revealed abilities will likely push some people in that direction, being able to blind your opponent while you’re revealed.
I’m obviously talking about WvW rather than spvp. I don’t like not using stealth, so I don’t bother with taking spvp seriously.
Hey guys, thief main here, and I don’t often visit the Mesmer forums. So hello!
I made a Mesmer alt a while ago because they’ve always seemed awesome, and it was my second choice to thief when I was making my first character. Well, I made it just to play around in spvp and dear lord I’m bad at it.
So here’s what I’m looking for from you nice people (pretty please):
A fun build! I don’t need it to be viable in tpvp, as I’ll just be playing around in spvp to see if I want to make my Mesmer a real 80.
Some reference videos to show me how to not be bad. Because I’m bad.
Honestly, I’d like to try out this pu Mesmer everyone is always complaining about, but a full glkittenter build sounds fun too.
Thanks everyone!
I really don’t mind at all. I don’t do any elitist pve content because it bores the heck out of me. I do mainly fun whatever I want pve and WvW/PvP. You guys (not YOU guys but the dungeon running crews) can go stack around corners with someone else.
Hey guys, I don’t frequent the necro forums, so I’m sorry if this is common knowledge, but can I get a link to a decent condition pve build? It doesn’t have to be speed run optimized or any crap like that, just something decently effective and fun.
Thanks so much. I’m thinking about making a necro myself and I don’t want EVERY character I have to be full zerker whatever max dps nothing special.
Personally, I think it would be a really fun addition, but my biggest point is: I just want a dang GARDEN.
I mean, I have a cooking skill. Why can’t I choose to plant things in a convenient place to harvest for the recipes I want to make. And a small pen for a few animals for meats.
Anyway, I know it’s something that’s not on top of anet’s priority list, but this thought crossed my mind and I don’t think many people have brought this up yet.
Not too sure if your information is out of date, or mine, but I’m pretty sure Nigjtblade uses sigils of Air/Force on his daggers and Runes of the Pack, not scholar. and often uses a S/D as his second weapon set. And your equines is a little odd to me, but it would totally work.
Nightblade did put up a Cloak and Dagget tips & tricks video on YouTube, be sure to check that out.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about. A link to any information you’re referencing could be helpful.
Not my style, but I think you did a really awesome job.
All I can do is have flashbacks to Sword Art Online.
/shudder
Where you murder your spouse to steal everything in their join storage system?
Seriously, that was one of the worst episodes. (Love the show, though.)
Thus enters the Phoenix pistol skin. Kitten enormous and cool as hell.
What in the world are you talking about? Do you not realize that S/D is the top tier thief build in SPvp right now?
Right. Weaponsmithing deals with Melee weapons, while huntsman deals with ranged. It’s not a fun situation, but if you’re planning on making both you have to have them both at 500. It’s pretty nice for a few other classes that dual wield weapons from the same discipline.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned yet, but at levels 35, 60, and 80 you gain access to a new tier of cultural armor from a vendor in your capital city. So there are three little blue helmets on your map in divinity’s reach. These are your cultural armor vendors. Quite a lot of people run around with these armor skins. (And more often then not, they buy the armor for the looks, and transmute the skins onto armies with more appealing stats.)
This is a great place to start, with many many more options opening up at level 80.
My only advice here is regarding your personal happiness:
I know you’ve worked extremely hard to gather these materials for
So long, and I think the best thing you can do right now is budget $50-$100 over the next few weeks and just convert gems to gold and buy back your progress. The happiness is well worth the price.
WHEW! That last picture is super cool. I’d love to see a male version.
2 big things: you NEED fire and air sigils on your sword and dagger. This is what makes up for the loss in dps. When these proc together there’s a huge spike in dps.
Second, along with that vigor and loads of evasion, you’re free to go Zerk stats and still stay alive.
I’m not really looking for a full lockdown build, just a reliable set of interrupts and it looks like p/p with the sleight of hand trait will do that. That would be 3 interrupts that need good timing to be effective, and you have to manage the cool downs on them.
It shouldn’t be too hard. Thank you.
I get that you’re used to having so many interrupts from your Mesmer, but if you want to succeed as a thief, P/P and interrupting aren’t the way to go. Though a well timed X/P #4 can change the tide.
