Kimbald, I don’t think either that the droprates are quite high and there are a lot of people who were lucky to get 10 skins out of 15 chests and just do not bother to post about it in here. The droprates are very low for sure.

But low droprates here do not necessary mean a lot of unhappy people. I am sure that almost nobody spended hundreds of bugs on keys and got nothing. Most players used keys they found ingame. A lot of people bought some keys additionaly, opened some chests and got over it to other things the event afford.

Some other guys were smart or lucky enough to wait so they decided to buy the skins directly from tm instead of gambling for them.

All of this players are not unhappy despite very low drop rates. And I cant know it for sure but I’m ready to bet that this players are by far the majority.

PS: Kimbald is a funny name too, you know

Kimbald, you assume that the complainers are right and Arena did a great mistake that will ruin the financial income of the GW2 in the future.

But it does not have to be true. It could be exactly the other way around. Maybe the amount of money Anet will not get from disappointed blc-buyers will be completely compensated by the amount of money they get from happy lucky gamblers.

Of course a lot of posts saying that the complainers should shut up are pure emotional and bring nothing constructive to the topic. But the most posts of the complainers are like this to. A lot of emotions = a lot of trolling.

Don’t tell others what they need to have fun, that’s Anet’s job.

And Anet never said the players need to have some skins to have fun. Actually Anet says you can have all the fun without bothering about skins at all.

If a customer thinks he is not getting enough buck for his money he will simply leave, again that’s anet’s problem. No one needs to defend them, they have to do it themselves with good feedback!

The thing is: there are no customer but customers so there are a lot of different complains about same topics. Some of complains are severe, some have huge impact on the customer satisfaction and some others are just silly. And all the fuss about some guys not getting some particular skins they want the way they want is just silly.

If this event does not show you that Nexon got more than a “little” say on what Anet can or cannot do , then i dont know what could.

Because good skins = good items. Right.

This game is about skins , good items are items with good skins.

This game is about having fun. You don’t need skins to have fun in this game because skins don’t influence the game at all. You still cannot have fun without some special skins? As I see it is your problem, not the problem of the game.

you can take the rich kitten approach, throw money at it, and then act as if you’re somehow “better” and your opinion more “valid” just because you happened to have money to burn.

But they are not somehow “better” and do not have any advantages ingame compared to you and me. So it’s everything else but pay-to-win.

rare skins and feeling "unique"?

I totally agree with you, Kimbald, that more skins would be great for GW2. And more different but good “crosscombinable” skins would be even better (come on, Arena, give us some elegant looking swords in addition to all this anime shovels). I think through it is a big bunch of work to create them that can’t be done right now and hope that it will be done during the coming weeks, months and years.

If some of this skins are available to heavy grinding or money spending players only… who cares as long as enough alternatives exist?

I don’t mind having lots of gear in the game that is so hard to get.

I do mind having so little options with gear that isn’t hard to get.

As for WoW, where the diversity is immensely bigger I’m sad to admit. Bit weird that a game like Wow has so much more gear variety than a game like GW2 that is based on the skins as incentive for everything.

I didn’t play WoW long enough to have some solid opinion on this topic so I just believe you. And it is for sure sad and should be (and hopefully will become) better.

But do not forget you are comparing a 7,5 years old game to a 2 months old game. And Blizzard is not a bunch of free working lefties… so GW2 has a good excuse to have less content, don’t you think?

He meant texture are what you play for, so get the top one = win

It’s possible that textures are what HE is playing for, but it is for sure not true for me (and probably the majority of the players). The game by itself do not have ranking based on skins or prices for getting them. So it’s free personal choice to hunt for them.

I could as well set my target to get 1000000000 gems and declare this as winning of GW2. Then GW2 would be P2W to. But it would be not the inherit property of the game, it would be my free personal choice to play it this way. It would be silly to complain about how bad the game is only because of that.

