But where did the cleave go?
Well the guardian mace does have other functionality in that it AoE heals around you. So technically it does cleave, it’s just the healing that cleaves. You can also take a mace trait for increased healing power, so using a mace can actually be a good option for a supportive melee style… might not be as useful in that role for PvP though, maybe as a node defender.
It would definitely make it a bit better for actual fighting if it did cleave though.
As for tool kit, the thwack does hit really hard. I find it’s also reasonable to make this attack somewhat weaker than a typical mace since it’s part of a utility set rather than a weapon choice. Though again, it would definitely be a nice buff without making it suddenly overpowered.
I have used the tool kit auto attack in a variety of scenarios. It’s good when you need higher direct damage on a condi build, or if someone throws up a projectile reflect wall/swirling winds. It’s sometimes also good for attacking structures depending on what else you have equipped.
Thwack does also technically have other functionality in that it heals turrets, but… yeah, that might as well just mean it doesn’t have any other functionality whatsoever.
Yeah, Thwack is weird. It really ought to cleave, a similar problem with the Mesmer Sword chain was fixed in the path (although, the animation clearly shows me stabbing, so having it cleave is somewhat weird…).
The Guardian one OTOH does already “cleave”, as Yamsandjams said. It’s not about the damage, and it’s main component is actually PBAE.
Guard mace cleave is a small forgettable heal on a 1 sec long cast. I don’t see the value in the trade off.
Then don’t use the mace, or campaign for a buff to the heal. :P