Here’s my small input: I main my thief. I love the class, and I’ll never let it go. But I play game where I really struggle against a bunker engi or guard, or I get too eager to get into a teamfight and the errant AOE damage from the enemies that aren’t even focusing me kills me. Sometimes I go to take out a high priority target and both of my sigils proc and they go down in an instant, sometimes I’m not so lucky and the ferocity nerf really shows, so I have a hell of a time chipping through their defense.
And after a long day of having to constantly outplay any opponent I come across (which feels sooooo good. Every time.) I’ll occasionally jump onto my warrior and think about the following:
Running str runes and zerk stats, I still have nearly 2x the hp of my thief. I can dance right in the middle of a teamfight and my passive healing keeps me going (and I don’t even have to think about real damage mitigation.) and after all that, I’ll just SLAM my opponents every chance I get with an 8-10k eviscerate. That’s way more damage than I ever do on my full glass zerker thief.
I guess I got a little side tracked here, because I know
We’re Talking about S/D thieves and I mainly do dagger stuff, but what I’m getting at is this: I wouldn’t mind seeing the S/D play style nerfed (mostly through changes in the sigils.) but if that happens, we need higher backstab damage, because that’s all we’d have left.
I also have never really noticed any sort of armor glow one heavy T1 cultural armor. I belive I’m using one if the midnight series for the large portions (a red/maroon hue), white gold, and another gold color. So no super dark colors, but they do have dark spots just from the natural armor fade. I’ll try to post a picture later today as an example. But I’ve never had it glow.
I can’t really speak from experience, since I don’t love S/D, and if I play it I do use the acrobatics build. But I suppose maybe with the signet that increases initiative regen, you could have more flanking strikes available.
2/0/0/6/6 is ok for spvp, it’s too evasive/has low dmg for wvw. Change the traits to suit your playstyle?
I believe the other well accepted S/D build it 2/6/0/0/6. You’ll definitely have more damage this way. It could be what you’re looking for.
I’m assuming English isn’t your first language, but I think in your first combo you mean you pre-cast flanking strike so you have access to larcenous strike?
Anyway, I’m kind of confused about your use of CnD/stealth. I get that CnD does
Decent damage, but if you’re going to bother using the CnD/steal gap closer you might as well use the stun the AA has from the sword, and then use 3 to rip boons.
Well, tequila is made from agave.
…which is a Cactus. Http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_tequilana
So… did you even read this?
it’s not a cactus.
Well, tequila is made from agave.
Awesome. Thanks for the input.
Kinda sad. It really feels like a waste of time running around empty maps looking for a fight. And god forbid you LOSE that fight and you’re all the way back.
But in all seriousness, how do you roam?
I play on Henge of Denravi and maybe I just don’t play at peak times, but I got into WvW to roam with my thief, and I just cannot find anyone. It’s either a Zerg or nothing.
World Completion first, due to the WvW requirement. You may have to wait a few weeks for your server to change colors, giving you access to areas that would be nearly impossible otherwise. Even if you don’t start with PvE world completion, start working on the WvW portion as soon as you can and watch for when your server takes over difficult areas. Using a thief is a huge advantage, as you can use stealth and SB #5 to get around really quickly and check off every camp behind enemy lines without a problem.
When to get the precursor is kinda unclear. It depends on whether you expect prices to go up (in which case you’d buy asap) or down (buy at the end). I prefer the precursor first as it essentially sets my goal and pushes me through getting the rest. I bought Spark when starting Incinerator at around 900g, and thought I was paying too much. I got lucky :x
Aside from those, get your clovers before your T6 materials, since when you roll for clovers you’ll get some T6 in the process. The rest is really up to you. Obby shards and badges are easily farmed, especially now with megaservers Balthazar is often captured through most of the day. The plat/mith/ori can be farmed daily while you focus on other goals. I recently did incinerator myself and didn’t have to buy any metals to complete that part of the legendary.
Can you give some insight on farming obby shards? With the recent changes to karma farming, I’m having trouble finding up to date info.
Here is a pic of my Thief
Hey btw what armor is that?
Looks to me like t3 mask, caudicus’s manor shoulders (I have another mirror set that I think I got somewhere in the personal story, but I dont remember what they’re called)
Strider coat, whispers boots.