I guess the OP is angry because the common P2W would be get exotic weapons/armors just with real cash

You are right, he is. But I am on contrary happy about it. Some rich guys sponsor the game so I can play it for free without being handicapped. What could be better?

By that logic.. wouldn’t that mean there is no such thing as a grindy game? None of them force you. They just reward you in different ways, but you can always choose to opt out of those rewards.

The thing is, a lot of games out there are forcing you to grind (or to take money in the hand) if you want fully participate in the game.

GW2 doesn’t. You just look a little bit different if you do. That’s all.

Yes, of course, if your main target in the game is to obtain all the skins and achievements you will have to grind. But if you would gain all of this for free and instant it would be no target at all. And there is actually no reason to do it, because it does not influence your other game experience. GW2 is like a high building with elevator AND stair together. If you want to take the stair it’s free to you to do it – end enjoy. But you can just take the elevator and enjoy the top view easy way without “grinding the stairs”.

Agree with OP
Yet Anet says they don’t want GW2 to become a grind. If they would actually play their game without the “dev” abilities they will see everything in it is a grind.

Anet says, you don’t have to grind to participate in the game 100% and enjoy it the same way the grinding players do. Anet does not say, you can have all the game offers without effort.

You can grind if you want – for sure. But you don’t have to if you don’t. It doesn’t matter at all.

A small story about gambling odds

when people say they feel cheated, the argument is: it was a gamble, you should have nown (you used that very argument).

Now that I reply gambling has rules that weren’t followed here, it’s no longer gambling…

Kimbald, I only mentioned to you that the event is not a gambling in a juristic sense of this word. So it doesn’t make sense to put juristic arguments on the table. Just forget them, they do not work.

I’m 100% with you that this event is a gambling in the common sense. But common sense says to me: in the gambling you take your chance and you can win but you can lose either. If you always win its not a gamble.

I see a lot of people here who apparently don’t understand what gambling does mean – or cannot stand to lose. I say, it’s silly and childish. Grow up, guys. You cannot have everything and pay nothing.

You say it is bad than people complain. You are right. But people always complain. Right now people complain that they buy 100 chests and get nothing (this is not true by the way, but ok). If the chance to get some skins would be higher you would have the same people here complaining that they bought 50 chests and got nothing. Or 10 chests – and got nothing. Or got a lot of skins they don’t need but not the skin they wanted. Buh, buh, Arena, buh!

If you take random out of this and put the skins in the shop for direct buying you will have people complaining how expensive the skins are and how bad it is to force customers to pay with real money for them. If the skins are so cheap that basically everyone can afford them you’ll get people complaining that everyone has everything and nothing is special.

And if you don’t have new skins at all people complain that there is nothing new in the game.

People complain, it’s more human than desire to eat, to sleep or to have sex.

The thing is: the skins all the fuss is about do not actually impact the game in any way. The don’t make your char better or stronger, they don’t show that you’re better or richer player. They are just optic, nothing more. So Arena didn’t grab for you money they merely offer you opportunity to spend your money for something you don’t need. If it’s crossing the line for you than you are a dreamer.

Kimbald, I am quite sure that such ingame random drops are not gambling in the strict legally sense.

And again, if you want to get some skins for sure then buy gems exchange them to gold and buy the skins from the market. Or make gold directly ingame – and again buy the skins from the market. You don’t have to gamble or involve real money at all. It’s your personal free choice.

2 Kimbald:

I understand your point. But
a) two dozen guys who complain here are not necessary representative for the majority of the players.
b) you have always, always, always two dozen guys complaining about everything in forum.
c) even if it is key factor for the shop keeper to maintain his customers happy the silly complains of the customers don’t become less silly.

If someone feels cheated because he gambled without knowing the rules instead of waiting a little bit then… Hey, see it like a lessen for the future: TANSTAAFL.

its worse than pay to win…Anet ask you to buy keys just to gamble skins.

Where is it worse? You are free to gamble or not to gamble. If you do – it’s your choice. If you don’t then you are not punished elsewhere in the game. So what’s the whining is all about?

