That is already there, it is called WvW
It’s not.
Something I would really like added are lawless zones in a few maps. In these zones anyone would be attackable(except for party members). SWTOR had this and it was pretty fun.
You could also add some extra loot or something in these areas.
These areas would be completely optional but would make a much richer experience for creating variety in PvP and more meaning. These areas would also let people duel if they wanted to(though they could be KOed by another person hiding in stealth :O).
As it stands now it feels like the game is PvE with PvP tacked onto the side, being very controlled.
Once again, it’s the updates to which you subscribe, not access per-se. You gain access the first time you subscribe to updates (including all past updates). Each time there is a new expansion, your subscription runs out. Because 90%+ of the new updates will be behind the new content, lack of the HoT subscription means you are also hedged out of the Living World ‘free’ updates.
This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just a different marketing model. My post is not so much to jab ANet for not calling their model a subscription as it is to try and keep the model clear in people’s minds. I see a lot of people complaining that they are short-changed by buying the original now, or will be next expansion by buying this one now. This is simply not true; you can wait till next subscription period to get better value, or buy HoT now and get the content before 2018+. Their call. The price will be the same then though in all likelyhood.
@IndigoSundown: WoW as a comparison is medeocre at best, I will admit, but it’s often either ignored or misrepresented as a comparison.
You’re also ignoring the addiction factor, which is the only reason anyone would pay 50 USD for something with a fraction of the content the original GW had.
For new players it makes some sense, for current players if you base your purchase decision on content per dollar, HOT is a terrible purchase and you’re better off buying a different game.
There’s nothing shady going on. The standard MMO Expansion costs between $40 and $50, and that is what Heart of Thorns costs.
They don’t have to give you a discount, and they are giving you a free character slot ($10 value) if you prepurchase.
Furthermore, this is not a subscription… that metaphor is completely ridiculous. Not buying the expansion doesn’t prevent you from playing the core game—it just locks you out of the new content. Try that kitten with WoW. Drop your subscription, and they won’t let you log in.
Stop QQing. If it’s too expensive, wait until it goes on sale.
Says who? SWTOR was 20, other games have been less. 50 USD for a tiny amount of content is only possible because of people who have invested significant time into the game and they feel compelled to pay it. It’s like a drug dealer increasing his price after the first charge, lol.
What is shady is bundling the games and not giving a price discount for people who currently own the core game. I don’t understand how anyone can view that as not shady. You’re paying 50 USD for content which is a fraction of the content gotten from your initial purchase, while new buyers will get 110% content for your same initial price.
Operating costs exist yes but they should still provide a discount for current owners.

OP should be honest in his original post about WHERE he purchased his copy of GW2.
Anet cannot refund you a game you purchased at AMAZON. Your support ticket should be with Amazon; Anet are already offering refunds to those player who purchased the game through them, according to their pre-purchase community address.
For all players who purchased the Guild Wars 2 core game from our website and registered it between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 in anticipation of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, we will automatically refund what you paid for the core game should you decide to pre-purchase Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns from our website or in-game store any time through July 31, 2015. If you take advantage of this refund and pre-purchase Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, all of your current account progress will be kept intact. We’ll provide further details on when refunds will be processed in the next couple weeks as we set up this process.
I bought the game directly from amazon, yes. I don’t want a refund I want the option of paying the difference in cost. If Area Net is incapable of servicing customers who buy their game from licensed seller then they are viewed even more poorly in my eyes.
Again this is a fun game but their new pricing model is clearly a cash grab and an exploitation of those who have invested significant time and money into the game.
The cash shop should provide the money needed for content like similar games.
People who bought the game on release got the most out of it, it’s clearly on its way out now as ANET has decided they don’t have the money sustain their previous plan.
Shouldn't S2 be included in HoT Package?

So uh, what about people who just bought the game? We’re being screwed over the hardest by ANETs policies.

Please update us with how your issue was handled.
Apparently it won’t be handled.
People like me who recently bought the game will need to buy(separately).
Living World Content along with HOT, amounting to over 70 USD ontop of our base GW game cost(which for me was 20 USD).
The game is fun but I am never going to spend any money in the cash shop, I maybe buy HOT when it drops to 20 USD or less but I feel no desire to be furthered screwed over by AreaNets policies.
I’m kind of kicking myself for not buying ESO.

This is nice and all but I still bought the game from amazon a couple weeks ago, your policy still makes me pay for content twice.
I don’t have a good solution for you but I know I won’t be buying the expansion any time soon. If the base game becomes unplayable I will quit and spend my time/money elsewhere.
Send in a support ticket maybe. I’ve heard that some people who purchased the game within the last 30 days gets a refund/upgrade to the Standard. I don’t think it hurts to send in a ticket.
Explain how?
I don’t mind paying the difference since I got the game for cheaper, but I shouldn’t need to pay an additional 50 since I bought the game a week ago.
The whole thing is absurd and poorly thoughtout.
Since according to this post you bought it around 11 of june you are in the window of 14 day refund policy on online items.
Maybe you should talk to amazon
No refunds from Amazon.
They did the minimum to prevent a full scale rebellion.
The same thing happened to me. They should let us buy the game at a difference in cost from what we payed.
To be honest this whole thing leaves me not wanting to buy another thing from them.
I agree with OP, as a new player I find the idea of having to buy both expansion and base game absurd. It needs to be 10$ discount.
In my case I am getting screwed over harder then the vets since I bought the game from Amazon a couple weeks ago and I have no recourse.
ANET doing this is saying: The base game you payed for now has no value, pay for this new game at full price(which you already own most of) or be left behind.
I sort of now wish I bought ESO instead, while this base game is fun I don’t feel like paying an additional 50 USD.
My only option is to wait for the price to drop but if it does I am going to suspect a new expansion will be coming out and so I will wait to buy it based upon this experience.
I won’t stop playing but I won’t be buying anything from the gem store, will also probably check out SWTOR again.

great Scot do you hear yourselves “we want this” we dont want that" boo hoo they are a business they need to make money if you’d like they could implement a sub fee and lower the price of the expansion but i personally like the fact that i don’t pay monthly for this game
That’s nice and all except there are people who recently bought the game.
The issue is not the 50 USD price, the issue is including the base game with the expansion and making us buy the base game over again for no benefit.

You need to give a discount to people who already had accounts and a price-difference upgrade option to those of us who recently bought the game(myself included – last week).
Same thing happened to me. They need to offer an upgrade option for recent purchasers along with a discount for older accounts.
At the moment we have been straight up ripped off.

So last week I bought GW2, I’m more then a little annoyed about the expansion including the base game(with ANET doing this, they are essentially saying the base game is worthless).
I assumed expansions would require the base game or at least give a discount for people with the base game(it is understandable for the package to be less but there still needs to be a discount – say at least 10USD off), the idea of having to purchase the base game over-again seems absurd(regardless of when you purchased it).
So my questions are simple.
1. Can I upgrade my account without having to pay an additional 50?
2. For future expansions will you give a discount to existing players(say 10USD or something) if the expansion includes the base game?
If the question is no to #1, I am never buying another ANET game again. If the question is no to #2, I am seriously considering not buying another ANET game either since as said above it is essentially saying the base game you payed for is now worthless.
If this is going to be ANET policy it’s rather good I found out now before I invest any more time into the game. I payed for the separate GW1 games but they were not expansions, they were stand alone games. This is fundamentally different.
