I, too would like to know if the Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic has been upgraded to a better kit than basic. It also seems that the rarity went from white to yellow with the last patch.
Please could some Dev confirm if intended or a just a bug before the sale!

Yeah description still says basic afaik, just the rarity has been changed from white to yellow… which I think changed the behavior from basic kit (white) to Master (yellow kit)… Sigh the more I repeat it the more I think its unintended.

Never had the rarer material chance come close so I have no idea what they really mean by that, as in how the devs define it differently than what we think by it’s description what it should mean.
To say truth i dislike that. I bought that only so it wont flood my inventory with useless runes and sigils after salvaging in multi dungeon run/fractals. I would like it, if tp didnt crash every while and posting single rune took about half a minute.
I’ve burnt through all my Mystic Forge stones and have been considering getting the CF SOM, and the increase to Master Kit and the sale have made it really tempting. I’m just very hesitant to buy it if it’s going to revert to Basic.

Pretty much this. Here’s the reality for those of you ‘considering’ buying this;
1. If you buy it now, you get the discounted price. You have the item, and can keep it regardless of whether it turns back to basic.
2. If it turns back to basic, you can get a refund from ANet due to the product changing after you purchase it.
3. #2 is actually the reason that even if it was a fluke, ANet will be tempted to keep it. They’ll find that the sales on this item have sky-rocketed, and players get an item they genuinely want.
Basically, Win/Win/Possibly-Win. I for one already had the item, and it is a huge productivity gain when it comes to making less runs to town. It’s cheap to use too.
Would really love some official info on this as well before the sale ends. Personally I don’t think it’s worth it the way it was before this patch, but if the changes are permanent that would certainly make it worth buying

Personally, I use around 1 mystic kit per month for rares and 2, maybe 3 basic kits a day, where maybe 50% of those uses are on greens.
If they come out and say it’s intended, especially at 3c per use for rares, I’d buy one. Otherwise, it’s as bad as the unlimited gathering tools and the alternate “unlimited” options are far better.

IMO at the basic level it is far worse then the gathering tools. You only save .52c per salvage, and unlike gathering tools, it does not provide any unique animation.
Its not about savings, it never was about savings, its about convenience… an unlimited supply of the most common salvaging kit is worth it on its own merit. People calculating what it would cost vs buying that amount of salvage kits are completely missing the point.

The point is, if the description says “basic”, then it’s a basic kit that is bugged (or intentionally changed) to work at a higher rarity level. You are buying the item based on the description in game. If you buy it based on the description in game and it is reverted back to it’s basic form, you weren’t duped/tricked by anet in any way.
The only reason most people would even know it other than buying it and trying it is from this forum post.

No, they wouldn’t be entitled to a refund. Since the item they buy is the item advertised in the gem-store.
It is fully possible that ArenaNet will give refunds however, but they are in no way or form required to do so.

Thanks for the research, Natsu. 50 is still a small sample size, so I’m willing to presume that the update made the Matic have the same functionality as Master/Mystic Salvage Kits. No idea if this was intended (my guess is not), but in the meantime, if you were using Master/Mystic Salvage Kits to salvage Rares, feel free to use the Matic in the meantime!

But what people report is not the same as what the item is advertised to be.
It is advertised to be a Unlimited Basic Salvage Kit.
If anyone buy it just because people are saying it is better than that now, and they fix the bug making it working incorrectly, people only have themselves to blame.

If it is a bug and they fix it, players who bought it because they heard it was acting as a master kit will be SOL because the documentation still lists the basic rates. So buyer beware.
it’s not quite as good as master. I did a little test.
it gives less ectos than master (I got 0.53 ectos per rare, compared to 0.9 for master)
returning socket is about 72% chance, which is almost as good as master (80%)
chance of upgraded material seems to be about the same as master, though my sample size was too small to get a good number here.
Another test I did: salvaging an ecto with CFSoM gave 1.85 dust per ecto, which is the same as MSK’s 1.8-1.9. So salvaging dust from ectos is currently the same as MSK! It doesn’t make this process profitable, but it does make it a little less costly (5.5c per luck instead of 6c)
It’s honestly mind-blowing that this hasn’t gotten a response yet. This is a product people are spending real-life money on. The fact it wasn’t even noted in a patch is bad enough; the lack of a response afterward is terrible.

The fact that it is most likely a bug would explain why it is not noted in the patch-notes.
I would love to see the CFSOM get an upgrade… at last check, the gold→gem conversions meant you would need to use something like 8.2 million salvages to break even (even at rare it was somewhere in the 750k range)
The kit’s original description in the bltp was that of a crude kit. The original item description was of a basic kit. It behaved as a basic kit. Just saying, descriptions aren’t always right, though in the original instance, ONE of the text descriptors was correct. Though in this instance, the item was changed to rare quality, with its functionality also changing. The rareness of the item could count as a descriptor. A visual change (white to yellow) WAS made. So unless the rareness of the item is linked and not independent of the code of its functionality, two changes were made to the item. One for the color coded rareness, and one for its actual effect. If it had its effectiveness increased without having its color changed, I’d definitely suspect it was completely unintentional. A.net has repeatedly made changes to the game without properly informing the players, and having those changes go through. Remember the karma fiasco? What I’m trying to get at is that this may or may not be an intended change. Until it is sneakily reverted, or we get an apology about forgetting to mention they upgraded its functionality and are going to extend its sale, we can’t say if this was a bug or if it’s intentional.
I’d love to hear more about this to be honest. Pity there’s no statement yet. I mean, it makes sense that it now works at the same efficiency as a high-end Kit and all since the Permanent gathering tools also function at the highest quality of gathering tools. I’d still like to know a bit more though. Also a bit of a shame that unlike the permanent gathering tools this actually eats your money, not that I’ll be upset at losing a couple of silver after breaking down a few hundred items.

The tooltip states that it has a 20% chance to recover upgrades.
There is no way that before the Fractured! Patch i got a minor sigil/rune from every 5th blue/green.
Maybe it was a 5-10% chance to get a sigil.
So it could be that Anet realized that it was bugged for like 4 months and didnt give the advertised return on rare mats and upgrades, so decided to buff it for a while.
Would be a smart move to do that a couple of days before it would go on sale again.