The way they promote it in the BLTC it sounds like you will likely get something.

“The Black Lion Chest is getting a spooky upgrade for Halloween. Between October 23 and November 5 each Black Lion Chest you open has a chance to give you one of six exclusive Halloween-themed weapon skins!”

I don’t read anything about “likely” in the official statement. You do?

Doesn’t exactly sound like it’s only a very slim chance either…

A chance is a chance. What is slim for you is great for me, it’s veeeery subjective. Would be great if Arena publicized the hard values for the drops… but I don’t wonder they didn’t.

People accept low drop rates in the game itself, not when they pay real money.

You don’t have to pay real money for the Halloween skins. It’s your free personal choice. Don’t blame Arena if you did.

Anet had their trust, given the reputation of the shop in GW1.
They failed that trust with these droprates.

Ok, I didn’t play GW1 so I have no idea how it was handled in the good old times. But as a new customer I don’t see any issues with the event. You wanna be the first one with the new skins – you pay for this a lot. You are a patient guy? Then you can have the new skins for less. You don’t bother? It’s ok because the new skins do not impact the game. So what?

As long as such gear don’t affect the game in other ways than pure look I’m absolute in line with Arena. If there are people who are willing to pay a lot of real money to get some spooky looking skins first – why not take this money to secure the game maintenance and development?

Since I’ve hit 40 and run with the build like one described here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Guide-The-Comprehensive-Mesmer-Guide-all-Parts/first#post138503 , I have almost no problem with pve if the zone level is not higher than 3-5 lvl above mine. Almost none because in the events you have to conquer some fiends taken place you can live forever but you just cannot kill all the bad guys quickly enough to get the place clear if you are alone. But that’s only one issue I have actually. With good gear (which I don’t have) the results would probably be much better. But why bother?

I run with staff and sword/focus or sword/pistol.

PS: Didn’t get my guardian and thief so high atm, so cant compare them to mesmer. But if they really would be much easier than him, then the game would be a joke cause it’s already not a big challenge with mesmer. So can’t believe it.

It is not game-shattering, but it is annoying. Quite a lot actually. You don’t think so? Then measure the amount of time you’re just running in the world and take 10% of it, you will soon get some hours together. Hey, GW2 is beautiful but running around is still not my favorite way to spend the ingame time.

Mesmer for sure doesn’t need a combat speed buff but something to move quicker outside of the fights would be a delight.

The game’s not even been out a month.

The game should be perfect, dude, when it was released. Or 2 days later at least. So whats the point then? Im not expecting them to tank a mob for 10 seconds, but it really seems like they are one shotted. If they spawn and go bye bye in seconds, its basically a light armor melee…might as well stack vit and toughness and dish out poor dps.

Later on your illusions make more (significantly more) damage and you can make benefit of dying clones. And you can generate much more illusions, so than even if every one of them is oneshotted by the mob, the mob will never get to you – because there are still one-two clones still standing around.

But you need traits for all this – so the time up to lvl40 can be quite hard, so be prepared.

Not necessarily true. It gives an obvious edge to players who have hardware with macro capability or the know-how to run hotkey macro programs, placing people at a disadvantage just because they cannot/will not run the same 3rd party equipment or software.

I don’t know what you think people are doing that requires some sort of macro functionality (admittedly I have a g-19 and corsair programmable 16 button mouse but that’s beside the point) as I do it without any 3rd party crap. It’s not that hard to hit “H” equip horn, “4” use horn, equip weapon and “H” again to close down the hero window. I think that’s why we have that quick inventory window in the hero pane in the first place because otherwise why have that AND an inventory box with those same items?

The thing is, with a decent macrotool you can – probably – do it much quicker and more often than manually. Jump out of combat, press butten X, instantly get boon A+B+C out of your spare equipment – jump back to the combat. Such kind of abusing of the equipment change mechanism i can realy good imagine. And it would be no good for the game, imho.