I’m not sure about the legs, as they’re just black. But I thought the gloves were accursed vambraces, but I dont think those have the little spikes on top. So i’m not sure.
Then I would feel even worse when I backstab the wrong Mesmer.
Hey there, so I’m a semi experienced player, no expert by any means. But I’ve been playing without a guild this whole time. I have 1 level 80 thief, and a few alts I’m working on. But here’s what I want out of the game, and subsequently, out of the guild I’m looking to join:
I like dungeon runs. I’d love to do any dungeon, with by group, as long as they’re patient and willing to teach/instruct. I’m not good at Arah, but I’m looking to learn.
I play a good deal of spvp, so a PvX guild is necessary. I just invested in a few different sets for WvW roaming so I’d like a small group to roam with as well.
I’ve never done fractals, but again, I’m interested in learning.
To be picky, I don’t want a HUGE guild. I want to get to know the people I’m playing with.
I’ve also not done many world events, and I’m interested in doing those as well.
Basically I’m looking for a guild that will be fun to play with, and also help me better myself in this game.
That’s mostly it. I’m interested in hearing from you all.
Thank you! I get enough flaming from playing a D/D thief, so I don’t mind.
Hello Mesmer forums! I’ve recently started playing my Mesmer again and I’d like to take him into spvp for fun. But, I’m a really bad Mesmer! So what a noob friendly PVP build I could learn the class with?
Note: this will be in hot join. So I don’t mind being stealthed or whatever, I don’t need to contest points seriously, I’m just looking for fun.
I’m not sure what’s worse, the QQ thread of the day about how someone lost to a thief so they want them removed from the game, or the people who feel the need to decide that the 2/0/0/6/6 build is or isn’t sizer’s.
He popularized it. That’s why it’s called his build. Just deal with it. I don’t care about this other random kitten who wants his name on this build.
Hop off his private region
You said it yourself, it never used to be good. Who cares if you’re the guy who’s been playing the build for a year, it was never good. Now that it’s in the meta, it’s there because sizer brought it there (oh wait, that’s what meta means. someone who has publicity attached to their name started doing it and it trickled down to the masses, holy kitten, guess it’s his build).
You must be his lover or something. Not sure why you feel the need to defend him so much. Not judging or anything. It is cute.
Sizer never said it was his build, he’s not the one crying over it’s name so I’m no actually defending anyone. But, there have been other posts claiming “it’s my build I played it when it wasn’t good”

Pot, meet kettle.
It seems you missed what I was saying, or you don’t understand the pot/kettle idiom.
What you all aren’t understanding is what it means for something to be “in the meta” it better yet, how things actually end up there.
For a much better example, look at the much larger online game, league of legends. When dyrus uses a new top lane build in the LCS, it doesn’t matter AT ALL who has used it before him. He’s on a stage, in a tournament, in front of hundreds of thousands of people. So when the rest of the community that play X champion starts using this build, it’s because dyrus popularized it.
NOW BRINGING THIS TO CURRENT EVENTS:
Sizer used this build in a tournament that was popular enough in the guild wars community that when he did well, people started referring to it as his build. It’s as simple as that.
This is what the meta is, deal with it. If you want to shake things up. Why don’t you join the tournament of legends and use an unpopular build.
for faksake because of these guys the thief class look like a beat up class,STOP THE QQ AND STOP THE NERF we have no more things to sacrifice for your QQing.
Honestly im sick of ppl like u, thiefs are OP. Get 10 thiefs and roam wvw who can stop you? even 30 people wont beat it. No more invis is what I say
And the people of this forum are sick of YOU and your terrible attitude. You’re just whining about another class being able to stealth because that means you can’t see them to kill them in three hits.
What you’re failing to see is that without stealth, all we have is high mobility and a sword. I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I didn’t buy guild wars 2 because the Fencer class looked cool.
Here’s a little help, OP: find some videos of THIEVES fighting other thieves. You’ll notice something.. When they go invisible, we know where they’re going. Because we know the mindset and we can predict their intentions. I know this is a little more obscure of a combat maneuver than a simple skill rotation, but just try to use your brain and ponder on that.
Haven’t watched your video yet, as I’m at work. But I agree with the above poster, if you’re making a build guide, you should definitely show how to use it.
