No focus on objectives or communication in the zerg fest PvP

The metagame is still young. Every pvp game ive ever played had underwhelming pvp. This is because pvp largely depends on the ingenuity of the players in order to become “fun”. As of now, we are all noobs, so we all play sPvP like noobs (zergfest). Once the meta matures, you’ll see a lot of more complex strategies.

GW1 went through the same growing pains. Just give it time, the game just got out and the meta is still very immature.

Build for traits, not for stats. Stats come from gear. In the early levels the stats from traits help a lot, but late game they are a drop in the bucket.

lmaooo I just made a thread on this. Yeah the butter is crazy…there’s no way its supposed to be that high.

I think Butter drops a bit much

Is it possible we can get this adjusted? I am literally being overtaken by masses of butter. The drop rate might be a wee bit on the high end, its rather insane now. Especially when we’re getting 13-17 pieces of butter a supply bag.

Heres the deal with swearing. Using colorful metaphors isn’t inhearently offensive. If it offends someone, they need to grow a thicker skin. They have the Ignore button or the profanity filter.

Today it seems that everyone is offended by something. Someone says "Holy s***, that was a very tuff boss fight, but hey we did it and survived! " and poof… they get banned because they used the S-word. Even the Supreme Court ruled that the F-bomb and swears cannot be censured and fall under the protection of the first amendment.

Yes I understand the TOS and EULA that we all agreed to, stated this is a no-no. But really.. as a society, has our mental fortitude become so waterdown, that we have become deathly afraid of these simple words?

Anyways just remember it’s not the colorful metaphors that are offensive it’s the context in which they are used that is offensive. the only people that should be banned or put in time out are those that are harrassing people while using these words. MHO

I dont disagree but that is unenforceable. You basically have a system that relies entirely on staff interpretation, which is not visible to the players. Basically you have players getting banned for one thing, while others aren’t banned for something else. Its inconsistent and the playerbase starts to distrust you.

I’d rather have a tight noose because at least I know there is no room for interpretation. You curse you are banned…simple as that. Racial slurs? Banned. Sexist slurs? Banned. Harassment? Banned. Its easy to understand, incredibly transparent, and there’s none of that “I think it was just a har har joke” business.

The other alternative is to just say “forget it” and let it turn into the typical internet chat: full of flames and disgusting use of language.

The swearing policy is a horrible cop-out method of giving the game admins and moderators the power to ban for whatever they desire. They can always say the person in question broke the TOS because everyone breaks the TOS.

For example, the word I was banned for (Anal) is not word filtered on the forum and so is clearly not offensive enough to warrant a ban, yet I was banned for it at the whim of a hypocritical dictator.

How is anal even remotely appropriate?

1. Strong sexual content

or

2. Insulting someone

Jus sayin, you just have to watch your mouth. Its really not that hard to behave yourself.

I sincerely doubt the veracity of Turtle’s claim.

Who cares what you doubt? The events I have described are precisely what happened immediately prior to being kicked from the game server. If you’re actually going to support this system to the point of simply ignoring counter evidence or arguments, then you’re just irrational.

It was inappropriate. You are not allowed to talk like that in public areas, stores, shopping malls, businesses, schools, charity functions, the list goes on. You can do so freely if no one can hear you, obviously, but if someone is exposed to your inappropriate use of language you will be promptly asked to leave the facility/area you are in. In other words, you are temp banned.

ANET is like any other store/public place you go to. You have to follow the rules.

Well I don’t doubt you’re correct in your skepticism. In any case, the bans aren’t nearly as tight as people say they are. People are just used to getting away with whatever they want on the internet. All of a sudden there’s rules and ppl are freaking out.

Swearing doesn’t necessarily indicate abuse. Just FYI.

That really depends on the person hearing it. Some consider it offensive regardless of context; therefore, use of it would be abusing those ppl.

I take it you don’t have the privilege of listening to many high school kids talk amongst themselves.

Player versus player combat is suffering from the following problems.

No one knows how to play their class, its clear as day. Thieves are so easy to kill its just not funny, and those one-button spam moves are easy to dodge and counter. We have at most 13 initiative, which is 4 heartseekers at most. If you can’t survive 4 of those you are way too squishy.

Moving on, you shouldn’t be alone in sPvP unless you roll a class that is great at 1v1 survival. Thieves roll alone because they have great 1v1 survival skills. 2v1? Not so much, and 3v1 even less. You want to stop a thief? CC and conditions. Blind=waste of initiative which is a very valuable resource. Confusion KILLS us because we attack so fast. Weakness kills our burst dmg for obvious reasons, and leaves us with you still mostly alive while we have 0 initiative.

If you’re sitting there trying to face-tank a thief you are doing it wrong. The same goes vs a mesmer. Classes like thieves and mesmers looooove those 1 vs 1 situations. Don’t play that game.

TL;DR- Make a thief waste his initiative. You can do this via blind, protection, weakness, and dodges. Chill is also fantastic.

The stun on Pistol Whip doesn’t last nearly so long that you can’t dodge out of it after you’re hit >_> just dodge.

Unload- Dodge

Heartseeker- Dodge..its so telegraphed you can’t miss it.

Basically: Getting owned with one button spam is just playing badly. Dodge. Thieves spam one button because ppl still havent figured out what the dodge button does. Its the same reasons warriors used to spam 100b. Once the meta learns to dodge things will get really good.

Ppl only say Necros are bad because they are boring to play (tho i disagree). It has nothing to do with their abilities, because quite frankly Necros are very strong. Mechanically, at least for some, they are bland and outright awful.

This is not a game for adults, its a game for teens. As such, you have to mind your mouth. It shouldn’t be that hard for full-grown adults to filter their language because impressionable youngsters are lurking. People do it with kids all the time in real life, why should an MMO be any different. The problem is when people get on the internet they change. They feel like there’s no rules, dont feel accountable for anything, and more or less act like hooligans.

