Conclusion
Whilst I have many more things to say, I do believe at this current moment, the 2 points that I have included in this thread and the points on the merged server link thread will sufficiently explain my argument.
I therefore call for an official 2nd poll, now that we’ve all had an experience of the server link, to SCRAP the server link/glicko. Furthermore, it’s likely that the people who didn’t vote in the first poll, may actually vote the 2nd time round due to their own frustrations or love for the server link. This will give them a chance to vote.
Whilst it’s never nice to roll back an update that have had work put into, it takes great leadership to recognise that the server link has caused a lot of controversy and in my opinion, actually raised the minimum players required – see point 2 to even begin to have fun in WvW nowadays. Imagine being a new player in WvW and being run over by a zerg left, right & center.
For those who are struggling to follow my logic in asking for a 2nd poll, I’ll use the following real life scenario:-
1) BREXIT :-
We, in the UK, have voted in a referendum to come out of the EU.
Regardless of your standing (if you’re in the UK or interested in our politics), this comes after years of relationship since the UK has decided to go into the Single Market back in the 1970-1980s.
Back in the day, the UK thought it was a good idea to join the single market (see how the wvw population thought it was a good idea to try out the server link.)
Instead, we have argued for another referendum since we’ve been in the common market and we feel that it’s not good for us (argument for 2nd poll) and that the younger generations feel that they personally haven’t had a voice regarding such a system (more wvw people voting).
Yes, it may hurt to damage the work and relationship we’ve had but it may actually better for us. The successful negotiation and our future requires leadership to see us through this.
Thank you
As some of you may remember, when the server linking was announced, I had made a thread that I believe will be the consequences of the Server Link.
To avoid making this thread longer than necessary, please see below for the [Merged] Thread if you’d like to read my points that I firmly believe still stand:-
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/World-Linking-Feedback-merged/first
Lately, I’ve been keeping track of the WvW forum and it appears that a lot of negative feedback threads are symptoms of the server link.
I firmly believe that after accepting that the server link was accepted, my gf and I have honestly tried to play with the server link and we’ve noticed the following:-
1) Community clashes – Loss of teamwork cohesion
As stated in one of my points, COMMUNITY is very important to WvW.
Currently, the server link bundles 2-3 (sometimes more) active WvW players into one whole playground. Suddenly, you have 2+ communities who are unfamiliar with each other attempting to “work together” to compete.
From OUR experience, in the last 8 months and I do believe I can speak for most of FC as we are a very close (and now also smaller) community, what tends to happen is that the host server will become the dominant and main commanders, and suddenly, the main commanders of the smaller communities (servers) play very little part in the overall success of the match-up.
Now it might just be my view of FC’s wonderful community, but before the server link, we very rarely saw commanders verbally abusing each other (with malicious intention) on map chat, about how well we were doing as a zerg, and instead were supportive (Thus I love FC).
Since the server links, I’ve seen nothing but abuse from egotistical commanders from EVERY server we’ve been linked to so far.
I have personally blocked a large majority of these so called “commanders” and I know that most of FC will have done the same and this results in a lack of teamwork cohesion.
As a result, each server will stick to their own familiar commanders that suits their own vision and skill of what a commander should be doing.
I argue that, before when we had our separate servers, we could have our own separate identities where people could CHOOSE to flourish in either a welcoming community or to my taste, a less welcoming community. AT this current moment, due to server link, we are being unwillingly bundled with communities we simply do not like.
2) WvW for smaller servers
Again with the server link, this has resulted in an increase in active wvw players in active wvw times in our respective servers.
If you’re in a small-medium sized server such as FC, we will most certainly struggle to find the manpower to be able to put up enough numbers to be able to compete against far greater numbers.
Furthermore, there WILL be some of us who do not always want to tag and wish to roam by ourselves capping things.
Since the server link, even a small party of 2-5 will struggle moving out of our spawn point and capping a camp, against a server link with higher active WvW players.
There have been many times in the last few months, we have tried to cap a camp, attempted to move on to find a band of borderland guardians and result in death by superior numbers. We’ll move to a separate direction and suddenly, we die to superior numbers yet again!
Again I argue, while there are WvW players who enjoy following a tag 24/7, there are some of us who enjoy travelling the borderlands doing our own thing as well.
Personally, I love commanding myself, and I thank the support from FC players that show their support in following me whenever I tag, however not every single player in FC, myself included, love to follow a tag or be a tag 24/7.
I thought I’ll give my two cents into this thread as well.
My girlfriend and I have played this game for over 2 years and we have well over 3,500 hours each, 90% of which I would wager is in WvW.
It’s been about a month since I last logged into Guild Wars and quite frankly it’s because of the server linking.
As seen in this thread:-
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/World-Linking-Feedback-merged/first
most of the things that I called out, I believe, has actually happened.
I chose a server that was not too low in population and not too high, a server that was just right, and nowadays we’re linked with servers in T1.
Quite frankly, there’s nothing for me in this game anymore as I can’t even solo a camp without a zerg flying past me.
The only thing that did tempt me back was to talk to my guild mates but even now, I’m struggling to even click the game.
I would argue that how WvW like previously was better for my own gaming perspective.
My girlfriend and I have moved on to playing other mmorpgs but we’ll be keeping an eye on this game with the hope that maybe, just maybe, we’ll be able to have fun in WvW again.
Since it’s seeming increasingly likely that World Linking is going to win the community vote and become a permanent Gw2 feature, the team has been discussing ways to improve the system, especially around further improving population balance, while still allowing players to reliably play with their friends and guildmates.
Hypothetically speaking, if we were to open some additional worlds (and at this point I still don’t know how much work, or how safe a change like that would be), but if we did, would there be player interest in transferring to these new worlds? The new worlds would have lowered population caps, be free to transfer to for a period of time and be immediately linked with existing lower tier worlds..
The ultimate goal of this hypothetical plan would be two-fold:
1) Give players/guilds that are too big for their ‘Full’ status world an opportunity to move to new worlds, enabling them to grow more easily again.
2) Achieve a larger number of smaller worlds that we can link together to achieve more balanced numbers for each team.Again, this isn’t something we necessarily can or will do. The purpose of this post is just to quickly feel out community interest, to see if it was worth spending the time it would take to seriously investigate this option.
*Edit: Updated with some clarifications from below.
Hypothetically speaking, I would like to highlight some points though I AM struggling to find a right way to word it correctly…:-
1) Creating new worlds and it’s similarities to previous state of WvW
Hypothetically speaking, I would be wondering why put in the extra effort and company resources to create the extra worlds, aimed at those people who want a smaller type of WvW, when we had the resources and those exact servers at the previous state of WvW?
To explain it clearer, here’s the scenario:-
In a server linked WvW state
To my understanding, in this current state, the servers will be paired to each other and their population will be similar to playing WvW on higher tiers. In my mind, this is a similar effect as forcing the population of the lower servers into the higher servers.
Now in this state, anybody who would want to enjoy a smaller style of WvW would have to constantly transfer and join these “extra worlds” that are also linked to the paired servers. The Glicko, will then adjust accordingly to ensure that “population-wise” the servers are evenly matched.
