if you think about it they’ve actually added 2 new tiers of gear with one update: Ascended and Legendary

just 3 months into the game! and i thought SWTOR was introducing power creep far too early in that game!!

Yes, I have. I know, they are adding more ascended gear, but that isnt treadmill. It is lower class than legendary, according to arenanet, who MADE the game. That means that we dont have something higher to work to, its just something in between. She didnt say that they are adding more tiers, she said they are adding more ascended.

your post indicates that you are ignorant of where “legendary” and “exotic” items currently stand in relative power terms. they are exactly the same on the power curve-meaning they are statistically identical. ANet is bumping up (aka inflating) the “legendary” stats in order to make room for an intermediary tier of gear (called “Ascended”) between “exotics” and “legendary”. that is THE definition of power creep-a condition causal to gear grinding (aka “gear treadmill”).

if they’re saying that you need this new gear type in order to run the new dungeon then they’ve created their own tautological problem.

it isn’t necessary. all they have to do is create some mechanism within the dungeon that enables players to figure out how to temporarily deal with the new condition mechanic. i find this route more clever and more fun than grinding resistance gear.

there are two possible explanations as to why they would want to artificially introduce power creep into their game:

1) they feel the game is failing to retain/grow customers and that it is due to a lack of perceived character progression that can only be achieved via vertical progression schemes

2) they feel they need a new revenue-generating source because they can’t remain profitable with the current direction of the game. this means that we can expect some tie-in to the cash shop in order to acquire this gear in the future and brings up the ugly specter of “buy2win”.

whatever the reason, i wish they’d be more transparent for the reasoning behind this fundamental shift in game development philosophy.

“Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two.”

sorry Chris but this is a total reversal from your stated philosophy on this game’s design. “exotic” and “legendary” gear are supposed to have the same stats. there is no power creep currently between them. what you intend to do is bump up the legendary stats to artificially create power creep in the game for the sake of “vertical progression” (something this game wasn’t supposed to be about).

i like the idea of the new dungeon and i don’t mind new mechanics, such as “agony”, however i don’t like the route they’re taking with “resistance gear”. i’d rather the mechanic be countered by player skill/cleverness. this is nothing more than a gear treadmill to satisfy the crowd that demands such things and totally compromises ANet’s integrity on its core values concerning GW2’s game development.

to the devs, this is a serious misstep! please PLEASE reconsider this. please find other ways to satisfy player need for character progression. it doesn’t have to be vertical. add new weapons, styles, utilities, elites that can be unlocked via questing in pve and pvp environments.
