Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

I would also like to point out another issue created through the ascended gear implementation:
I had decided to create the Vision of the Mists Greatsword as it is one of the best looking greatswords I have seen in every game I have played so far (both MMOs and non). However, after the introduction of Ascended Greatswords later on, all the effort I am going to put to create it is going to be in vein. One might say that I will still have the skin. However, I still want to say that after the implementation of the ascended gear, ArenaNet itself won’t encourage the enjoyment of skin collecting. Not to mention that the endless effort to obtain the new ascended gear is not going to allow me to invest as much time as I want in creating the Vision of the Mists weapon. Whatever this game created might as well be destroyed overnight.

Disappointing. I felt very displeased when I heard “slightly better than exotic”. This change outdates all the current content, eg the dungeons and the high level areas. It’s been only 3 months in this game and all the talk about non grinding gameplay is going to the rubbish bin for unknown reasons.

I was so happy when I learnt that there was at last a game with no gear grinding. I was so frustrated when I heard “slightly more powerful than exotic”. I thought that Anet was an innovative and interesting company (at least that’s what GW1 had showed me). However, with this change I am afraid that the game I have since release loved is going to transform into a bad gear grind. I am playing this game because I want the freedom offered by the non-grind model. Making gear which is better than exotic outdates the current dungeons as well as the current high level areas (everyone will be farming the new dungeon). I believe that Arenanet should have kept those for an expansion. Disappointing news overall.

They wont play anymore.

I do play the way I want and I cannot see any grinding or farming in the game. Of course if you want the dungeon set and you want it NOW, well, you need to repeat the content continuously. Personally, I am gonna play the game the way I want and do dungeons when I want and I am calculating that I will have a full set in 3 or 4 months’ time.
I believe that the community is so “addicted” to the reward-based model that they cannot value a healthy gaming environment where the fun is the reward.

Warriors are too strong !!

In my opinion, melee combat is far more difficult than ranged. Warrios are not “very powerful”. I get to die like a worm when 4 mobs drop on me. However, my elementalist friend, just kites them.

Thank you!

Just started university courses and this game is just great for me. Even the times I want to be hardcore, I can. Thank you a lot for the hard work.

What about mounts?

This would not be good for the game for a few reasons.

1. The maps are designed with walking and using WP’s in mind. Waypoints are a very important money sink that prevents inflation. Using mounts would also let people skip over content and ignore dynamic events in the area.

2. No where in the lore or the story or anywhere do we hear anything about mounts other than with asura. A Norn or Charr would never ride a mount while traveling; it just wouldnt happen. Asuras already have golems (yea I know other races can ride in golems but they are huge so…). When people in this game travel on foot, they use a dolyak or other pack animal to carry their belongings and walk beside it.

3. Mounts are obsolete when you can use waypoints and asura gates to get to far places and walk anywhere else.

4. Bling should have no part in this. You already have minipets, weapons, armor, dyes ect. to show off. People that care about the story or immersion at all would not want a huge group of people riding on pink sparkly drakes or whatever everywhere.

5. When you make something like mounts, you force everyone else to use them (regardless if they want to or not) as walking just makes you slower than everyone else.

I dont think it would hurt the game to put something else you can ride in WvW as they already have golems there (something like charr war wagons/tanks) and the areas are so vast and open, but I REALLY hope we never see mounts in the normal areas. I get it that alot of people from WoW loved their mounts but this is a different game.. Its ok if it isnt exactly the same.

1. The cost of using way points as you get higher in level is way to high to be practical in any sense.

2. Every culture throughout the course of history has used mounts, yes this is a mmo and fantasy andnot reality but lets be honest a Norn is simply a knock off taken from Vikings or Norsemen…guess what they too used mounts.

3. See number 1

4. From what I have seen mini pets, weapon and armor skins are only available to players of the first GW and as such has no effect or impact on new players and as I stated before kinda not fair. I could care less how many hours you put into a dated previous edition of this game. I showed support the second I bought GW2 and spent over 50 dollars in gems. That = support as well in my opinion and should be rewarded.

5. No one forces anyone to do anything, if you don’t wanna use a mount then don’t. Using your logic why would you even care if anyone else has one? After all you have your over priced way points you seem so fond of.

1. The game’s economy and map creation was based on waypoints. The addition of mounts would not only disrupt traveling throughout Tyria, but also create a gap in the game’s economical progression. Therefore the way to solve the waypoint charge issue would better be the reduction of the prices rather than the creation of mounts. Perhaps later in an expansion and (of course) in another map.

2. What video game creators are trying to accomplish is the creation of a universe with its own characteristics. Even though the universe ArenaNet has created is inspired by reality, it still has some special characteristics. Noone who has played the first game will approve the fact that a Charr might actually be riding a Dolyak.

3. See number 1

4. There is a vast variety of weapon, armor and minipet items in the game right now making it easy to impress with them. No need to have played the first game at all to obtain them.

5. The appearence of mounts actually forces players to use them. Let’s say that I got a group to explore an area. We are 3 and 2 of us have a mount. They ’ll simply get it out and rush towards their destination. I too will be forced to get a mount.

Remove the holy trinity and what do you get?

I find the reomoval of the Holy Trinity a great feature of this game. I completely disagree with the player that created the forum who states that the dungeon runs are chaos. If you are well organised and know how to actually play the game (dodge, come up with tactics etc), there is no chaos at all. Instead, you get a well structured fight making success a cooperative and well desrved matter.
I did Ascalonian Catacombs explorable mode, paths 2 and 3 yesterday and I was indeed absolutely stunned by the greatness of the system.