Problem then is that the Glicko could decide that these “extra” server with it’s paired servers now have a population deserving of “higher WvW-tiered gameplay”, those same people will have to transfer again.
Anyway, in effect, wouldn’t the hypothetical system simply have the same effect as
allowing “free transfers” in it’s previous state of WvW, where the community could decide on settling on a higher/lower tier server with the comfort of knowing those low/high servers will stay where they are:-
“I want to play in more populated servers with more zergs. I don’t mind the queues” – free transfer to higher servers.
“I want to play in less populated servers with less zergs, I don’t want queues” -
free transfer to lower servers?
I hope this make sense
Nice to see you joining in the discussion.
Va Fail Gwynbleidd.
I’m curious, smashie……specifically how could Anet possibly figure out server pairings based on server attitudes and the people that play on those servers?
What, they would have a bi weekly psychological profile survey of server players to determine what servers might match up best based on their profiles???
I don’t see how Anet can possibly do anything about determining pairings other than it being based on some sort of points/population sort of numbers.
This is an mmorpg, and unfortunately, no matter what is done, one will encounter toxic players. That is not the game makers fault…..that one lies solely on the playerbase.
Whenever one encounters toxic players, all you can do is to ignore/block/report them. But if you have a solid, workable idea on how they could accomplish server pairings based on mutual likeability of those servers…..I would love to read that idea.
And to me, is one of the key flaws of the server link.
It has opened up a whole can of problems that I feel Anet didn’t have to solve. In the previous state of WvW it was the communities themselves, the people, who decided whether or not they wanted to stay in the server with such a “toxic community”.
You’ve read my first post on the world linking thread. We chose to farm the gold, convert the gems, and move from our previous server that didn’t fit us.
Instead, with this server link and it’s continuous rotation, we don’t have that choice or stability to move to another server if we wished to. Instead, we can now only…hope!
(Can we be paired with TC? I’m kind of jealous with their relationship with Kain
)
So maintaining wvw communities, no matter how small they might be, is more important to you than maintaining and/or increasing the number of wvw players, and therefore, playability/action?
And yea, I wish you could be in the pairing we(Kaineng) are in. TC, for the most part, is a bunch of really nice people, and a lot of fun to wvw with. They appreciate us, and we appreciate them.
Not quite. You’ll simply be drawing your own conclusions from my responses.
Anyway in response to that, it’s up to the WvW community and the WvW team to decide whether or not the feedback I’ve provided about our situation.
A case study of (I feel) a normal couple who are active in WvW, who love WvW, who love the community they were in, have played WvW and enjoyed WvW for the majority of the 2 years we’ve been in-game.
A case study of an unfortunate pairing.
A case study of the unforeseen consequences of the server link.
Edit:- @ Teon – if you haven’t already, I have also edited my previous post feel free to comment.
Edit 2:- @ Teon – in response to your edited “authoritative poll”,
I quote my previous post:-
“Yes, at the moment, it appears that most of the pairings are more than happy to continue with this concept and look at some improvements on this concept. However, it’s likely that those particular pairings, being the first pairings, haven’t experienced our not-so-fortunate experience.”

Edit:-
Not to discredit the work of the WvW team neither, but it was also stated, that any plans ideas that could’ve taken more than 6 months to make to help solve the WvW “stagnation/decline/erosion/[insert your desired word here]” was and I quote:- “off the table.”
For me personally, most changes but this server link has caused so many problems for my girlfriend (technical issues such as laptop specs) and our fun (see points on world linking threads).
I also feel, it is certainly not my job etc. to find a solution to the WvW problems that persists. I have no knowledge, experience or skills to effectively offer an idea that is realistic etc. I find it quite astonishing that people constantly ask people for their ideas in situations like these.

Thank you Tyler and Chris for the additional information.
I have to say, even with the changes that are undesirable to ME, I welcome the communication and effort of the WvW teamI hope this continues to go on.
Even with the additional information you’ve given us, I still have a problem that I’d like to see addressed. Unfortunately, it’s quite a brutal point in my opinion but a point that needs to be raised.
1) Toxicity and the effects on the community
If many of the WvW posters in the forum are anything to go by, there are many individuals here who constantly berate people of their idea of WvW, their idea of “blobbing”, what WvW should be, or how “server pride” or whatever reason you’d like to include.
The very same people are also telling people to quit the game or WvW.
Speaking for my girlfriend and I, we simply do not want to play with these players.
And I’m fairly certain that many other people would feel the same way.Problem with the server link, because it’s going to be updated quarterly or whatever the timescale is, there’s a danger of being linked with server with THOSE people. If the toxicity of each server gets to server wide instead of just individual spats, the teamwork that’s required to play WvW is completely eroded. The match-up for that duration will stale. Only the server with those individuals will continue playing.
That’s why, it’s still a resounding no for me
At the previous state of WvW, had we chosen a server with that kind of toxicity, we simply would have upped and left, if we had the gems.
Now, with the updates, we can’t even stay in one server and hop to another one, just in-case, the Glicko decides that we should be linked with the server we desired to leave behind.I ask many of you to consider this scenario.
Perhaps it’s a very pessimistic view, but at the moment, it’s happening right now in my server. Thanks for your measured response not claiming to represent an unidentified majority.
Your particular linked pair of worlds may be having a rougher time of things than most. By world, you’re among one or ones that have a higher than average percentage of “No” votes. So I’m hopeful it’s something more to do with your particular pairing, rather than something with linking itself, or with any specific players. Time and a change of linked worlds will help tell.
As a reminder, please do report anyone engaging in toxic behavior. There’s little immediate feedback beyond that player’s chat being blocked for you, but reports do help.
Whatever happens, please address the ‘guest’ server identity in any ways which are feasible, and the more the better – in fact do away with the host/guest concept and treat both servers as partners. If we flip a keep, messages should show the server majority who flipped it – if that’s not feasible, then list both servers. Sounds petty but it really isn’t; this would go a fair way towards addressing morale problems in T7-8.
Not to disagree with the idea that server identity is important, but something that’s been interesting to see is that “guest” worlds are tending to have higher ratios of “Yes” votes in favor of keeping world linking. Which I’m definitely seeing as more of a “this improves my day-to-day gameplay”, and not as a “I don’t care about my world identity”.
One problem with showing both world names is that the strings of text can get very long. When/if more than two worlds are linked together, it gets very long. Much too long for the UI.
I do like the idea of showing, for example, “Devona’s Rest captured Durios Gulch”, if Devona’s Rest had more members involved in capturing the objective. Though for the moment this isn’t among our top priorities. Such a change requires programming support, and right now we’re mostly focused on the large task of scoring improvements previously voted on.
Thank you very much for the compliment and for responding directly to my posts.
As you can imagine, it’s quite difficult to raise a point without adding the “unidentified majority” into it.
I would like to respond directly to the point of the “Rougher Pairing”.
I will absolutely be inclined to agree with anyone who points this out, that a likely reason for our (girlfriend included) dislike for this server link IS influenced by our particular pairing.
