WvW and PvE lag, you can help

I know there are already topics for lag, but I’m hoping I’ve found at least part of the problem. I’ve been experiencing over 50% packet loss at times to some Anet servers and that means I can press my skill key over and over and Anet never receives the key press so nothing ever happens in game. And without a doubt there is skill lag in PvE, but most of the time it doesn’t seem to be as bad since there usually aren’t massive groups interacting.

Getting a solution is proving far more difficult than finding the problem. I posted something similar in the WvW lag discussion, but it ended up on page 6 so I doubt that many are reading that far into the topic. I don’t know where else to turn but to the community as neither GW support (other than telling me I’m experiencing packet loss) or my ISP (who verifies I’m experiencing the packet loss) say they can help.

How can you help? If you have lag, particularly in WvW, find out what Anet server are you connected to? In chat type /IP. My problems are with IPs in 64.25.38.1-254 range, if yours are as well copy that IP so you can check how your connection is routed. Checking the routing will have to be done via the command window on a Windows PC (sorry don’t know Mac), by typing cmd in search or in run. Once the cmd window is open type:

tracert 64.25.38.XX (where XX are the last numbers in the IP address such as 89, 227, 254, etc, i.e. 64.25.38.89).

Watch the lines and see if one lists an IP addresses in 4.69.145.1-254 range and usually contain names similar to ae-X-XX.edgeX.Dallas1.Level3.net (where X are numbers, i.e. ae-1-60.edge2.Dallas1.Level3.net). At times (over a hour of testing) I’ve been experiencing over 50% packet loss at that “hop” .

At this point I think that’s where the problem lies, but I can’t find anyone who can or will do anything about it. IF the community verifies that the majority who have WvW (or PvE) skill lag problems are indeed routed through Level3.net perhaps Anet will see this topic and have someone from their engineering team check and diagnose the same and then contact Level3.net and get the problem cleared up. At least one other person I’ve checked with (they live in Canada) is routed through the same hop. BTW I’m in the Pacific North West.

For me the problem seems to be related to packets loss routed through Level3.net. And the problem isn’t specific to WvW but gets exasperated in WvW due to the high amount of network traffic. I see packet loss on regular PvE servers as well.

In game (WvW) I typed /IP in chat and then I using ping plotter, continually plotted to the IP (GW servers don’t reply, but I can see the hops all the way to the destination).

Level3.net, their “edge” servers, would drop over 50% of packets heading out to the GW servers.

My ISP says they can’t do anything since traffic is going. Guildwars says they can’t either.

A whois on those IPs (right click on IP in ping plotter) shows Level 3 Communications. I sent them email yesterday.

I found lag to be a bit better late last night, but that might be because less traffic from US players and overseas player might not get routed through level 3.

If you can do as I did with ping plotter and see problems with packet loss at level 3 then I suggest you contact them.

Your traits are reset when you train with Master’s Training Manual. Skill 20 in acrobatics and 10 in critical strikes and none in deadly arts.
