I had this happen to me on WvW as well. We where taking a tower and then I get the “siren” sound and no other audio from GW2. I was on Skype and heard everyone just fine. So, Large group of people, all firing their abilities, and I end up with the “siren.”
IMO it seems like what’s happening is that the sound engine is getting overloaded and then just quits. I have noticed that if you’re in a large crowd, like attacking a tower commander, some of the sound effects that are normally produced get dropped and you simply don’t hear them. So despite the fact that I have the sound effects set to high it still doesn’t produce all of the SF channels. I’d almost like a setting to control this, because it gets annoying. There is probably a reason for this, but if it involves system resources it’s a bit pointless, on my system at least.
Considering this, I’m wondering if the sound engine simply doesn’t get enough system resources and too much activity just crashes it or it shifts into a debug mode and it produces that “siren” noise.
For the record GW2 is using FMOD with a custom system built on top of it. As an audiophile, the audio is excellent as long as your not with hoards of players.