However, it is BECAUSE of that reason, we do not wish the Glicko to continuously decide that the servers it decides to pair, may end up not pairing WELL with each other.
Yes, at the moment, it appears that most of the pairings are more than happy to continue with this concept and look at some improvements on this concept. However, it’s likely that those particular pairings, being the first pairings, haven’t experienced our not-so-fortunate experience.
Should the Glicko decide the pairings and end up having the “unfortunate pairing (s)”, WvW will simply become un-enjoyable for those servers. As the WvW team may have noticed within a day of pairing, bickering amongst our particular servers have only increased in the forum, and it’s must worse in game.
Diverging a bit I would like to point out, that I’ve also noticed that some of the posters have often mentioned that this server link is at least “some sort of improvement to WvW.” This makes me feel like that our WvW community may pretty much accept any improvements to WvW because we finally have a WvW team that is finally doing something about the game-mode.
That is why I also feel some of the people who dislike the current server link may vote “yes” simply because it’s “something”.
In the case of a “smoother pairing”
I would like to point out that even if we do have a smoother pairing, the points I have raised on the merged “World Linking Feedback” thread, those points then apply to this situation.
Again, thank you very much for responding to my posts.
The WvW gamemode means a lot to my girlfriend and I, and the community that we’ve decided to play with has helped us enjoy life just that bit more. It would be really saddening to see it being eroded by unfortunate pairings, which is why we’re so passionate about this.
We tend not to report people who are toxic to us particularly because we understand they, themselves, may have their own communities who like them etc. We don’t wish to cause too much drama and we will simply be quite British about it
Thank you Tyler and Chris for the additional information.
I have to say, even with the changes that are undesirable to ME, I welcome the communication and effort of the WvW teamI hope this continues to go on.

Perhaps it’s a very pessimistic view, but at the moment, it’s happening right now in my server.I do apologize that you have dealt with that and is the main reason I say the biggest thing hurting wvw is that is so small and has a very quick glass ceiling of how many people can play on your side at a given time. If someone’s play time already sees a lot of queue they are not going to be welcoming to new people as they are potentially one more person in queue keeping you from wvw. EotM does not count in many wvw players eyes as anything more than a place to farm wxp and now reward track while they wait. They don’t go there expecting actual play or organization just pure k train.
Back to the OP I do encourage you to give the servers more of a chance. Find the commanders you like and follow them. I think there are only 5-7 commanders I will follow because they aren’t complete jerks demanding we all run specific builds or whining when an encounter gites south about how much anyone not in the ts sucks and ate making us fail. Find those good commanders and you will have a much better stay
There’s absolutely no need for YOU to apologise.
Regarding your point about giving servers a chance:-
- The problem still exists whether or not you give the servers a chance or if you find those commanders.
As of this moment, with the current server link and the rotation of servers, it’ll just be luck if you’re linked with a server with a community of nice and active people with kind-hearted and good commanders.
Each server will be relying on the Glicko and hope that the servers you’re going to be linked with will not have a toxic community. Each server will be hoping that they will have a community they can rely on, play with, and have fun with!
As of this moment, those posters that berate others, I simply don’t want to be linked with them.
It doesn’t matter how good those players think they are.
If they have such negative traits and attitudes and opinions towards players such as ourselves, I certainly won’t go on TS, I certainly won’t follow you and I certainly don’t want to command you, and quite simply I wouldn’t want to WvW with you.
Many of us will have already seen some of the posters here, with their names and servers on their signature, and many of us will have wondered:-
“Are we linked with these guys? What if we’re linked together next time? Can we work together?”
If the current server link also continues to change linkings, we wouldn’t even be able to transfer to another server indefinitely because the linkings might simply put us together again.
As of this moment, if the polls reflect the opinion as of today, many of you have had a good time with the server link. But what about next time? or the time after that?
As stated before, my server is currently experiencing the above. Even if we are the only server who’s had a negative experience about the server link, would any of you want to be in our situation?
Thank you Tyler and Chris for the additional information.
I have to say, even with the changes that are undesirable to ME, I welcome the communication and effort of the WvW team I hope this continues to go on.

Okay, well if it is the official poll then so be it.
I’ve asked my guild and the word is spreading about the wvw poll.
I’ve also updated the 1st post of this thread with the link so anyone looking at the thread first time, please visit and vote no if you dislike the server link.
Keeping the linking is currently winning the poll. It should have been placed in the WvW subforum (as mentioned in another thread).
But where about’s did this poll originate from?
I can’t seem to find it anywhere?
Because of that, and simply because there’s not an ANET logo/response, I’m not sure if I trust the link.
I’m sure some of us have already seen it, but there’s currently a WvW poll about the server link.
Is this an actual, safe, official poll?
Well it’s nearly been 3 weeks since the server merge.
I would like to point out our current views as of today.
My girlfriend and I have definitely started to play less GW2 and enjoy it less as a result of the server merge.
We don’t feel like we’re having fun in WvW and we find ourselves staying in Lions Arch for hours, or end up fractalling. But even after all that, we just turn our attention into farming gold…
We do feel quite sad as we feel alienated from WvW, for reasons posted in the first post, and with regards to the server we’re currently linked with.
Time after time, we constantly feel put off by unfamiliar faces with their personalities that alienate us, as well as feeling like we step on people’s toes. It DOES feel like walking on broken glass sometimes and constantly reminds us of the original server we left from.
Anyway, I thought I should post this as some sort of “on-going feedback” to the WvW team.
Personally, I understand that this “Glicko” system needs a few weeks i.e. a quarter to ensure that the tiers become better matched up, but at this rate…I feel certain that people like my girlfriend and I will continue to be alienated until this system stabilises at least.
I would like to continue insisting on the earliest opportunity for the poll about the WvW server link and then if polls show that the link isn’t a good idea, please reverse this asap.
Until then, we’ll be patiently waiting for the ultimate result and finding some other entertainment to occupy us…
As a joke (well a little bit)- Please do this so I don’t have to watch more talent shows
In the coming weeks we plan to hold more polls. Just like we are currently polling about the Reward Tracks and Participation beta, we’ll poll about the World Linking beta as well.
Thank you very much for posting on here Tyler!
I am very much looking forward to the polls and since I know about it, I’m sure my gf and I will actively promote this opportunity to others in FC to vote on it!
With that said, I’d like to point out one thing about the polls to the WvW community:-
Population skew-ness
It stands to think that Tier’s 1 to 3, would likely not be deterred by the Server Merge. As their tiers are quite accepting and more used to larger population, increases in queues etc. they are likely to vote, “I don’t have a problem with Server Merge.”
Furthermore, they have a BIG population.
It’s quite possible that tiers 1-3 could outnumber tiers 6-8 quite easily…and might outnumber tiers 4-5 as well.
Not to forget, there could be a significant minority in the lower tiers who fit the above culture of WvW, therefore voting that the server merge is also okay!
It’s entirely possible that the poll COULD then show a majority in favour of the server merge. However, I argue that polls can also show a significant minority, and that the significant minority can also still be heard.
Example:- If the majority turns out to 51% liking the server merge, I believe ANet would still attempt to cater to the other 49% who dislike the server merge.
