Azman – Asura Necromancer, Kemena – Human Guardian
Emracool – Sylvari Elementalist, Lyra Lightbender – Sylvari Mesmer
Grenth’s frigid cloaca
Do you mind if I start using this phrase from now on?
Since we’re talking about vampire necros anyway, I’m working on a hybrid crit/condition build and I was thinking of putting 10 points into blood to get Vampiric Precision. Assuming I don’t invest too heavily in healing power and I’m using a dagger for maximum chances to crit, would the life siphon from just that trait even be worth it?
I’m super psyched. Since those two skills are the ones I use most often in DS, and I generally use them in melee range, these changes are just what I needed. I hated how Life Blast got weaker the more you used it; now hopefully this will mean a noticeable increase in damage
For the first 38-ish levels I was just running scepter+dagger, laying down bleed and poison while hiding behind my minions. Now I’m starting to shift to a more hybrid conditions/DS build, using axe+focus for vuln stacking. Today’s patch seems like a great boon to all styles of necro, so I can’t wait to try out some of these changes when I get home.
Life Blast: This skill now scales based on range instead of amount of life force.
As a necro who is finally learning how to utilize DS properly, this is the change that excites me the most (in addition to the new skill, of course). The question is will the damage boost be noticeable; anyone online now have thoughts on this?
After trying a few other builds with Necro and not digging them too much, I’ve recently settled on a build that’s all about stacking vulnerability and then attacking with a beefed up Death Shroud. Axe+focus is my weapon set of choice, and it synergizes very well with this because axe 1 and focus 4 both apply vulnerability, axe 2 builds up my life force, and axe 3 and focus 5 help keep enemies away if I need to kite them some more. So far it’s the build that I’ve had the most success with, even though I’m level 20, I’m liking it a whole lot more than conditionmancer or minion master.
I know that toughness = armor and vitality = max HP. What I don’t know is at what point it becomes more beneficial to boost toughness over vitality, or vice versa. For example, if I want to make my guardian more durable overall and I’m only focusing on one stat, should it be toughness or vitality? I’m having trouble understanding the difference between the two because they both have the same general effect, i.e. increasing the amount of hits you can take before you die.
Yeah, I’m not entirely sure why you even made this thread. It seems like you’ve tried out all the classes already and you’ve formed an opinion on each of them. What do you expect us to tell you that you haven’t already figured out?
My only advice is to not restrict yourself from playing certain classes because other people are already playing them. I know what you’re talking about because I’m the same type of player; I like to do the thing that no one else is doing. But this game is popular enough that everyone is already doing everything, so no matter what you pick you’ll be just like everyone else. You have to make yourself stand out by your own skill as a player
I might roll an elementalist just so she can watch me play one. Hell I might even end up changing from my Guardian but not likely as dieing as a Guardian is pretty much impossible and they take hardly any effort to play just keeping my shouts on cooldown.
If you’re new to MMOs and you want to play a cloth profession, I would go with Necromancer. It has the best durability/sustainability of the three cloth professions, with its life-stealing skills and minions tanking hits for you and its Death Shroud mechanic. Death Shroud in particular is really useful as a panic button, so if you’re worried about dying a lot, the Necro gives you a better chance to survive a dangerous encounter than the other two.
She said that was actually her first choice because she wanted to use a lot of pets but I told her they sucked and she changed her mind.
I don’t think it’s fair to say that the Necromancer sucks just yet, it’s still a perfectly playable class. She should at least try one out and see how it feels. Or if she wants a more persistent pet as opposed to the Necro’s disposable ones, maybe try out Ranger.
I haven’t played that mission so I don’t know any specifics, but what skills are you using? If the enemies are too strong for you up close then you need to create some distance between you and them. For instance, my necro uses scepter+focus mostly. Scepter 2 is an AoE cripple and Focus 5 is a chill, so for most melee enemies I can use those to slow them down while I pile on the damage before they can reach me. You can probably arrange something similar to happen with your enemies. Also try summoning minions so they can tank some hits for you, and don’t forget to use Death Shroud when you’re close to death.

You can craft stuff that’s better than what you could find normally at your current level. You also get XP for both gathering materials and actually crafting things.
Like I said in the other thread, I’m having tons of fun with my Guardian. Guardian was actually one of the classes I was least excited about before actually playing the game; now I play my guardian more than my necromancer.
I have a defensive playstyle that revolves around abusing block and aegis. Mace+focus is my weapon combo of choice, and if I use my skills intelligently I can easily take down mobs that are 4-5 levels higher than me. Sometimes I’ll switch to greatsword if there’s tons of mobs around or I just feel like bashing some faces in. I’m mostly stacking vitality and power on my gear, and I’m not entirely sure if that’s the right way to do it. Then again I’m only level 18, so I’m still learning a lot about the game and how to build my characters properly.
I didn’t play WoW and I haven’t tried the GW2 Warrior yet, but I’m having tons of fun with my Guardian. What’s funny is that’s one of the professions I was least excited about before playing the game. My guardian basically abuses the block/aegis mechanic so she never takes damage, and the guardian-specific Virtues are really helpful in big fights with lots of players. If you’re looking for a fun melee class that can tank to some extent (although there are no dedicated tanks in this game, it sound like that’s what you’re looking for) then you should definitely give Guardian a shot.
I am still a relatively new necromancer as well (level 15). I’ve been focusing more on the condition-inflicting aspect of his skills, so I use scepter+focus almost exclusively. Most of my traits will go into Curses and Spite most likely. Minions are nice to have but lately I’ve realized that they don’t stand up to sustained damage very well (not to mention the bone minions you can manually blow up for more damage). I always make sure they’re up when I need to fight something tough, but I don’t expect them to last through any really tough fights, so they’re more of a secondary consideration to me.
