I find it a bit hard to understand comparing to some other classes’ roles such as Warrior, Guardian, Thiefs, Mesmers etc. I get it Warrior is the the kind of Frontline fighters, Guadians as boons machine, protecting teamates, healing and all. Mesmers… i guess they should be the “juking your enemy” type of classes right? The thiefs should be the stealth fighter and can usually take the apprehend and take half your health away if u dont have blocks. Rangers is clear enough as… well u know, rangers like robinhood and stuff ( well i dont get it why are their melee sometimes are more preferable than their range skills). Elementalists should be the type of burst AOE damage dealer. And engineers …. well I dont know too much about it, my engineer is not yet finished so I’ll skip it.

But For god’s sake what is Necro’s role? should they be the dark magic caster that casts spells from distance? Or some kind of sticky piece of I-Don’t-Know-What that can keep enemies in their favorable distance for damages? I’m maining a necro so it bothers me to figure out his position.
And btw that Staff skills on necro sure shows how creative Anet is being when they are creating this class It’s more like after they giave necro the other weapons, a discussion occurs:
“hey I think necros needs a staff since they are mages.”
“but we don’t have enough time, beta starts next week !!!”
“Its alright, lets design a 1200 range auto for the staff so it makes them mages.”
“what about the other skills?”

10 minutes later************
" we are running out of time, just go and give him some circles with different effects and then we start on the promotion video."
“what about the casting motion?”
“how complicate do u want them to be !!?? just give them some greeny circles and the players will be fine with it !!! it has 4 more close range weapoins !!!”

Pre-launch Anet said that Necro is intended to excel at control.
So basically Crippling, Immobilizing, Chilling… pushing and pulling enemies around.

In reality it’s a worthless role in most of PvE.
In PvE people want Professions that are fast, deal a lot of damage and don’t die easily.
Necro meets the “don’t die easily”-part, but botches the speed and damage parts.
This also shows you why Warriors are so popular in PvE. :P

Necro is really good at AoE condition damage, so if you are interested in doing organized Wurm boss runs they’d love to have you fighting Husks.
Also Necro’s ability to Cripple and Poison do come in handy occasionally, but those situations are few and far between.

Controlling is more useful in sPvP and WvW.
sPvP is all about capture points, so spamming condis, keeping people Crippled, Poisoned, Blinded, Fear’d etc. is effective. (and super annoying!)

In WvW Spectral Grasp is actually really handy at times, Spectral Wall can be surprisingly effective and Plague (spam Blind) is good as well.

I think that the biggest issue Necro has is that Control as a role is not very important.
So he has a role nobody really needs badly.
And Guardian is handy enough at Control (Line of Warding) on top of being a crazy good Boon machine.

Also sucks that he’s slow by design, while being slow in PvE just means you take longer to walk everywhere.
Annoying.

When you design a game based around movement and then design a Profession around lacking movement it just makes things very awkward.

The Necro is supposed to be the master of attrition and king of conditions.

Unfortunately the way the game is designed means that siphons and conditions (the Cap!) and Control are horrifically bad in PvE.

Which forces Necros to leave half their skills and talents alone – and make the best of what else they have to be some kind of muddled melee/mid-range caster.

It’s pretty weird that the Necro PvE meta is dropping wells and autoattacking with a dagger.

When I get that feeling I want… spectral healing.

LOL. I love the impersonation of Anet at the end. It actually goes with what I was thinking when I tried rolling a necro when I first got the game. I was so dissapointed that all the attacks were just circle symbols while everything else in the game got some kind of effect (although they do give an effect when they actually hit a target, just nothing big). But the fact that the staff turns into a scythe when you attack is pretty kitten cool ;P