Why? Because even though many in the forums will argue, “Well, we got the majority so you should be quiet etc.”, I believe ANet tries to cater as many people as possible to enjoy the game. Anyway, if the above example does happen, I’m sure ANet won’t like many of the 49% to leave the game!
Bear in mind, knowing what some of you are like, the above is only an example and I’m not speaking for 49% of the community!
With that said, if we can’t get a majority, I would still call it a success if we can achieve quite a large, significant minority!!!
SO! I now encourage people who dislike the server merge to actively promote the upcoming WvW Server Merge poll and vote NO!
I certainly will be doing this in FC.
Thank you all for posting and thanks again Tyler for responding to it It means a lot!
Edit: Just noticed there was a new poll. Clarified which poll I was referring to
(edited by smashie.3074)
Now, after years of waiting, we have a chance to fix these problems. And you guys, instead of being happy too about the gamemode we all love so much, start to complain against any improvements. It just blows my mind. It really does. Just because you want something, everyone else has to suffer too. It’s just extremely selfish.
And on top of that all, you do not even propose any other solutions. You just complain that all the change is bad and try to lie about how everyone loved their dead servers. No, everyone hated it! Everyone suffered for a long time and many left in the end. Again, there are obviously small number of players used to empty server matches, but it does not make you more special then many more players who actually want to fight and want to have meaningful matches and want to see enemies more then once a week. What exactly do you wish Anet would do? Nothing? Just keep the system going on for many more years until there is only you and 2 more players left in whole WvW?
Spot on, thank you for that. Hit it on the head.
And have also come to realize that one of the reasons the OP liked low populated wvw areas was not necessarily due just to ‘community’ and such, but also due to the fact that his gf’s low end laptop can’t handle any sort of significant number of players in the game, even on the lowest graphical settings, and that he just won’t accept any sort of queues.
The OP states in his first post “As an inside joke…I am new to WvW after all”…….and that couldn’t be more obvious in some of his posts in this thread.
I have to also completely agree with Fogleg’s above post that you quoted.
At the moment, it feels like many of you are trying to discredit our post, simply because you’re using things that we’ve pointed out to conclude to your own satisfaction i.e. computer specifications = why we chose low level server and/or “inside joke:- I’m new to wvw” = I’m not actually an experienced WvW player.
Continue this debate in that way if you wish.
In my opinion, I would imagine that most people in the WvW community are sensible and know that, the points we’ve pointed out ARE valid and that many has already reinforced it.
Anyway, I’m just looking at the thread and responding now and there but I’m simply quite happy for the thread to have lasted this long, drawing some users who posts and discuss both sides of this debate.
Thanks all for posting.
I encourage people to voice their concerns still if the server link is a good idea/not a good idea.
I have come up with another problem of the server merge:-
Computer Specifications
Due to the population increases in WvW, there is obviously more zergs around to fight.
Recently, when I commanded, with my darling playing beside me, we were fighting zerg after zerg after zerg.
As this repeated throughout the night, my gf noted that her laptop was getting hotter and hotter…to the point it overheated and the laptop completely shut off. This isn’t the first time it’s happened amongst huge zergs, as we’ve noticed it before when she tried to join in with Dragon Stand and her laptop couldn’t handle the zergs. I have thus, bought her an external fan, which have worked wonders but the recent WvW server merge have now also created this problem.
Now, we personally can’t afford a new laptop/pc and, I can only imagine that not many people in the WvW community will simply get up and buy new gear to play GW2. Furthermore, it feels a bit like a slap in the face to those people who have invested in GW2 (time, gold, gems or money) for such a long time, or even a short time, to find out that they have to upgrade. I can only imagine how it feels to those people bought a minimum spec. laptop/pc just to play GW2.
Before the server merge (and when we chose to enter a lower tier server so as to match OUR computer specifications), the individual server could accommodate to our needs (r.e. see first post for more detail)and computer specifications so we could both still enjoy WvW…
Now since the server merge, it has only created another problem amongst other problems as I have stated.Unless you have spent some serious money on an actual gaming laptop, it is just silly to expect a laptop to run this mmorpg well. I have a lower end Toshiba laptop myself, with an amd A8 cpu and a decent radeon mobile integrated gpu…..frankly, I am surprised it even runs the game. I use it occasionally for the game…..I turn the graphics all the way down, and it does pretty good…..and yea, it gets pretty hot. But I don’t expect much better from it for gaming. If you have a sub $1k laptop, I wouldn’t expect much from it in the way of running this game. If it runs the game, and you can do medium graphics on it, then you’re doing pretty good for that price point.
Complaining to Anet that your laptop can’t run the game very well isn’t really a very high priority topic for them, imo. You have problems with large zergs in the new pairings on that laptop, and can’t go to more abandoned wvw where the laptop did ok…..so what did you do when you participated in large boss mob battles in pve on that laptop?
And as for your comment on how horrible it must be for people with min spec pcs/laptops……..keep in mind that these sorts of games are never created for minimum spec pcs/laptops. If you want the game to run nicely, you have to have some decent hardware, especially if the game evolves and improves over the years.
Now, if you would like to see the game engine get improved to dx11/12 and run with a higher priority on the gpu, rather than the cpu, I would be in complete agreement. But that still wouldn’t help my laptop much……would just make the game run a lot better on my higher end desktop.
Hello, thanks for posting.
I’m afraid I feel that I need to clarify my point just that bit further.
The point I was getting across is that before the server merge, we had one, rarely two small-medium sized (i.e. ~20ish zergs), which appeared in tiers 5/6, and were suitable for my gf’s laptop. Her laptop was fairly market priced in the region of £500+ a year ago and yet it was only suitable for those sort of sizes.
To answer your question about the PVE, what she would do before I got the fan, was simply not play it.
In the eyes of every consumer, when each and every one of us have paid and invested in the game, particularly when you HAVE and thought you could continue to enjoy every aspect of it, it’s certainly fairly upsetting when your favourite game suddenly moved to a project where suddenly, you can’t play or enjoy the game to its fullest.
Of course, I could ask you what we should do instead?
Accept the situation and simply not enjoy WvW as we could before?
Or save up enough for a brand new laptop/computer to enjoy the game as we had before?
Personally, I don’t think those questions are acceptable or should even be asked simply because of this server merge. Those sort of questions shouldn’t really pop up, particularly not for players who’ve invested into this game. Simply the investment alone, should be enough for Anet to be aware that the game should be able to accommodate the computer specs of all levels of consumers of this game.
Certainly, it could actually infringe on some advertising issues if the minimum specs the game is offering can’t actually run it, but I’m diverging and have no wish to continue further with this point.
As I’m aware many of you reading this thread for the first time may not read every post.
So I’d like to reiterate a few points:-
The server merge is probably good for the very lowest tiers i.e. 7 & 8.
In these servers, it’s likely that the population is very low. The WvW community of those servers may actually accept a loss of identity, culture & community to enjoy a better WvW experience and have fun with larger zergs.
My thread is about servers like FC, who have their own unique identities, culture and community.
My gf and I, many FC players who we’ve talked to, some posters here have already voiced concerns that this merge isn’t right for us.
