But….. Stealth is the only means for a thief to have some survivablility. Unless they buff us to be more survivable somehow, removing stealth would make us the weakest class by far.

RNG is RNG. That’s all. Lots of people i know who throw money at the gem shop don’t get anything useful. The more you play, the higher chance you have of getting it because you are playing longer and therefore looting more….. Conspiracy theories…. lol. Even if that were true… wouldn’t it be better for business if Anet LET people know? So…. i don’t know…. people actually spend more on the gem shop to increase their MF?!?!?

The nature of the shallow combat mechanics, lack of role definition, and lack of trinity basically mean that the content you have now, zerging, facerolling, no coordination, etc..is what you should expect for the game’s entire lifespan. The game inherently lacks the depth needed to design more engaging gameplay. The game is designed around every class being able to do anything in combat to some degree and change up constantly, which homogenizes any sense of individual efficacy in a group. The depth you’re looking for is just simply not to be found in this game because of casual-geared design decisions.

On the other hand, Wildstar online seems to be pitching a lot of what GW2 has to offer like Dynamic Events, Jump Puzzles, Exploration, Fast-paced and action oriented combat (with trinity mechanics so you know it won’t be shallow and anti-social). They’re also going to have WarPlots which are like PvP arenas that can be invaded and built up or fortified by guilds in various different ways. It seems like Wildstar is going to deliver on a lot more deep and engaging gameplay because with trinity mechanics, they have the ability to structure the content in a more challenging and deep way than GW2.

What GW2 is lacking (in my opinion) is boss encounters that works well with it’s current combat system. The holy trinity is not the solution. The trinity never really had any depth. A tank, healer and dps. The boss mechanics in those games were never interesting, because all that happened was you made sure the tank was taking the damage while you mashed your combo as a dps (the one or two viable combos made up of around 5-6 skills, while your other 20 skills were useless), and the healer stared at party member’s health pools healing.

Difference between GW1 and GW2

Comparing two games I love is hard, but I do see the differences. Although I do think the combat in GW2 is better in the sense that while fighting a boss you’re actually paying attention to his actions and the encounter rather then looking at your skills standing there and spamming your build. Now mind you, I picked up GW1 when it was released by pure coincidence (I was still a middle schooler and just bought a game that had a cool looking box, which for the record; GW1 had an amazing looking box) and loved the skill system. Played for years, factions was probably one of the greatest expansions ever.

My greatest joy but also seemed like a flaw IMO was the vast skill system. Figuring out a build to beat someone 1v1 in PvP, or a hard mission’s boss (Shiro before the insta 10 second Shiro kill build was revealed) after they slaughtered you was fun, but also showed that you can beat content without even starting it. The skills made or broke your character, instead of having to make on the fly decisions like weapon swapping, utilities and dodging like in GW2. But comparing the two is hard. GW1 at release had no expectations, and imo, Anet probably didn’t know what to expect, but it succeeded and rightfully so. It’s a game that I will always remember as the most enjoyable MMO before GW2 xD. GW2 had high expectations, and some of the systems they put in place sounded good on paper, but didn’t work out. GW2 has flaws, but imo is still a great game, and is only improving as the months are going along. The combat system has a good foundation and is set up in a way to create very interesting encounters for PVE and PvP in the future. I hope they work on making the personal Story more engaging for future expansions (Personal Story is good, but not great). Only complaint I have for WvW is the undermanned buff. Extra karma and gold won’t influence my party of 10 holding off a 30 man zerg in the least. Dungeons for me are actually ok, the boss encounters aren’t that interesting (which hopefully will be worked on) but when I thought about it, they don’t really have many random mobs just standing there waiting to be killed like in most other MMOs. Every room has a purpose xD. sPvP needs more game modes. PvP in general is fun (fights can be pretty epic) but some more modes would help PvP. (such as GvG, a MOBA style like in Halloween maybe). All this could possibly be implemented in the future, they are just what I find to be things I think about, but none take away from the gameplay.

This is just my personal opinion, I started to sound subjective near the end, but that’s to be expected from an opinion. Just my two cents on GW1 & GW2.

Why Is Leveling Experience *So* Inconsistent?

I do agree with you that some classes faceroll too easily early game (warriors especially) and some have more trouble. Yeah, warriors are OP in both armor and damage compared to a thief, which makes the thief less attractive to begin with, but my main is a thief, and i love it, regardless of the obvious difference. My warrior facerolls mobs 4 levels higher then him sometimes, which is kind of hilarious. I guess it doesn’t really bother me because i love mobility so my 2 lvl 80s are ele and thief while my lower levels are guardian and warrior, but I can see what your concern is. In the end, what’s in game, is in game, and I wouldn’t count on balancing early game damage and survivability on the top of their list.

