Inflation and Achievement Chests
Yeah let’s fight the inflation by injecting even more gold into the economy to push the prices even higher. That’ll surely go well.

I chuckled… But yea, the gold is an incentive not really required.
I mean we used to farm AP for bragging rights, and no loot at all.

What inflation, specifically, are you referring to?
Shadowcat:
You are operating under the assumption that inflation so is overwhelming as to make 15 gold seem useless. John Smith, the games economist, has stated clearly on several occasions that there any inflation there is, is on a small scale and tightly controlled, and that inflation is not something they are concerned about, and monitor VERY closely.
The rise for prices is a simple supply and demand curve. Some items are much more desirable than others, so more people are willing to pay more for it. The TP prices are set by the players themselves. And while Anet sets the drop rate of such items, the players set the price.
So the 15g reward for an achievment chest, while it may seem chump change to you, is actually quite a lot for many others.
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
The gem reward covers that. Its actually more rewarding now than a year ago for that matter. But can’t help but think the game desperately needs a gold sink for the dedicated player base.
There been any recent overviews on the game economy? Would be interesting to see how things are these days.
There’s a difference between inflation and the rise of prices of specific items.
Good point on the TP prices being set by the players. And that the gems, if buying with in game gold, are worth a whole lot more now.
The game is suffering from item inflation, not gold inflation. Your gold seems less useful because of item inflation. At launch an item you wanted would take 5-10 T6 mats and 1-5 ectos. Now if a new item is introduced it takes 250 T6 mats, 2 stacks of ectos, and 100g in common mats. So even if gold hasn’t inflated your buying power of completed items has still plummeted even while your buying power of mats has stayed the same.

Well thats not even true.

So you are saying that exotic gear uses roughly the same amount of mats as ascended gear?
You are saying that standard exotic back pieces use the same amount of mats as maydrey?

just like you can’t compare exotics and legendaries, you also can’t compare exotics and ascended.
But I see your original point; it’s been a while since any new recipe uses low numbers of things. There are a few; Ambrite weapons, for example.
I made a post a little while ago about g/hour from achievement chests. If you sell/use everything profitable, it was 16s27c per hour. (17,000 AP in 3,500 hours).
If you were only looking at the gold, that’s 66 gold in 3,500 hours = 1s89c per hour.
You could literally run 1 dungeon path a week and that would add more gold to the game than you’d add from your achievement chests during that same time.

Foefire’s Essence isn’t remotely cheaper than crafting an amberite weapon. Immobolus isn’t exactly cheap.
End game mystic forge skins require end game amounts of mats. Compare apples to apples dude.
