Just hit 80; critique my PvE build.

I just hit 80 on my first character, an engineer, and this is the build I put together for group and solo PvE:

In Inventions I pick two of: (I) Protective Shield, (II) Explosive Descent, (V) Energized Armor, (VI) Cloaking Device, and (VIII) Power Shoes depending on the situation. Gear is Knight’s with Berserker’s rifle, Divinity runes, and Sigil of Strength.

My goal was solid single-target and AoE damage without sacrificing too much in the way of survivability. I feel I’ve managed to fit in a good deal of group support as well in the form of CC, vulnerability stacking, combo fields, minor AoE healing and condition removal, and misc conditions. The lack of swiftness or any condition removal outside the Healing Turret cooldown is a bit of a problem, but Power Shoes can help a bit with the first issue at least. What do you guys think?

Stop whining the ultra engie has landed

I’m inclined to agree with those expressing skepticism about how effective this build really is, but hey, I haven’t tested it. What I can say is that builds like this are nothing new; for instance, something like:

(copy/paste link as always)

has been floating around for months for engis that want to bunker in sPvP or tPvP, or who just want to be hard to kill in WvW. On paper, I really can’t see how your build has any advantage over the one I just posted, which seems to have much better synergies: power from toughness and healing, good protection uptime, rifle as opposed to pistol with power (and a lack of cond damage/crit), net shot with bombs (not that you’ll really get anyone trying to run away with bombs in any case, but it still helps with landing them), plus a little might stacking as gravy.

While it is always great to see people working on innovating with the engineer, and I do think there is a lot of unexplored building space in this class, I suggest you drop the attitude. Posting like you’re the second coming of engineers and then serving up what appears to be a crappier version of a solid, but typical, engineer bunker build makes it very hard for people to take you and your build seriously. If you really think what you’ve got is something that will revolutionize the way engineers play, you’ve got to back it up with things like gameplay videos, class-by-class breakdown of 1v1 strategies, details on how to handle 1vX situations, and so on.

Haha, okay. Well, this certainly explains why I couldn’t figure out how get all that. I suppose I could reroll, but I’d really rather not do that if I can help it. I’ll keep tinkering and see what I can manage. While I’m here, can anyone recommend a basic solid offensive pvp build? Just for something I can use as a comparison to things I come up with.

Hey there, I’ve recently started this game as an engineer. Somehow I managed to pick the class that is hardest to build effectively, and as I get closer to 80, I’ve played around with a lot of different builds that I’ve found, as well as some of my own design, but so far I haven’t found one I can really stick with. I’m mainly interested in tPvP, sPvP, WvW, and a little light PvE. In general, I’m looking for something that:

- puts out solid damage; I want to be able to take people down
- isn’t too squishy, but doesn’t have to be a bunker build
- doesn’t go wild with too many kits
- works well in various types of PvP and maybe even in low-end PvE with few tweaks
- has solid play in any 1v1 or small-group situation

Does the engineer have something to offer that will fit that bill? I should also mention that I’m not a big fan of the grenades. I don’t dispute their power, but I find them incredibly awkward to use most of the time, even with fast-cast ground targeting.