Not getting hooked on GW2 [merged]

Hey there,

I somewhat agree; however, I think you are judging to simplicity too soon. Yes, you only have those skills on your weapon slots, but you are missing other things.

1. Traits, these affect how you use those skills
2. F buttons, these can change depending on your class/trait/weapon set up
3. Utility Skills, you have quite a few to choose from and the 3 you choose are important
4. Elite skill, you have a cpl to choose from and generally it’s an easy decision

5. Dungeons, the combat mechanics in dungeons are much different than the open world, and it is much harder to keep alive. You really need to be on your toes and use the right skills at the right times (As you are penalized with long cool downs which sucks if your timing is off) I did a dungeon the other day and my roommate came home, he asked me to hit the button on the TV cuz I was beside it and I did, I lost half my health in the 1 second I wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing.

The utility skills are also annoying though in the fact that some just outclass others completely.

I have started to unlock traits, but it takes a good few levels before they really become anything useful, like, a really good few.

And annoyingly I am far from dungeon level, not to play hardcore fan, but the fact warcraft has low level dungeons to play through and level up with was pretty good, it gives you something else to do from constant questing or event grinding.

The Elementalist class is a very fun class if you learn your own style, with swapping out of attunements depending on the situation. Also the first dungeon is at level 30, have you only been playing 10 minutes a day to not be close to that level?

Ok, How would you design end-game?

1. (I may go a bit off topic)
It is nearly impossible to make a game that is not a grind (in terms of spending hours on end to receive a certain item) in an MMORPG. Especially since they (Anet, and mmorpg companies in general) want to keep the playerbase playing for more then 30 hours, they need something apart from the regular content. Although if sooooooo much versatile/different content was added with different mechanics that lasted just as long as a gear grind, i would love that (at the moment, they are doing a pretty decent job of it, i’m enjoying it). Another big wall in making a game non-grindy is the term grindy is self-imposed. What I find grindy, may not be grindy to someone else, and vice versa. Just like how you can’t make everyone happy, that’s why there is so much conflict on these forums between people who like the changes in this game, and the ones who don’t like them and enjoy a treadmill of repeating content (which isn’t exactly bad, I played Wow and doing dungeons and raids were fun, but I eventually got bored of them).
2. No MMORPG has been non-grindy. In my opinion, GW2 has done the best job of making a non-grindy game, since there are so many options. I have not worked towards ascended or Legendary, and i’m perfectly happy doing WvW, Fractals, Dungeons, Orr, Alt leveling, JPs, etc. (I’m just one of those people that uses every aspect of the game, so that might be a reason i’m still enjoying the game, since I do literally everything…)

On a side note, it put a smile on my face to read all these replies, and all of them were constructive, no one took shots at each other , even though there were disagreements. This is how it should be

January monthly achievement, are you serious?

Seriously? People are complaining that monthlies force them to do specific tasks that they don’t want to do? So the monthly should just be a daily… just more kills, gathers, etc… Monthlies don’t give you super loot anyways, it’s optional…

Already dismissed the whole “optional” argument about a thousand times so I won’t do it again.

As for the “it doesn’t give very good loot” bit:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Monthly

Completing all tiers of all monthly achievements awards extra 3% experience, coins, 20 Mystic Coins, and 10 Jugs of Liquid Karma.

For those who do a lot of crafting or are seeking to obtain their legendaries, those rewards may not be essential but they can be helpful.

Yeah, I was venting because I was scrolling through the forums and only about 1% of posts are positive. Most of the negative ones are very trivial, including this one (The last straw haha). The thing is, Anet might not add the best objectives to parts of the game like monthlies, but honestly, even if they were simple tasks like the dailies, people would complain because they are too easy and boring (always something wrong). Most complaints are completely self entitled and no solution is given. So basically my rant was kind of off the specific topic, but is just my personal opinion full of emotion and no logic. Enjoy the game… why play if you are just frustrating yourself?

Seriously? People are complaining that monthlies force them to do specific tasks that they don’t want to do? So the monthly should just be a daily… just more kills, gathers, etc… Monthlies don’t give you super loot anyways, it’s optional… Having something different is a really good feature! I was running jumping puzzles with my guildies. Takes 1 hour to finish 30 jps (If you just visit them, not complete them. I completed them anyways so it took longer). Takes a couple hours for 7 fractals. That’s easy, 1 day or a couple of days for casual players. 50 WvW kills… did it in 20 minutes, just joined a random group and killed 50 people. Now only the events are the time consuming one. So a monthly that’s meant for 30 days can be completed in 2-3 days.

You people always have something to complain about. Anet gives you too much freedom, that’s a problem. If they restrict an OPTIONAL feature, that’s a problem. Anything that irritates you slightly, you rush to the forums to vent your frustrations. How about some of you give a plausible solution to monthlies instead of just kittening about them? Or just don’t do them? Do something else that you find enjoyable -_-
