I think just making more existent weapons available would be a good easy initial pass. My take would be:

  • Elementalist: Warhorn
  • Engineer: MH Mace
  • Mesmer: MH Pistol
  • Necromancer: Torch
  • Guardian: OH Dagger (used as a casting focus only)
  • Ranger: Rifle
  • Thief: Rifle as a 1200 range option
  • Warrior: Making it difficult. OH Dagger used as a throwing dagger, IMO.

I think it’s much more likely that Anet allows classes to use more pre-existing weapons before they introduce a couple brand new ones, but honestly they should do both.

This is a list of the existing weapons I think professions should already be able to use, plus new weapons

Elementalist: Axe (MH/OH), Torch
Engineer: Mace, Crossbow (new)
Guardian: Warhorn, Battleaxe (new), Javelin (new)
Mesmer: Warhorn, Javelin (new)
Necromancer: Axe (OH), Torch
Ranger: Rifle, Javelin (new), Crossbow (new)
Thief: Axe (MH/OH), Crossbow (new)
Warrior: Battleaxe (new), Javelin (new)

And, just for fun, here’s some weapons that I think SHOULD NOT be available on certain classes because I don’t think they fit with the image of the class:

Mesmer: Pistol
Ranger: Greatsword
Warrior: Rifle

We haven’t even gotten to the point where each weapon for each class is viable. Let alone traits, or even classes overall! Without a balanced product we’ll see some classes getting new weapons to expand their gameplay while others get weapons merely to fill in holes out of laziness.

The only way new weapons would be justified at this point were if they dramatically changed the way classes played.

Ranger getting a staff to turn it more into a Druid. A Thief getting a Scepter to turn it into a Dark Magic user. Elementalist getting a greatsword to make it a melee enchanter. Things like this.

We don’t need ‘just another weapon’ for classes that overlap with current ones or are introduced for no other reason than because ANet couldn’t be bothered to make existing weapons work.

A claw weapon would be good. Give it to warrior, thief, ranger and Elementalist.
Perhaps a tome offhand weapon too. Give it to guardian, necromancer, mesmer.
Chain whip would be neat. Give it to engineer, warrior and guardian.

Porting existing weapons should be a given. My ele wants a longbow. War horn and torch needed to be fixed and spread out more.

I like some of these, Thief rifle = sniper! I like it. 3 I’d change.

Mesmer: Mainhand Focus, mainly because I want dual beer mugs on my norn mesmer but, I also see it more fitting than the idea of a mesmer sitting there shooting someone, I rather they be channeling bolts of magic from a focus I imagine it being similar to scepter but more about power damage and maybe like a 1 hit shield bubble (like guard focus) + a clone, both would become reflects though when traited.

Guard: Offhand Mace, I don’t like the idea of dagger or really something just like a focus type thing, I want a secondary melee

Ranger: I want a mainhand melee weapon that isn’t as clumsy as sword, so… Dagger.

It should be done sometime though. Every other MMO brings new skills to the table every now and then, and it’s not like they don’t face the same problem.

To be fair, every other MMO doesn’t have a competitive PvP scene. That doesn’t mean I don’t want my MH cross bow for my engineer I have been posting about wanting since beta weekend one. I was simply stating what I feel some may over look, and that it is not as easy as it may at first appear.

I have to agree with this. Giving the Ranger Pistols, Rifles, Crossbows, Javelins, etc. is going to be pointless unless the weapons can actually be different enough from longbow/shortbow/axe to be worth making (otherwise, we get unjustified nerfs again that try to make weapons more different from each other)

(also, giving Thief greatsword and turning them into something similar to the Dark Knight from other RPGs would be awesome! I would gladly take that over getting a “dark” heavy armor class that was made for the sake of having an opposite to Guardian.)

i’d really like to see a druid style ranger using a staff with support/cc skills

example skills:
“Vine Wall” creates a wall of vines that enemies cannot pass through until it is destroyed

“Grasping Vines” creates a sproutling on the ground, when an enemy stands on it they are rooted for X amount of seconds or until the sproutling is destroyed. (kind of like a hybrid between a trap and the ranger root elite)

“Tree of Life” creates a tree of life which will passively grant healing, regen or condi removal (or all? XD) to allies within its area until it is destroyed.

“Withering Tree” creates a withering tree which will passively apply weakness and poison to enemies in range until it is destroyed.

Guardian – longbow (2h offensive spell casting – similar to Necro marks)
Warrior – Main hand shield (phalanx, epic support)
Necromancer- 2h melee, hammer or GS would be cool. Something to cleave
Engi – Hammer or Mace

Seeing as they’re never going to properly balance the rest of them, they might as well just add new skills honestly. I’d rather have new content and things to freshen up the game than nothing at all.

My list?
Elementalist: Mainhand/offhand sword (The class lacks full melee DPS)
Engineer: Hammer/Hammer Kit (Because flavor)
Guardian: Mainhand/Offhand Axe (Nothing else really fits)
Mesmer: Mainhand/offhand Dagger (The class lacks close-quarters melee DPS aside from sword)
Necromancer: Mainhand Sword/Offhand Axe (To fulfill melee blood magic)
Ranger: Staff (The class needs a support/Warden weapon after it was designed)
Thief: Longbow (It needs a 1200-range ranged weapon/attack option, rifles are clumsy and the class has limited out-of-stealth/non-blindspam options. Allows for non-pet archers to have a class they want to play)
Warrior: Torch if anything? They really have so many options already but hammer is overly-dominant.

That being said, I am in full support of Thief + Engineer crossbow.

I’d really like to see an axe for guardians. They really need a condi option, and all current weapons have specific roles they already fill. I wouldn’t want any of them to be converted.

Engineer could use melee pressure with a mace. It would be nice to utilize shield in a power build, and not be required to use tool kit for any type of melee.

However, I don’t think weapons should be added for the sake of adding them. The new weapons should be introduced to fill a roll the class doesn’t have access to, and fixing old weapons should take priority if possible. Like the warrior doesn’t need a new ranged weapon, just make the rifle viable.

Mainhand dagger would make more sense, as it would be less awkward than the sword, but still more offensive oriented than the greatsword (although I have to admit that having the dagger as simply an off-hand option makes more sense in terms of the class’ theme). As for ranged weapons, a heavily support focused staff could work.

I’m assuming you mean sPvP-balance?
Because so little attention has been given to PvE or WvW balance that really don’t feel improved at all.

And really, if a tiny loss of current balance, especially in a minority game mode, is all it takes to implement actual new stuff, then please, yes, take all balance away right now and given me 10 new weapons and 25 new utility skills.
Because honestly, well, balance is overrated. It’s worth nothing if the skills have to be so bland and boring for it.

If we look at the biggest competitive MOBA on the planet, LoL, they still introduce new heroes. For us, that’s pretty much a new weapon because we have fixed weapon skills.

Even if sPvP balance is a valid reason, you can’t just let character progression on all game modes fall stagnant due to one game mode which isn’t even that popular, judging by how most of media attention on GW2 is more focused towards PvE, most of the updated are for PvE, and the low view counts for PvP even in the tourney finals.

The standard range of the basic rifle attacks are 1,035 – 1,265, so it would be some kind of a ranged weapon.

MH dagger and off-hand sword are already mentioned. I think both of these makes much more sense. A staff would be interesting aswell. And of course, as I mentioned earlier, a hammer! Bunny Thumper!