The point I’m getting at is that, comparing BG & ET (most common theme here), and comparing it to DH & FC merge, is like comparing apples and oranges.
Servers that have appeared on this thread, such as ET & Kaineng, WERE amongst the lowest servers. The merge for these guys, were probably the best news they’ve heard ever since the perception of WvW dying has begun.
However, I’m appealing for tier 4-6 servers, servers who enjoyed WvW but are on the lower side of the population, to show their concern that a server merge/link that encompasses all these servers, is not so great.
To those arguing that we should accept queues etc. simply isn’t acceptable. My gf and I, many in FC, and some who have posted on this thread, moved from a server and strived to stay away from servers that had even the possibility of a queue and chose to go to a lower server. Anyway I won’t go to this further because I have written about all of this on the first post.
Hi TorquedSoul,
I’m not sure if you can do this, but I would imagine this takes into account the server merge i.e DH representing both DH and FC?
I was wondering if you have the data for the weeks prior to the merge?
Reason I’m asking:-
1) I would expect that the server merge, if people enjoyed the server merge, the activity for the merged servers would increase vastly.
If…however, it is the contrary, I would expect only a small increase in contribution…if at all.
Whilst I’m aware that the current data will show both efforts of both FC and DH, I hope you understand the reasons I’m asking
A PM or instructions as to how to get these data myself is appreciated
Thanks
Seen a couple of these threads now, just a couple opinions of my own. Everyone deserves to play the game they want the way they want, but people have to keep some things in mind.
The wvw section is meant to be server vs server vs server. It was meant to have maps populated, to only see 3-5 people on those huge maps is kind of a waste, in the early days of wvw queues lasted more than just reset night. There is room for all types of play styles, defender, roamer, havoc, zerg, blob, but it’s up to the player to make it happen.
Right now in T4 you mostly will find a queue at reset for a few hours, that is perfectly acceptable to me because it’s the start of a new match and players are excited and come out for it. They know they will get good fights and enjoy themselves, but it’s pretty much always been like that for reset night. The rest of the week the queues exist in ebg but not a long wait time, sometimes on a bl in prime, really T4 is not that different from the mid tiers before HoT. Once Alpine returns it should also help make the roaming experience better.
The server linking is really no different than a bunch of guilds moving onto your server, which many servers have experienced at this point. There’s nothing you can do about it other than greet them, be nice, and try to work together, in a few months they may even leave, in this case they will for sure when they unlink in 3 months.
As for the linking of servers that have big NA numbers, it can’t really be helped, since there really isn’t a lot of sea/ocx player around other than the high tiers, a lot of them had stacked on SoS and JQ. It’s going to be difficult to balance most tiers around those players in the mid to lower tiers, since mostly north americans play on the north american servers, probably won’t matter much who’s linked as most of NA prime zones will now be stacked anyways.
Yes every server has their own identity which they have built through in game and out with forums and teamspeak, the server name is part of that identity sure, but at the end of the day that community in and out of the game is what it’s all about. All Anet did was provide a place to build that community and gave you a name for it. If that server/community really wants to stick together you can even call a certain map or two out to be the one to hang out for the matchup. It’s really up to the players to keep that identity going before and after the linking.
It sucks that T8 got thrown into T1 I’m sure, since players stayed in T8 for a reason. Maybe they should unlink T1 and T8 and leave those two as single server matchups, if players want to zerg all day long move to T1 like they already had been, if they just want smaller fights and less hectic action and queues, move to T8.
Thank you for posting.
I absolutely agree with you that WvW’s intended person is server vs server vs server.
And I absolutely agree with you that it is a waste of a server if (although probably exaggerated, I get your point) very few people play WvW on those servers.
As pointed out in my first post, I would typically imagine servers like these to be in tier 7-tier 8.
With that in mind, I actually would agree with a merge of some sort, of servers in tiers 7-8, if those servers wishes (highlighting here, a lack of communication about these server merges).
However, the server I am only representing is Ferguson’s Crossing. Ferguson’s Crossing’s population, culture, community is VASTLY different to what one can only imagine in tier 7/8. Other posters on this thread, both good and bad, will hopefully be representing similar servers in a similar situation as Ferguson’s Crossing, all voicing their concern/appreciation about this server merge.
Furthermore, as pointed out by yourself, you have also highlighted basically the COVERAGE problem in WvW. Simply merging ALL the servers as they are now, even though it may change in 3 months time more or less, is not a good way to go about this. Not to mention that the change itself simply causes another sort of instability to servers on all levels.
What I would argue in this situation is simply to do this change gradually, instead of a sudden merge, with more communication and awareness of the population, culture and community of each WvW server. Whilst I am also eager for vast improvements in WvW, I don’t think this is the way to go…as already it has impacted our lives (my gf and I), many in my server, and many people who’s posted against this.
I have come up with another problem of the server merge:-
Computer Specifications
Due to the population increases in WvW, there is obviously more zergs around to fight.

Now since the server merge, it has only created another problem amongst other problems as I have stated.
(edited by smashie.3074)
This is the play style that I enjoy playing; if I wanted to play the way T1 servers do, I would have transferred there a long time ago. We stayed on FC because we love the community, we love fighting for our server, and we love the play style. All of these things have been irreparably changed or completely taken away by the server merges. While I can only explicitly write for myself, I know that a lot of people on both FC and other low pop servers feel the same way.
Get used to it. I really doubt if we’re going to see low pop wvw anytime soon again, at least not until people start leaving the game again down the road.
And I too, can use highly scientific(sarcasm) methods for stating that I have talked to lots of other players, and my T8 server is absolutely loving the numbers in wvw, again. Sure, the ques take some getting used to, but there are now actually lots of people playing in wvw, again!
WvW was never meant to be some semi deserted area where a few people could just casually roam around looking for small battles to engage in. WvW is about all out war, and large groups of players engaging each other while havoc and smaller groups try to create chaos on the edges.
I am truly sorry you miss the days of deserted wvw(remember, I come from a T8 server, so I know what it was like out there before this patch). I am sorry you miss being able to have tiny group battles with the time to converse and hobknob with your community about what a beautiful day it is in Eternal Battlegrounds.
I have a feeling that your attitude about it all is most likely in the minority. If it wasn’t, wvw wouldn’t currently be going gung ho, with ques, and players wanting to go at it so bad that they’re gnashing their teeth.
And if Anet truly wanted WvW to appeal to a portion of the player base that just wanted small little encounters, single roaming, and small group battles…..they would have just created EB and been done with it. No reason to put all that effort into the borderlands or edge of the mists.
Oh yea, that’s right…..remember the original reason for EotM? It was to provide a wvw area that players could be in while waiting to get through the ques for EB and the borderlands. That was back when wvw was actually alive, like it is now, again.
Frankly, I have no desire to go back to the wvw ghost town that Kaineng had become.
I now love being on Kaineng and having some real battles, fights, and an actual war to participate in as a player. I sure hope Anet continues in the direction that they are currently on with wvw.
If you’re enjoying the new server merge and there are many WvW players in your server enjoying it too, then that’s great news.
