So, a while back, I decided that I wanted to learn more about investing in the GW2 economy to see what is profitable and what isn’t. At the time the SAB was still open and I chose to buy the Super Scepter and Short Bow skins to save and resell later. The reason was that they would be unavailable after the SAB left and would probably not return when the SAB came back. At the time, I bought them for about 8g each. I saw the price jump to about 11g on the last day of SAB and the first day after it was gone, but since then it seems to have sat closer to 6g.

My question is: Should I have sold these items when they spiked at 11g or do you think it’s still wise to sit on them to wait for the price to come back up?

If you need the gold, cash out

If you can afford to hold, keep it.

What happened was all the newbie speculators thought they could make a quick buck after the patch and sell the skins 2 fold. Smart speculators know that it takes awhile for the value to go up and often the time with the lowest price is after the patch.

The one thing that concerns me is that we are most likely going to have new skins come out over the next few months which may dilute the # of in-demand skins for weapons. For example, for greatswords in October we didn’t have much choices. But after that, we have the greatsaw, the fused GS and the SAB GS. Thanks to datamining, we know there will be an eyeball GS.

So now the market for high-quality skins is getting diluted and the future value of older skins may end up stalling. Not to mention everyone wants to get rich and everyone probably has at least 1 SAB skin in their bank hoping to cash out.

I personally invested about 1000g in SAB skins but that value has now dropped to 600g. On average, lost about 30g for GS

Oh, I should also add, keep into consideration the current skin market for each weapon.

I know about the GS, shield, sceptre and staff market and there really aren’t many good skins for those except for the GS. Shield and staff especially are very underwhelming. This is why my portfolio largely consists of shield/staff and only 2 GS.

I don’t know much about short bow skins but for sceptre that is a good hold. There aren’t many impressive cheap sceptre skins out there. The best looking-non legendary sceptre is eye of rodgort and even that one is pretty expensive. The sceptre also has a pretty good market for guardians and elementalist since the skin suits their look well.

There are too many sab weapons now, so their price won´t rise in a lot of months. I think you could get more gold if you sell now your skin and buy one flame and frost dye.

If you want get one dye with gems you need 16g +1 g to pay tp, and there are still dyes for 7-8g.

Of course the price of dyes could drop like sab skins in some weeks, but I think that there are less dyes and if you buy now and sell soon, you only can win.

Also bare in mind that is possible in SAB world 2, the skins may return – in which case their value will drop like a rock

But as the devs have stated in previous posts most likely won’t!

Link? The most I ever saw was Josh stating that he assumed they would be but that he didn’t know for sure since he’s not in charge of rewards.

So, the ones who bought and sold quickly doubled their money, and you held on….losing money…..and yet you call them the newbies and somehow see your tactic as the better choice?

Yeah, that’s basically what I said, he’s not 100% sure because he’s not in charge of rewards.

Anyway, yeah, I have buyer’s remorse. I was feeling pretty good about myself during the last spike, but then prices crashed and now I’m back to not breaking even for possibly months. I didn’t invest anywhere near what Vol did, but enough that not having that money is a bit of a stress particularly if anything desirable & expensive pops up in the next few months.

I definitely should have sold last spike. I would have doubled my money and been happy.

This is a great lesson for all the newer traders out there though that you never ever should invest in 1 specific thing more than you’re willing to lose. Gotta diversify that portfolio!
