not really. BLC do also have a small chance to grant you an endless marketplace access, i believe. Now if the rich guy opens 250 chests and does still not get a level up, absolutely not my problem.

You can already buy everything you need to craft a character to 80 with real money. I doubt a random item is going to make any difference.

You level so fast in this game an additional level is not that big a deal. If you want fast leveling do the events in the starter areas. The champs in Queensdale start one after another and the events in the noob1-5 level Norn area are back to back. I finished off my level 78 thief fast with starter area events. Or craft, you get levels fast there also.

^ This, crafting with the ingredients you have with your other chars is a couple of levels instead of one. And the chance you get a tome is not very high.

If not pay to win. It’s another garbage item to most players who want to earn all their levels.

More “junk” a good chunk of us wouldn’t even want, so the chances at getting what we actually want is lowered and lowered over time, as they add stuff like this. Oh well, it’s not like I want to spend real money on random chances in the first place. I’ll give you money, ArenaNet, on stuff where I know I get what I pay for.

No. It is not pay to win, since it won’t give you any advantages against other lvl 80 characters.
Imo it seems like a fine addition to the BLC, but if the chance of getting one is too rare (low) I dont think anyone would bother leveling that way.

No, but if you manage to collect a few of those buggers over the months, and then start a new alt, it might give you a nice little headstart.

If you’re level 80 you get a skill point for using it. Basically it’s a nice little rare tidbit for an alt or maybe one of those oh so hard to get skill points we all have hundreds of.

Actually… It depends on the implementation.

1. Is the Tome of Knowledge usable in combat?
2. Does the level gained perform the same actions as when you level up through normal means?

If so, then yes it does sound very close to “Pay to Win”.

I think an on-demand full heal, full adrenaline, launch + damage to nearby enemies item that I can gain through dumping $ into the gem store fits the base description of pay 2 win, except for one thing. It still comes down to player skill. An unskilled player will still be unskilled even with this advantage, and may still lose to a skilled player. However, it does its part to level the playing field if not outright tip it in his favor. Now two skilled opponents (one with this item and the other without) or a skilled opponent using it against an unskilled…

I wouldn’t call this outright “Pay to Win”, but it certainly smells of “unfair advantage.”

That being said, I would imagine/hope ArenaNet has thought this through and has taken steps to mitigate said advantage.

If you re-read the post you may notice I come to the conclusion that this is not “Pay to Win” but simply smells like an “unfair advantage” at best if not properly implemented. And, as I said before, I’m sure ArenaNet has thoroughly thought this through and implemented this properly; therefore there would be no advantage at all.

According to the wiki the knockback is still in place. If not then that’s only one portion of the level-up benefits. The other benefits would still a valid complaint, again, if this is not implemented properly.

Furthermore, your assertion that this would cost $100 or 300 gold is faulty. I made no argument that this was a cost effective approach. The fact remains that whether this is $1 or $1,000, if not implemented properly, the advantage would be available to any who sought it. Also, RNG being RNG, it would not necessarily cost the $100 or 300 gold as someone could get it just as easily from one chest as someone else could get it from 100 chests.

All that being said, I fear this explanation is wasted as your very mature response leads me to believe you either don’t care, or simply lack the basic reading comprehension skills necessary, to understand anything beyond the simplest of sentences.

No. Go trade in-game gold for gems and get the same thing without ever spending a penny.

But considering how easy it is to zoom through leveling with crafting, I don’t think it matters much.

Tomes Of Knowledge were items in Warcraft III which granted your hero an instant level, weren’t they?