However, allow me to state this point first.
1) I firmly believe that WvW is whatever each individual server wanted it to be, and not what it was intended for.
For example, the internet was probably intended to help facilitate communication between computers etc. but we, society, has shaped the internet to what it is now, be it good and bad.
What I’m trying to point out is that, your server, will most likely have a different culture, different community to what FC will have.
I have no doubt in my mind that given the choice, some lower tier servers will desire a different type of culture of WvW and thus accept their loss of identity, their community, their culture of WvW, to be part of another culture that better fits their taste. After all, on a smaller scale, that’s why many individuals and guilds transfer from different servers to another. If that’s the case, good luck to them and all the best.
However, the forced server merge of every server, has forced FC (and I can only speak for myself and our server) to lose all those attributes that are important to us.
*2) I would also like to point out that the more likely reason for the increase in queues is simply this:-
Before the server merge, there were 2 seperate active WvW populations, sharing 2 different queue slots, in 2 seperate servers. Both were able to go and play on a BL of their own choosing without worrying about queues.
After the server merge, the same 2 active WvW population, now share 1 queue, in one server.
Even if the queue were increased slightly, it would have to increase by a large amount to accommodate everyone.
3) While I’m sure those in FC will appreciate your desire to not go back to the ghost town of Kainneng, I’m sure you can also appreciate that our desires are different to yours and that we will attempt to voice our concerns on here
Thanks for posting on here though and please continue to do so. It helps bring perspectives and not cause a one sided argument.
I personally would like to add another criticism to the server merge:-
Commanding
As seen in my first post, I take great pleasure in commanding fellow Fergs in WvW.
However, I’ve come up with another problem, caused by the server merge.
When attempting to hold a guild run on the weekends, as we usually do, we could ALL enter any borderland which we desire to enter to.
Since the forced merge, we’ve actually had to say “we can’t enter EBG because of the queues…and we can’t enter that BL because of the queues”.
This has forced myself and others in the guild to stick to ONE borderland.
Instead of being able to move to a borderland we see fit, the server merge has forced us to be quite restricted.
I am mostly ok with stuff Fates Intertwined posted, but again, common mistake of trying to increase the value of individual opinion by claiming to be representing group of people:
“We are not a whole bunch of isolated individuals unhappy with the loss of our community. We are a community unhappy with the loss of our identity. "
Thing is, it is you who is unhappy. At best it is you and couple of your buddies. Or some members of your guild. Or few people constantly repeating same thing on map chat.
I can quarantee it is not everyone in your server. Unless you have already completed extensive analysis of whole population of your server pre- and after-linking system. Which I doubt because analysing large amount of data takes time and you only had 1 week to complete it.
In reality, some players in your server are happy and some are unhappy. Just like it was before the linking. There is no way everyone feels exactly same about everything. And please, please, don’t attempt to even talk about how other servers feel about the change.
I recommend to take a look at OP again. If you would also start your personal comment with words “how my gf and I currently feel”, then all would be fine. But now it sounds you either do not actually know what you are talking about or you lie.
I’m afraid I don’t agree with everything you’ve said on there either.
Let me point them out individually, including ones I agree with.
1) Research
You’re right. We haven’t got the tools, time, patience to carry out the extensive research you would like to us to show you.
However, one must stick to his principles, and if you’d like us to show you “our results” so to speak, then it’s only fair that we also ask you to show YOUR results and hold you to that point. However, I don’t think we’ll be seen as unreasonable if we don’t.
2) The use of “we”
I think Anet and the rest of the community will still understand Fate’s message without being misguided by the use of “we”.
As such may I point out that we also stated that we are a close community, almost like family and that Fate also clearly stated that “we are not a bunch of isolated individuals.”
After all it is logical to think that in a server of our size, we active WvW players will see & read about people’s thoughts, via our guilds, map chat etc. With that said, we are such a close community that when any of us speak out in public, each and everyone of us will have the backing from each other. So rest assured, the use of “we”, in FC will pretty much represent a large majority of us.
However, I feel that you, Fog, will continue to disagree with the use of “we”, without us being able to show you results/proof that we can speak for a significant majority of FC and prove that they are unhappy.. That is in my mind, unrealistic. However, as an alternative way, I personally will continue to convince people to post as sign of proof as I’m sure Fate will.
May I also point out that we (my gf and I) didn’t speak for the server at first simply because we were simply setting an example and wanting people to criticise our set of clear reasons for why the server merge isn’t good, instead of having our use of grammar being an obstacle.
3) Double Standards
Whilst this may feel like a slight personal dig, I would like to point out several double standards in your arguments.
3a)I’ve already talked about the need for results being provided by both sides of the argument, that is if you’d like us to create extensive results etc. so I won’t go back into that.
3b) You stated and I quote:-
“please, please, don’t attempt to even talk about how other servers feel about the change.”
I find it quite hypocritical that you attempted to stop us from talking about how other servers feel when you quite happily stated and I quote:-
“I can quarantee it is not everyone in your server. "
You, yourself, have literally tried to speak for “happy” WvW players in Ferguson’s Crossing…a server you do not reside in and a server you are attempting to speak for…and then say we shouldn’t do the exact same thing.
Anyway, I hope you’ll slowly find that the voices of those against the server merge will come to light eventually.
Please all continue to post your thoughts about the server merge, both good and bad.
Hi, I am from Darkhaven and tonight we have a server meeting at 9pm est. So I would really appreciate if you and your gf join us during the server meeting because those some of the issues I personally will be talking about
I can only say that I will attempt to attend…as it will be 2am for us in the UK
Thanks for the invitiation.
If you’d like, please feel free to pm me in the forums or in-game
Thanks
Thank you all for posting. Please continue to encourage people to voice their opinions, both who agree with the server merge and disagree with the merge on the forums…
Yeah, I think the changes have been good for the WvW and I will continue to fight for these changes (they can be improved or changed obviously). Sure, no change can please everyone same way, but in this case I strongly believe it is improving whole WvW, and it is not only about me.
I still would like to hear how you would fix the WvW without linking the servers. Even if it is just a vague idea.
Honestly, any idea I come up, I’ve also put down because there’s so many things that could go wrong.
What I do disagree on is the SUDDEN merge within itself.
With complete disregard of my reasons above (see first post), no choice, no communication was given as to whether or not we wanted a merge or if we wanted to be merged with our current matched servers.
It’s like suddenly having two countries merged as one country, together and expecting them to work equally well, with equal opportunities etc. From Macedonian Empire to the fall of the Great British Empire to the current European Union, when a stronger (in this instance more populated server) consumes the weaker ones (i.e. the lower populations), their independent communities will be lost.
Some may enjoy the larger communities, some may not…but we don’t have a choice in this matter when in all honesty, we really should have.
As such, may I point that you have also pointed out that many similar threads have propped up. Surely this shows that the server merge HAS caused issues. I don’t think that you can speak for every person in the lower tiers or “dead” servers that this server merge is a good idea.
Absolutely. Linking has issues. Some links could be changed for example, I am sure.
I am not trying to speak for everyone, and yet, I have seen so many happy players in the WvW during this beta, none of them btw ever posting in forums, that I feel their excitement and enjoyment should not be overlooked either.
