Good Fights [GF] Mesmer
(edited by Fox.3562)
Problem: The path-finding on the clone from Illusionary Leap (Mesmer sword 3) cannot find a path up or down certain slopes, causing the clone to first stall, then slowly walk towards its target.
Why it’s important: This is mostly a PvP/WvW issue where Mesmers rely on Illusionary Leap to set up other attacks such as Blurred Frenzy (sword 2) or a shatter combo. It effectively makes Mesmers unable to fight on slopes since not having the gap-closer from Illusionary Leap means you are unable to catch a target who is running away up a staircase/hill since Mesmers have low access to swiftness. This is a BIG issue for power/shatter Mesmers.
Possible Solutions:
I can’t stress enough how big of a quality of life change it would be if I didn’t have to worry if my skills will actually work when I’m trying to kill someone.

All of the solutions sound good and fixing such a key skill for mesmers would be much needed!

Oh man the idea is brilliant and it would not change the skill philosophy at all. Many will say that it would be OP but that’s how the skill should work in the 1st place anyway.
/signed.
Just make the clone leap work like Flashing Blade or Inf. Strike.
I quite dislike nr 1 because it would remove the (at least for me) popular iLeap -> Diversion combo and, as you already stated, cause me to have 1 less clone for shattering. This would also leave Sword/X combos without a clone skill which goes against how it is for every other weapon combo. Since iLeap won’t be a clone skill after this change, it also won’t be affected by iCelerity which will further nerf the skill by increasing its cd for many builds.
I’m ok with nr 2 und 3, though.
I like #2. It will not give the clone you will spawn a Leap finisher, but you would still get it when you swap. I would actually even remove the Leap finisher entirely.
However, I believe that it would suffer of OP issues: if I’m fighting a mesmer and I see a clone suddenly leaping towards me, I know a shatter or BF combo is in the air. Having the clone spawning right near me would make it harder to see.
Personally, I’d appreciate #2 if they put a CD of 1,5s to the swap skill (like they did to Temporal Curtain), so that people could still react to it.
Bump yeah this bug should have been fixed by now. Also i consider variant 2 to be the best one since it leaves the skill functioning and it’s general usage intact.
i think ileap needs to be nerfed like infiltrator’s strike was.
i don’t see how making inf. strike useless and then letting mesmers do the exact same kitten is fair at all.
I also want to mention, there the ‘Swap’ from ‘Illusionary Leap’ can also put you underground the map. (Same is true for ‘Phase Retreat’ and ‘Blink’ and similar spells from other professions).
If you need more information on the possible spots in the spvp maps, I can provide some of those.
This is indeed something that should have been fixed/changed a long time ago.

Well, that’s because iLeap:
- has a cd
- needs a target in 600 range to make the chain skill available
- has a much shorter time window to use the stun break
/edit @below: Yeah, somehow forgot about that.

While we’re at it. Can we fix the bug where it does the animation, nothing happens and just goes strait to cool down when switching to the weapon.
I think this also happens on iZerker

That happens when you’re out of range. The skill will still attempt to activate instead of doing nothing and saying “out of range”. I don’t mind that as much because you just have to make sure you’re in range before you use it.

It will do that when out of range, But it will do that when in range too sometimes. I’ve had it happen right next to my foe just after swapping to the weapon.
this really needs to happen.
in SPvP if i have to catch someone i just cant rely on my sword 3 most of the time i blink next to my target and double tab 3 just to be sure the immobilize gets off…
Really frustrating.
Good point, good solutions.
+1 !
I don’t want to make it sound like my solutions are the only options either. I’m open to anything that makes the skill work 100% of the time.
For #2, have the clone do the leap that the stormbringers in pve in Ascalon areas do. That way, there still is a chance to at least dodge the cripple/ immobilize, otherwise, if it was just an instant cripple skill at 600 range, it would need a nerf in either CD or range which would just suck and make the change kinda invalid.

According to Supcutie’s guide, this is not an out of range issue. It is a bug.
Here is the video he made to show the issue.
As for Illusionary Leap, I would love to see a fix. I like the ideas listed here, especially #2.

Can’t argue with that. I’ve had iLeap/Berserker not work so many times, I guess I’ve just gotten used to the fact that so many Mesmser skills don’t work all the time.
Bump for viability.
Potato, a while back an anet dev said this was due to a functional limitation of their system and they would/could not fix it.

That’s why I suggested 2 options before saying just fix the pathfinding. Having a skill just not work should not be an option. They said they were looking into fixing it in March, it’s time to change the skill if the game engine can’t support it in it’s current form.

Fixing it sounds like too much work knowing Anet…
I would guess 1 would be avoided as then sword MH has no way of generating clones. I can see people complaining about 2 as it lacks the animation that gives iLeap away and makes it far more difficult to dodge/avoid the Mirror Images → Mindwrack burst.
Maybe having a clone materialize at your opponent like your suggestion but it takes 1s to before you can use leap or before it fully materializes to offset the burst.

I’ve gotten to the point where I’m intentionally delaying myself so I can get the skills of ><! It forces me to use better positioning but occasionally it’ll put me into a bad spot.
There are plenty of alternate fixes if A-net has trouble messing with the pathing but I think they are trying to not give mesmers free roam where we can blink to enamies on ledges that we can’t normally blink to if they are to lenient with how the skill functions… But frankly I wouldn’t mind a tad bit more mobility, I know we already got great combat mobility but if we’re gonna have crappy options for swiftness and no ooc movement buff might as well go all in on our combat mobility.

I don’t think being able to blink up to enemies on ledges is a concern. Guardians/thieves can already do that with Flashing Blade/Infiltrators Strike respectively, and Mesmers can if you use Blink first.
More thoughts plox. Tried playing shatter today and iLeap made me sad.

I can not tell you how extremely frustrating the brokenness of this skill is. 2,2,3,F1 is bread and butter for this class and because of a bug it doesn’t work at least half the time.
please fix.
This is one the bread-and-butter skills for a Mesmer and has been broken since day one. Fixing this seriously would make me a happy bunny.
To do decent burst damage, a Mesmer needs to line up his damage, then immobilise his target and subsequently burst. When the immobilise doesn’t materialise because iLeap once again bugs out, a whole rotation has gone down the drain.
Trying to use iLeap on Spirit Watch makes me sad.
