Still having the issue … definitely an issue with admin vs non-admin.
And its not the installer .. its the actual game startup…

Obviously (to me at least) the non-admin run is not doing the “right” thing to get access to a function.
Another issue impacting performance is the fact that Apple has effectively de-emphasized X11 which things like Wine and Cider rely on. Now that XQuartz is an open source project I wonder how the X11 drivers for newer graphics chips will get their proprietary interface info?
I have two data points – first the game runs much better as an administrator — don’t know why, and second I get better frame rates on Windows XP under Parallels than as a native game.
This port smells of a “quick and dirty” – I can hear them now — “we are getting bad press and not competing with WoW since we have no Mac client – get me one – cheap”
I’ve had several issues with the beta (see previous posts). Most of those issues go away when I run the game using an administrator id.
I normally run using a userid that has no admin rights – a recommended way to run OS X. The only way I have been able to use the beta fully and at ‘normal’ FPS is as to install and run as an admin userid.
Anyone else installing and running as a non-admin user able to run ok?
I am happy for all of you that have 10.8.2 installed and working. All I know is the GW2 game is badly broken on my system. It ran fine before 10.8.2.
And no – I am not using FileVault or any A-V stuff. And yes the whole game is blessed in the security pref. I got the Windows version running under Wineskin by updating XQuartz to 2.7.4 RC1.
What version of XQuartz are you running? Do you run the app level firewall on or off?
Well if you got it working don’t upgrade to 10.8.2 (latest Mountain Lion update). It breaks lots of things including any Wine apps, GW2 (which uses technology like Wine).
Sure wish GW2 was native OpenGL app – otherwise this is going to happen a LOT.
The initial download seems ok but after that the game hangs. Same under Wine using Wineskin.
The latest upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) is causing me so issues which all seem to revolve around the ‘sandboxing’ Apple is implementing.
1. The installer will not verify if it is dragged off the .dmg and will not run properly if it is left on the .dmg
2. The game will not install or download patches nor will it run – a similar issue has been reported by the Wine folks (q.v.).
I didn’t really mean “clueless” – hit enter too soon … what I meant to say was maybe some people can’t upgrade because of 10.6.8 being needed for other stuff. You can always dual boot — you might have to repartition your disk if it is a “MBR” style partition.
Should we use XQuartz (I have 2.7.3 installed) or whatever is in the Cider build used for the official distribution? Any performance numbers for either?
You guys are really clueless – 10.6.8 was the last release of OS X that included Rosetta. Rosetta allows you to run older PowerPC software on an Intel system. 10.6.8 also was optimized for 32 bit and actually ran well on PPC and Intel. If you have older versions of Office, Photoshop, etc you are locked to 10.6.8