Also, people usually do not bother to post about stuff they like. They commonly only come to forum to complain about things they do not like (well, for example, you). Is the 10 unhappy players posting against the linking a sign that idea is bad? Or perhaps we should consider hundreds and thousands of players logging into WvW every day, playing it for many hours straight, never even considering to complain about the change?
I understand your point of view.
In this case, I would argue that we stand on opposite side of the spectrum, both eager for improvements but unsure of the results. On your side, it feels that this is A GOOD THING, as you’ve said yourself that there are happy WvW players. On my side, however…I can say my gf and I aren’t happy…other WvW players on my server are unhappy as well.
However, neither of us know the extent of how happy or unhappy we are. Hence, I AM encourage others to try and make their voices heard.
And you are correct. People don’t often post about things they like. However…there are also people like us…who don’t post about things we don’t like.
Take for example:-
1) The Desert Borderlands – We hated it. Yet we didn’t post anything about it. Why? Perhaps other people loved it. If not, they’ll voice it in forums themselves…voices who are capable of being heard and aren’t afraid of being heard. Don’t forget…we’re introverts so we don’t like bringing attention to ourselves or causing trouble…thus we stayed quiet.
If the WvW community loved it, the DBLs would’ve stayed as it is.
As such, the WvW community HAS spoken and the Alpine BLs are coming back (yay)
2) The Waypoints – Before it changed back to having all 3 WPs in our BLs etc…we only had one. We hated that too. Yet we stayed quiet for the reasons above.
Of course, these are only SOME of the problems we had issues with. And I’d like to think that our tastes are not so unique from others but are actually more in line with the common WvW players.
As I’ve stated before, this post is my first post on this forum. It is however, because my gf and I feel that this is a HUGE problem. WvW is our end-game, and we’ve yet to enjoy ourselves in the new “community”. We’ve also experienced some…undesired comments which has reminded us of the server we’ve left before.
If it results in us leaving then so be it…but whilst we still have a voice and would like to raise that voice, we have posted here as result.
May I quickly quote another user who’s posted here as well:-
First off, congrats for being able to play with your gf. Your story/journey reads almost exactly like mine. I get to play with my Fiance, we both chose SF as our home, been in wvw for 2.5 years, came to love almost all our teammates, took the move up to T5 as it came and didn’t mind losing, but we’re both really wary of going any higher because of population and the fact that some of our most dedicated people stopped playing when we rose above certain tiers. T5/T6 was perfect in our minds. The pairing we got, shocked me at first, it really was the last one I expected. Culture wise, the people of NSP for the most part have been accepting and not toxic. It’s really like the first day of school, you flock to those you know and maybe male some new friends along the way. But, in my head, I definately had a different picture of this server.
Population wise, on its Best and worst day I simply couldn’t believe there was ever a time people found that fun.
I sympathize with the roamers that came from T7/T8, but I’m thankful my server wasn’t or hasn’t yet been paired with a higher server.
For me, after learning how to play and finding my grove, it was never about coverage or winning, sure it was nice to, and if my teammates wanted a push, of course Id help, but moving up the ranks, pushing for T2? Wasnt top priority to me personally. I enjoyed leisurely roams, capping towers with 2 people, the thrill of being spotted by 5 enemies and engaging in 5v2s. I haven’t had any of that this week.
Please note the last few sentences. If many of us are only beginning to post, even if it’s to just criticise in the forums, to raise our voices about this issue…our posts really should be taken into account Fog. Regardless of how often we post on forums.
Thank you all for posting.
Please allow me to reiterate, clarify and respond to some of you.
Each person enjoys certain things, while I would like to see a variety of options for wvwvw play that is not what has drawn this post.
When posters use the words “everyone XX” they are almost certainly lying. How do I know this, they have neither asked me or paid attention to what I do in game.
next
Please when you post, stick to personal opinion, it is very likely we do not speak for everyone, it is very likely we do not represent everyone. I feel this because I have not asked everyone for their opinion, and very very few have asked me for mine.
Yes the game feels different after the linking. I would give it some time but many have noted differences both positive and negative.
Good luck, I hope you can find the enjoyment necessary for you to stay in this game.
I would first like to point out that you are correct.
Many posters DO attempt to include the population into their argument when in fact, all of us would likely not have had an input unless you’ve made a post.
With that being said, I would like to point out this sentence:-
Whilst we would like to speak for our server, we will not as we of course do not speak for any of them but ourselves.
This thread is literally the thoughts of my girlfriend and I. As such, where we both have had an agreement, I have used “we” meaning only my girlfriend and I. Again we do not speak for anybody for ourselves, even for our server. With that being said we HAVE had input from other players from OUR server (some have posted too) and we decided to make this post simply as a way to add our voice to an issue that we feel is too large to be quiet on.
With that being said, I will respond to Fogleg.
I have seen these threads pop up several times now and they always bother me. I do not want to insult anyone if they try to explain their feelings but it basically boils down to this:
Most of these low population dead servers were not dead some time ago. People left, stopped playing or lost interest in WvW, and while some also like to jump between servers, many do not. I never have, and have no plans to transfer. And I know many players in my low population server who feel exactly same.
The problem is, the last tiers are not fun. It is not fun to be in the dead server and it is not fun to fight one either. WvW is about having enemies and when there is none, it stops being WvW. I understand that some people may like the emptiness and lack of enemies, and yet, I strongly feel that most players prefer actual fights, actual enemies instead of NPCs.
And while you are explaining here how much you enjoy being in dead server, try, even for a moment, to think about all those players who have quit the game because only reason to play – WvW is so stupidly boring they can’t be bothered anymore. I know many players trying this changed WvW right now after being away from the game, and many more just planning to return. Countless players have left the game because there is nothing to do in WvW, because scores do not matter, because winning or losing the match is same result.
As above, I would like to point out things that I agree with and any issues that I have:-
Agreement 1) You are correct many of the “dead” servers were not dead a while ago. We have seen the drops in some servers who were in the top 3-4 tiers in WvW season 1 and now pretty much, like we call it, “dead”.
Agreement 2) With that said, I agree with you and I also posted that my gf and I do not enjoy playing on your end of the spectrum…it simply does not offer enough player vs player competition. Which brings me to the next point.
Disagreement 3 Here is where we differ. I disagree with your point, especially where you say that we enjoy playing on a “dead” server.
As I’ve posted before, we don’t enjoy that side of the spectrum.
Ferguson’s Crossings, is simply not a “dead” server. We have an active WvW population, with a good community to back it up.
However, I do not dispute the fact that in my opinion, we have a “coverage” problem, rather than a “population” problem, however they are quite interlinked.
- If we were to get an increase in population, but an increase in time zones where most of us players are asleep, then it’s fine. The increase in population is focused on the faults that servers like us have.
- Currently, the server merge has just forced an increase in ACTIVE population, forcing 2 servers with 2 active WvW players to participate and fight for the same queues etc. Whilst it may also help coverage undoubtedly, a solution such as “high server paired with low server”, is in our opinion = too simple and too generalised.