I mean this with nothing but respect, so don’t get me wrong. Just pointing out that people aren’t interested in someone standing around with their hero panel open the entire video. Show us some fights!

Hey this is a great idea! Also, I think someone should
Incorporate a ‘skipping technique’ section, because I’m really bad at getting a lot of stealth time out of blasting smoke screen.
In sPvP I am assuming you are using power of inertia and strength runes. Not sure why you are not getting more might. Signets of power? Thrill of the crime? Larcenous Strike on other might users may augment your numbers.
WvW can still be played with S/D. Basic difference is you want 6 points in shadow arts for survivability. Embrace and Rejuvanation are staples against the condi classes that roam often. D/D with Scholar Runes is actually pretty good in WvW but you probably have to slot Signet of Shadows for speed. #1 runes are going to be Runes of Strength but cheap options are Speed/Pack/Hoelbrak/Lyssa/Ogre. I prefer D/P roaming solo it has much more utility and the blind field helps keep you alive.
Yup, I believe that’s the SPVP setup I’m using. Maybe I’m just not noticing that my might stacks are actually shooting up when i’m in the midst of a fight.
and awesome! i may have to try out scholars and D/D, that would save me money on a second WvW set of armor. But i may have to try out a D/P setup too. I’m sure they’re both fun.
a small preface: all of my pvp experience is in SPvP, I have not yet delved into WvW (more on this later) so my first question is strictly for my spvp experiences:
Question one: obvioulsy the strong meta right now for thieves has to do with S/D and keeping up might stacks. Well, I’ve had a lot of success with this type of build but I always hear people saying they have no problem keeping up 12-17 might stacks when they’re not even trying, and 20+ when they are! what am I messing up with there, because I always feel like I have around ~7. unless i’m just not paying attention in the thick of things, But I’d like some insight.
Question two: So as I said; i’ve not yet dove into WvW. I’d like to change that.
BUT, I’d really like to utilize stealth more in WvW. obviously in Spvp stealth is kind of looked down on because when you’re invisible, you’re not contesting a point. So i don’t think i want to do S/D in WvW, but do people still use D/D or is it dead? how about D/P? is that enough stealth? I do like having easy access to great blinds, though.
The real question here is this: For WvW is D/D still at least decent? and what (CHEAP!) runes should I be using for a WvW newbie? I have scholars right now for PVE. I’ve heard that runes of speed do a decent job and are super cheap.
All help is appreciated, sorry if that post was amazingly scatter-brained.
TL;DR why can’t I keep really high might stacks in SPVP with my S/D thief?
What’s a good starting setup for a WvW newb that wants to utilize stealth?
thank you all!
I for one am glad you can’t cast most things while
Jumping, because seriously it was SO UGLY that everyone on WoW was JUMPING ALL OF THE TIME.
It looked so bad.
I’d love a NA invite! I won’t be on for 2 weeks (vacation!) but I’m a pretty avid dungeon runner that’s kind of obsessed with dungeon armor and whatnot. But I need a lot of help learning Arah and I’ve yet to do any fractals. So I’d love some mentoring!
I’ve tried the str runes with might stacking, and unless I’m not building correctly, I have a heck of a time keeping enough night stacks to dish out a lot of damage. So I suppose I could use some clarification on that build, and maybe some alternatives?
Heyo everyone. I’m wondering what kind of lvl 80 trinkets I should be looking for/how to get them? Some people say ascended trinkets aren’t very hard to get, but I don’t even really know where to begin here. All help is appreciated!
Is there any chance that your glow colour is pink? It sounds like it.
is that a character creation option? because i’ve already used a makeover kit on him to see if i had something in the hair set to pink and I did not.
also, it’s not always there. just sometimes.
heyo, so i recently started a second character and it’s a sylvari mesmer. Two things that have gone wrong so far are:
1- i know the sylvari suffer from some weird rendering issues with all of the layered coors and highlights, but sometimes my white hair turns mostly pink, and the same for some of the veins in my face/body. I’m playing on a 13" macbook pro so the graphics arent set very high at all.
2- after reaching level 8, i did not unlock the level 8 utility slot. I’ve used 3 tomes of knowledge that i had in my bank. maybe that’s the problem and it will unlock at level 11?
