It would be great if the Devs could have a Q&A hour maybe once a month or even just this once for each class.

Ranger doesn't mean archer...

People are probably going to yell at me for this, but… I believe that Rangers should be strongest ( unless traited for it) with a bow, but should not exclusively use one. Ie. LB/Axe and Dager.

I made my Ranger believing (from the description mind you) believing that a ranger would/should be a strong range class. I made a condi ranger and used a SB and switched to a sword and torch when my target was too close to get the best damage. I mostly relied on the SB. In groups I was great at pulling and kiting and I was always dodging and moving while dropping a healing spring nearly every 30 sec in a fight. When I couldn’t dodge or keep away from a target I often felt like a butterfly trapped in a net, but with the nerf to the SB range and the skill 3 still unreliable at best, I am forced to rely heavily on melee and that was never my intention when making a Ranger.

I have also been turned away from groups for being a ranger, and I can’t say I blame them. I don’t want to be useless to my party. At this point I am playing a guardian, because if I’m going to use melee that is the class I prefer because they are helpful to an entire party. I can’t say I do sPvP that often or WvW, mostly I do PvE, dungeons and FotM.

As a Condi/Trap Ranger I would be sad to see the Trap Ground Targeting 50% larger, but it would be worth it over all. Even if some of these were nerfed, so they aren’t op.

So, now that it’s clear you guys read this. What can we do as players to get the Ranger on track again?

We should make a list of all the Rangers Anet killed with this patch.
I think my favorite quote so far has been Rangers are like Piles of Putrid Essence: Rare and useless.

I was just wondering if the Devs even read or care about this forum. I know stupid question, but they apparently have time to say goodbye to one person (who posted on the forums), but haven’t said anything to us.

It’s not that I don’t switch weapons in WVW, it’s that I can’t compete with classes that can have near perma swiftness (unless traited now).

Switch the poison trap for a frost trap. The frost trap has a longer cd, but is an extra combo field, so an extra shield. Also I like frost better than poison.

Oh really? Reality begs to differ;

You are absolutely correct. Reality does beg to differ. Do you consider standing in the Mists and shooting a stationary golem in the back reality?

Edit: Oh nevermind, I understand now. You’re a proponent of some sort of “New Reality”. I get it.

While it’s not my video, it does prove that Rangers can apply 14 stacks of bleed by simply autoattacking. That is a fact, and the video proves it. While it’s not always the case with a moving enemy, it still doesn’t change the fact that the Shortbows risk/reward-ratio is the most skewed of any weaponset in the game. Since the Shortbow will also apply poison, cripple, swiftness and evasion, it doesn’t take 5 braincells to spam every skill off CD, and simply walk backwards. And we’re talking 1v1s here. In a larger fight, just target anyone who’s not facing you, and autoattack away.

Also, I’m not sure what my guildname has to do with anything. Way to prove your ignorance!

#SafiMoyo
Read the OP. The entire thread revolved around running away (and chasing), in which case your back would be turned to the ranger.

#Reisinger
You can stack just as much bleed in PvE.

I know I’m speaking for deaf ears, as any GW2 player seems to be incredibly offended every time their precious OP class gets nerfed to par. I’m aware that most people want high rewards for minimal effort (as seen everywhere on these forums), but unfortunately, I can’t support that view. Besides, the nerf was fairly small. The only major difference now, is that other ranged classes can fight back from the same range (ie. Engi, Warrior, Thief). Oh the horror.

Do you even play a Ranger? If someone is running away it’s not our fault his back is towards us. Also range is a Ranger’s best asset like a Warrior’s strength and high health or a Thief’s stealth. The SB’s range was just compensating for that.

What's the point of a ranger?

The point of the Ranger is on the arrow we just shot to 1500 range and we’re waiting for our AI Pets to bring it back to shoot it far away again.

But seriously, that’s how our auto-attack will work starting next month.

Correction. We will probably only get to shoot it to 900 with the LB and our AI pet will probably get lost on the way back, and no one will fix it.

That blurb is only a drawn out way of saying Ranger can equip longbows and shortbows nothing more.

I get that. I’m not asking for a pistol or a rifle. Again I mostly run conditions so when I switch weapons it’s a sword and torch, but I prefer to stay away from my enemies, as much as possible.

According to guildwars2.com this is what a ranger is:

Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.

Couldn’t find the unparalleled archer part ingame.

Oh sheesh…Not this again.

The warrior introduction on the same part of the website says “Warriors are masters of weaponry” so obviously they should outperform everyone else using all kinds of weapons, including bows, right?

I don’t think most players are actually dumb enough to think those blurbs are making promises about game-balancing. I think they’re just trying to play some kind of head game with the developers. The worst case of this I ever saw was in Dark Age of Camelot. God help them, but the pre-release introduction blurb for the eldritch class in that game identified them as “wielding the most powerful spells in the world” or something like that. When the game actually launched the eldritch, of course, was about as strong as every other spellcaster. This kicked off literally years of posters whining on forums about how the developers had “promised” them that their eldritch would be stronger than everyone else.

Guild Wars 2 is designed to give a lot of different weapon options to every class, and it’s pretty clear that all of the weapons are at least intended to be good. They didn’t give warriors and thieves access to bows with the caveat that their archery skills would always be inferior to rangers. If those classes had weapons that were, by design, inferior then nobody would use them anyway and even including them would be a waste of time. So no, rangers are not really unparalleled archers in Guild Wars 2 and they’re not going to be.

If you think ranger bow skills are underpowered, then go ahead and make a case for Arenanet to buff them, but the case should be something other than “the pre-release intro blurb said nobody else would be good with a bow.”

Warriors have the higher HP, and Thieves have stealth. As a Ranger I would really like the distance between me and my enemy. I spend a lot of time kiting and pulling. The SB is my weapon of choice because I have a lot of mobility with it. The LB takes to long to shoot and I feel open to attacks. Some people are arguing the nerf to the SB was necessary, but when you can trait to shoot the longbow further the SB doesn’t really shoot the same distance. Also with the stacks of bleed that’s where my damage comes from, not from the bow itself. Maybe they should nerf the Mesmer’s phantasms because they cause confusion, or the range on a staff because they apply conditions too.

I would have liked to see them shorten the cool down time for the longbows. I’m saddened by the weakness only being stack-able to 5. If my pet and I both get 5 stacks for opening strike then what good is traiting for it then?

opening strike grants weakness now?

If you are traited for it.

My Superior Sigil of Corruption is stuck on 1 stack. It doesn’t matter if I zone change weapons to a different sigil or die, I always have 1 stack of Corruption. Is anyone having similar issues or experienced something similar? Anyone have any new suggestions?