ANET is not asking you to do a lot. All they are asking is for you to mind your mouth, because everyone should be allowed to enjoy a game without running into racists, misogynists, and whatever “ist” you can imagine. Now I do think there should be a warning for first time offenders, just so people clearly understand how rules are being enforced. But after the warning bans seem sufficient. The only issue I have is the reported lack of warning.

I"m rather shocked everyone is up in arms because a company dares ask you to be polite on their property. And in case you didn’t realize it, GW2 is their property. You wouldn’t walk into work slinging profanities where everyone can hear them (lol well some jobs do this), and I’m sure you wouldn’t walk into the playground telling flesh light jokes to women and children. ANET is just reminding you that the internet is no different than your conduct in any other public sphere, you have to act right.

Saving Quinn from two-blade Pete

amradio.2513

HI!
I can’t believe the trouble I am having with 2-blade Pete in this part of the street rat story!! I am level 12 and he kills me every time – no matter if I try 2 daggers, a short bow, a sword and a pistol. I can’t keep him off me at range and I can’t stand up to him face to face. I’m about to ditch this build and start from scratch, but I can’t help thinking I’m doing something wrong, missing some angle to fighting him.
I’d appreciate any help at all with this. It’s incredibly frustrating, especially since I have very few problems elsewhere in the game.
Maybe I’m the only one having this problem? If so, I’ll just move on, like honey badger . . .

Story missions are pretty hard with Thief. Basically you have to kite and dodge, use bleeds to your advantage (guns say high), and stack blinds so you don’t die (sword or dual pistols works well). You will have to switch weapons while you wait for initiative to regen.

I recommend S/P on one weapon set and P/P on the other one. Alternatively you can use D/D on one set and P/D on the other. S/P gives you shadow return which is a great way to escape and switch to P/P while kiting and stacking bleeds. D/D gives you an evading dual skill, while P/D gives you a handy dual skill that will shadow step you backwards so you can kite and bleed. The offhand dagger also has a cripple skill so kiting is easier.

Alternatively, if you’re really good at timing, you can use an S/D. The dual skill dodges behind your opponent and stabs them for sweet damage. Again, you get shadow return for escapes.

Basically there are a lot of ways to do it. Its more about using your weapons correctly and doing a lot of in and out.

No gear to get once 80.
No rewards for pvp or pve
You basically just play, hit 80, then what? Do the same thing you been doing since lvl 1.
I’m gonna play my toon to 80 to get my money’s worth. So far it is fun but I’m worried it’s going to get boring fast. With nothing to shoot for then why bother?
I would play just to mess with the dungeons but I hear they are so hard it isn’t even fun. I’m holding judgment on that since I haven’t been in one myself yet..
I’m not a hard core player by any means so when I get a chance to play I need to make it worth my time. Just seems there’s no goals to be met in this game tho.
Am I wrong?

Lol umm…play for fun? Does no one play for fun anymore? I remember back in the days where ppl would plunk money into an arcade game for HOURS just so they could get that #1 spot on the leaderboards. That was the only reward in it, but that was enough to plunk down 20-30 dollars just to get there.

I remember all the Street Fighter/MK tournaments where the only point was to win, even though you didnt get anything special for it. Ppl just genuinely loved to play and loved to win. I don’t get where this “no reward=no fun” mentality comes from. It boggles my mind.

No PvP rewards? o.O

You need to think of PvP in this game as an MMO version of something like Counter-Strike or DOTA.

People play round after round of these games despite not having any sort of progression.

There is temporary progression of a sort in dota.

Either way, the problem for GW2 is that there is a part of the game where there is full blown traditional MMO progression. People play PvE and expect that PvP will be like that. Then they actually do some PvP and feel like their time was essentially wasted.

I have to admit this was also my gut reaction. For me there are times when PvP can be fun. I prefer spontaneous small skirmishes and find battleground type PvP to be extremely frustrating and unfun. The zerginess of WvW is something I can enjoy, but only if we are winning. Losing a zergfest really stinks.

So the one type of PvP i prefer is essentially not available in this game as far as i have been able to tell. That makes PvP more of a chore for me, so in order to get me to do it theres gotta be some kind of payoff. I cant be the only one that feels this way.

News flash: PvP is not for you. No game should go out of its way to give you a reason to do it. If you don’t like it don’t PvP, its really that simple. Let the ppl who love to PvP do it for the fun of it, for the bragging rights, and spend your time doing something else.

A few general points.

1) This is not a subscriber based game. As long as new ppl keep buying the box, ANET is doing fine.

2) Gear based progression rewards time more than ability. Anyone who keeps playing long enough will eventually win enough to have all the best stuff.

3) GW1 did fine competitively, so don’t act like lack of pvp rewards = failure. That’s just silly.

4) There is such a thing has PvP’ing just to be the best. Its called pride. Trust me, if you actually like to compete you need no gear progression. You just need that #1 spot.

5) Reward will probably come in the form of tournaments with actual prizes. Good enough for you?

6) I find too many ppl are concerned with kitten, which is so unhealthy for a metagame its not funny.

7) Gear-based progression is a way of steadily removing the challenge a #1 player would face in PvP, because it forces all of his competition to climb a gear curve. Thats ridiculous. You’re #1 because you have the skills to keep you there, not because your gear makes you impossible to kill.

8) If the game is to be an e-sport, pvp cant have a gear curve. Sports aren’t decided by who has the best gear lol. Michael Jordan didn’t stomp everyone because of his shoes, though commercials made you believe it…at least until you saw all the wannabes with Jordans failing.

9) Too lazy to come up with 10, everything above +1.