In my humble opinion, I feel that even tiers 7-8 differ quite vastly from tiers 4-6.
Disagreement 4) I disagree with the fact that we’re simply being selfish, wanting everyone to suffer, and against ANY improvements.
a) Change and “Improvements”, yes I would love it if it was always beneficial to everyone. However using an analogy, it’s like this:-
Analogy 1 Currently, in the UK, the medical profession is having a strike. Both “improvements” offered by both the medical profession and the government are totally different. On one side, the medical profession claims the government has offered an unfair deal…on the government side, it is a “fair” deal which brings improvement.
With this quick analogy, I hope I already show that improvement depends simply on your judgement of the situation. As such, may I point that you have also pointed out that many similar threads have propped up. Surely this shows that the server merge HAS caused issues. I don’t think that you can speak for every person in the lower tiers or “dead” servers that this server merge is a good idea.
b)I myself can’t offer any solutions, yes. This is because, I don’t know what is realistic, what is possible, what can be done in the time allocated, what resource is allocated etc.
I can offer a ton of solutions but none which may actually be realistically implemented. Furthermore, there are thousands of players in this game, who will undoubtedly be more in tune with the game. I leave my faith to them to suggest things…and only hope that they listen.
Thanks to everyone else who posted.
Please encourage everyone in your server who dislikes the server merge to voice it on the forums
P.S is there a way to include a poll? I’ve seen it done before but not sure how haha.
*UPDATE:- Apparently there’s a WvW Poll. For FC players who I’ve contacted (and anyone else who wants to vote) please vote here:-

Hope this works*
I wanted to make a post about how my gf and I currently feel about WvW server link.
Whilst we almost never post on the forums, we feel like the server links has caused a huge amount of concern for us. Whilst we would like to speak for our server, we will not as we of course do not speak for any of them but ourselves. Saying that, I would like to encourage our server, Ferguson’s Crossing, to voice their concern on this thread if they feel the same way.
I personally have huge faith that Anet does read these sort of posts to gain some sort of feedback. Please be warned, this is a long post.
First a little bit about my gf and I:—
- One of the things we both look forward to on weekends, is to play GW2 together. AS most of you gaming nerds know, playing a game together with a loved one is like a dream come true. Anyway after a hard week at work, the weekend is often the only time we can both be as introverted as possible, interact with only each other and people whom we choose to interact with. So please bear this point in mind when I say that while we will invest and play this game at our most convenient opportunity, we are not players who can invest a lot of time on GW2 as much as some of you can.
With that being said, I would like to point out that both of us have played this game for over 2 years. We’ve had over 7,500 hours spent on this game together, the majority of which in WvW. Whilst the last 2 years there has been many changes, both good and bad…we have both chose to accept it. WvW is pretty much the “end-game” for my girlfriend and I. It offers “just the right amount” of PvP competition, without the added salty-ness from PvP. It’s not as mind-numbing as PvE and requires you to think on your feet sometimes. No disrespect to those who do enjoy those gameplays…it just doesn’t fit our enjoyment in the game. However, we feel very strongly about this change thus we have decided to make this topic.
The first point I would like to point out is the ’Culture of WvW"
In each tier, in each server, there are different cultures of WvW.
Using our opinion only, one extreme end of this spectrum is where we feel the top 3 tiers tend to be in. In these tiers, there is often what we call, a “zerg-fest”. Literally go to WvW and all you see is blobs of people. In these tiers there are often queues, particularly on reset night or on weekends, and to some people that’s okay.
We do not fit the above stereotype. In fact, it’s a huge possibility that many of us who’ve played WvW long, have moved from a similar type of culture as above.
In the other end of the extreme spectrum, the lower tiers, particularly between 7/8 tiers, the culture of WvW is more, to our mind, “relaxed”/“scattered”. That is, you could go into a borderland and find yourself and a few other friends/guildies being able to roam around and in extreme cases cap a BL on your own. For many players, they may enjoy the freedom of roaming freely but for my girlfriend and I, we like a bit more competition. Thus we do not fit this end.
Instead, we fit more between tiers 4-6 (though more on the relaxed side of the spectrum).
Before the server link, we enjoyed being able to have “just the right amount” of competition, with an atmosphere “just right” for a relaxed yet competitive gameplay.
Since the server merge, we feel that Ferguson’s Crossing has been forced into a culture that fits more of tiers 1-3. Even throughout the week, often there has been queues in EBG, and when we simply go into wvw, we lose our sense of commitment as after all, we’ve got 2 servers worth of active wvwers to take our place. Some of you may find the queues fine, but bear in mind my earliest point. Most of us only have the weekends to play. We do not want to spend our time queueing and to be quite honest, we should have the right to enter a BL when and where we wish, particularly if we moved to a server that had just the “right” culture of WvW.
Using a quick analogy, it’s like merging Anet with Blizzard and asking them to work together. With 2 communities, 2 different cultures of work merged together suddenly, it’s not going to fix whatever problem you, ANet are trying to fix. You’re not going to become best friends immediately, you’re going to have get used to the community on each side etc.
The second point I would like to point out is the ‘Population Problem’
All of us, WvWers, know that particularly in the lower tiers, there are huge population problems. Even then, in the middle tiers, we feel that we have more of a “coverage” problem, that is the problem that one server goes to “sleep” in their time zone, while the other guys “wake up”.
We feel that the WvW server link currently takes into account, mainly the population.
Suddenly putting 2 servers with similar coverage times, would simply cause the problem that we currently feel in Ferguson’s Crossing…Over-populated active players between so and so hours…to a point where it drops off to being normal.
So if the plan is for the WvW server link is to stay…please take into account when players get active and create a synergy of server merges that way, instead of putting the lowest populated server to the highest populated server and so on and so forth.
My final point, but not the least important, is the ‘Community’
Community is VERY important in WvW. The server we moved from, we had quite a negative view of many people there and decided to move.
Ferguson’s Crossing has a great community. I love how all the active wvw players support each other, play together, enjoy our jokes together and we feel like a close family, with a few unwanted cousins in between. For myself personally, I take the greatest pleasure in commanding my fellow Fergs and winning (and losing Q_Q)…
As an inside joke…I am new to WvW after all…
Why am I pointing this out?
What if an active player…or a guild of WvW players dislike the server. What if they decide to move to a different server (like our circumstances were). What if their dislike for each other means differences cannot be reconciled?
Some of us who were in that situation spent time, gems, tense emotions and feelings to find a home i.e. a server to feel comfortable in.
The danger of this server merge is currently putting two servers with active wvw players who hate each other…suddenly together again. Not only will this cause friction with just the two parties (be it individual or guilds etc.), each server will most likely look after their own and most likely cause friction with the rest.
Not to mention, there WILL be some players in each server who feel that the “inferior” server are not pulling their weight etc.
Anyway, we understand that it is likely that many of these have been said in different threads etc. We feel that our voices SHOULD be heard…regardless of many times it’s been repeated. We hope we will get many responses…and perhaps an ANet response will reassure us that even though our concerns may not change things, at least it’s been heard and seen.
Thanks for reading this essay…I mean Post!
