Gold to Gem conversion rate
While the cost for gems is getting really high, it’s still a better option than only have real money as a currency in the store so I don’t mind it
Hmmm well if I look at the items, I would have been happy and willingly spend a lot more money on gems if everything was halved, aka 5 euro for 800 gems. I know a LOT of people who would instantly start buying gems when that would happen.
Gee another exchange rate thread, must be a release/new item/sale on the TP day.
The exchange price is set by it’s internal supply of gold and gems (no gems aren’t created when you use the exchange) as the more we buy and we don’t restock by selling gems, the higher the rate will go until it reaches infinity. Fortunately some players will buy gems with cash and sell them to the exchange for big clunky bags of gold which lowers the rate so it should never reach infinity. Considering how volatile the rate has been, I would say we are closing on the point where selling gems for gold is attracting more participants.

Careful.. gold to gem threads are considered insulting to ArenaNet. Naughty naughty.
Don’t support the Gem Shop, it’s that easy.
No they aren’t.

It’s all about supply & demand, would you rather gold to gem rates be regulated where it’s one flat fee of every 100 gems is 10+ gold? Because that’s how I see Anet doing it if there were actual regulation. I’m happy with the way it is, exchange when gold to gems is low & sell when gems to gold is high I always say lol
I personally think 100 gems for 5 gold is a fine place, what do you guys think about that?
Also what do you guys think about the current conversion ratio?
Lots of thoughts have been posted about the exchange rate, how it works, and how folks feel about it. Here are a few sample threads:

I know the search feature of the forums can be finicky, so I just went to Duck Duck Go and searched with these terms (will work on Google too):

Pretty much sums it up :P

Selling 100 gems will get you 6g right now.
So yes, this is beginning to look more attractive.

I agree. All we can do is help them find the discussion that is already here. You never know, some might read through it and come up with a fresh perspective. I’m battling my cynical tendencies with small acts of optimism : )

You all must be joking me by finding it “attractive” that 100 gems gets you only 6g.
Have you not noticed the influx in gold sellers and how they are beginning to whisper people that utilize map chat more now? You happen to wonder why this is? Because the price for gems has become so ridiculous that people are spending their money on gold seller websites more than they are Gem Store. It’s getting to the point that gems aren’t going to truly be very affordable for people who want to use gold to gems anymore, 1gold gets you roughly 11gems, which for most things they decide to put in the store that people actually wanna spend gems on, the cost is 800 gems.
It’s becoming a problem because gold sellers are running crazy, and obviously they aren’t getting banned fast enough, but it’s only occurring because they are getting more customers. Not saying that I condone gold sellers or purchasing from them, I’d not do that as it takes the joy out of the game, but I can’t speak for 2 million+ other people.
6g per 100 gems is 4.8g per $1. Or 100g for $20.83. True it’s a 30-50% premium compared to gold sellers but you don’t have to worry about your account or identity stolen.

Think about a new player starting out. Say the game was given as a present or purchased during a sale. For10 euro that player can buy 800 gems and exchange for almost 50g!
When I started playing at game launch, 50g was a small fortune. It took me months of open world play to get that. Now a new player can get this right at the start.
Ah…the good old times when dawn was 40g…
Ah…the good old times when dawn was 40g…
That was only true during day 3 of game release. Gem prices during the same period was 800 gems for 1.6 gold (to sell).
A dawn costed 25*800 gems at sept 11 last year.
A dawn costs today 11*800 gems.
If you invested in gems rather than dawns from release, gems would have given you more than twice the return on investment.
I for one will just wait until dawn is <50$, and then accept the pay to win nature. That or try to fool myself that gear has no value in this game.

I got my refund from my 3 extra mining tools. I traded 2400 gems for about 147g today.
Those 3 only cost me about 35g at the time originally.
Still waiting for the exchange rate to hit 100 gems for 10 gold so I can sell my gems.
