This is a huge indication of the mindset that Anet currently has towards its playerbase, the fact that this change even happened at all is a big red flag. There was nothing wrong with the previous system, and it was one that had respect towards the players- a simple thing that said “we don’t view you as a means to take advantage of to gain revenue.” That’s changed.
The only reason tiered currency systems like the one they implemented exist is to rip people off. This change, along with some of the more recent changes and admittance that things like dungeons are not something they care about, means I won’t be playing much anymore, and that means me not spending any more money in their gem store either- gold or actual cash.
When discussing this topic, it’s important to understand the difference between quantity of skins and quality of skins. I’m seeing some posts here saying “Well, there’s a lot of diversity, why are you complaining?”
Personally, I’m not denying that there is a lot of diversity in terms of armor and weapon skins. I do agree, however, that the quality of skins are lacking. There are very few sets of skins that makes me think to myself “I need that. That’s amazing.” Ever since release, I’ve been disappointed with the armor and weapon skins in terms of quality. Another poster qualified them as “vanity skins” or “elite skins.” I think that’s appropriate. GW2 lacks those, and I would love to see more effort put into coming out with aesthetically pleasing armor and weapon skins, rather than just a focus on having a large quantity of skins.
A change that would really be beneficial in terms of finding aesthetically pleasing and matching armor and weapon skins would be the implementation of the ability to dye weapons. This would be very beneficial for players like me who have to give up on an armor set/look due to weapon color being stagnant.
I do like the concept behind this idea, and it would be interesting to see how it could be implemented. However, I don’t like the “Legendary” tier association. I am hoping that someday we get class specific Legendary armor options, and personally I would love to see actual, unique Legendary runes/sigils that offer better stat increases and/or an additional bonus effect for a set.
I could definitely see myself being okay with this if it was perhaps an Ascended tier of runes/sigils, focusing more on Ascended crafting mats and retaining a significant amount of money/time sink qualities. Implementing your idea as an Ascended tier would actually be beneficial, as it would make my desire for Legendary tier runes/sigils more feasible.
Just wanted to give a suggestion for dealing with the problem of excess ascended gear. I know many people (like me) have been holding on to ascended gear (especially rings) from doing Fractals content. Personally, and from hearing others’ sentiment regarding the topic, it feels like there is no outlet for getting rid of ascended gear like we have with other tiers (salvaging, tp, mystic forge, etc).
I believe reformatting some of the ways of obtaining Fractal rewards would be very beneficial to the community, and help solve this issue.
Main benefits: Outlet for excess gear and new ways to obtain some Fractal rewards.
Concept: The basic idea would be a new Fractal merchant. This merchant would offer a new currency for traded gear, so when we sell this merchant one piece of ascended gear (rings, armor, and weapons could be priced differently based on ease of obtaining), we would receive a certain value of the new currency.
We could use this new currency, in conjunction with Fractal relics and Pristine Fractal relics, to purchase other Fractal rewards (my thoughts would be ascended armor/weapons and Fractal weapon skins).
Example: A Fractal weapon skin would cost something along the lines of 10 new currency, 1000 Fractal relics, and 15 pristine Fractal relics. An armor piece might be 15 new currency, 1500 Fractal relics, and 20 Pristine Fractal relics. Obviously these figures are just examples, and they could be adjusted based on what would be deemed most fair.
As I stated previously, this would give us a good outlet for dealing with excess ascended gear, and give us new ways to obtain the items we do want (while keeping them within the same structure type of obtaining them).
If you have suggestions or criticisms or general thoughts regarding a model like this, please feel free to share them!
Edit: Other prospective benefits: Other benefits I could foresee from this type of model would be increase in players participating in Fractals, gives players who are sitting on an increasing amount of Pristine Fractal relics another viable and appealing avenue to spend their relics in, and could also be implemented to accept duplicate/excess Fractal weapon skins (if you already have one type of Fractal weapon skin, you could turn it in to the same merchant for the new currency, or exchange it for a different Fractal weapon skin in addition to a few Fractal relics or Pristine Fractal relics).

I was in the same position you were in. I played for about two to three months when the game first launched and eventually left. I resumed playing about three months ago and it’s been fantastic. First day I was back I PUG’d CoF P1 and we managed just fine. I also saw a warrior wrecking mobs in there and felt far inferior in my Soldier’s armor running sword + shield and a shout healing/condition removal build, so I messaged him asking for tips and builds and explained I was a returning player. In short, I got a guild invite and now run with regular dungeons easy and have great gear. The game has been immensely fun and I’m really happy I returned.
I would just recommend finding a guild once you get back. There are a lot out there that are recruiting, and many players will be helpful if you ask questions. Best part- it’s free to redownload and give another shot.
This type of issue can be difficult to diagnose, as there could be multiple factors causing this and isolating it can be time consuming.
It’s very possible it’s server-side with the other issues that have been present. Does it happen in just the new zone? If it’s everywhere, then it’s really just about going down a list of troubleshooting options to rule out everything that you can.
You could start by trying to repair the GW2 file (https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28148006-Repairing-the-Game-Client)
Or you could try re-downloading the game when you can (maybe overnight so you can still play during the day).
Updating drivers may be a solution as well, in line with doing other general maintaince to your computer.
Don’t be surprised if the issue persists, however. It very well could be server-side, but it wouldn’t hurt to try those things just in case.
